The Yangtze River Economic Zone (YREZ) is a major corridor of national science and innovation culture, an innovation-driven region that fosters new drivers of growth and leads transformation and development, and plays an important strategic support and exemplary leading role in the overall pattern of regional development. This paper analyzes the spatiotemporal differentiation characteristics of innovation output of 110 cities of YREZ from 2008 to 2018 by using Gini coefficient, coefficient of variation (CV), geographical weighted regression, and other methods. The factors affecting innovation output are selected from the perspective of innovation ecosystem. The results show the following. (1) Innovation output showed an increasing trend, and the high-value concentration cities in downstream areas gradually became prominent, the geographical concentration degree fluctuated and declined, and the distribution of innovation output gradually became balanced. (2) The global Moran’s I index of innovation output shows a fluctuation pattern of “M” shape and an overall upward trend. The analysis of local spatial correlation indicates that spatial distribution pattern of innovation output has not changed significantly. (3) There is obvious regional heterogeneity under different impacts of factors of innovation ecosystem on innovation output. Enterprises have the greatest impact, followed by financial resources and infrastructure environment.

For a long time, China's economic development ignore the constraints of resources and environmental costs but one-sided pursue GDP. In 2014, the State Council issued a document to develop the Yangtze River economic zone into a "green ecological corridor". The green development of the Yangtze River economic zone is of high-profile. This paper attempts to consider the resource and environmental factors into the economic growth, establish a reasonable evaluation of national and regional economic performance of the green economic efficiency indicators. It can be seen from the DEA estimates that the average green economic efficiency of the Yangtze River economic zone per year is more than 0.9. The Tobit panel model shows that there are differences in the factors affecting the green economic efficiency of different area. But overall, there is a "inverted U-type" relationship between green economic efficiency and per capita GDP, urbanization has a positive effect on green economic efficiency but not significant. Besides, foreign direct investment, structure factors, level of science and technology have a negative effect. According to the results of the inspection, this paper puts forward some policy suggestions on weighing the relationship between economic growth and environmental protection, taking a new road to industrialization and narrowing regional differences.

With the continuous acceleration of the modernization process, the Eco-environmental problems of the Yangtze River Economic Zone in China have become increasingly prominent, which makes the study of carbon emission efficiency become a long-term concern. Based on the panel data of 11 provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Zone in 2009~2016, this paper calculates the DEA-Malmquist index of the Total Factor Carbon Emission Efficiency containing undesirable output in various provinces and cities and three major regions. By studying the DEA-Malmquist index and its decomposition, the results show that the Total Factor Carbon Emission Efficiency of various regions in the Yangtze River Economic Zone presents a growth trend, and its main contribution comes from technological progress. In the future, the emission reduction rules of the Yangtze River Economic Zone will be transformed from the traditional top-down emission reduction model to the bottom-up “independent contribution” emission reduction model.

Purpose To observe the relations between three important factors resulting in estuarial Hypoxia phenomena of Yangtze River – wind, river flow, and stratification. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the possible reasons why hypoxia occurs in late spring and disappears in October. Design/methodology/approach To overcome the difficulty in examining the role of physical and biological factors affecting hypoxia based on measurement alone, finite-volume community ocean model (FVCOM) was introduced into the investigation. Observed freshwater flux data from Yangtze River, monthly averaged wind speed data, and other observed data were input into the model; the accuracy of which was validated with various kinds of data. The authors used the trajectories of Lagrangian particles from Yangtze River to study the regions of strong riverine influence under different wind forcing conditions and compared the simulation results with former observations. Findings Trade wind is a significant factor to influence the forming and receding of hypoxia across the Yangtze River. Originality/value Using FVCOM to investigate estuary hypoxia is more economical and effective.

Abstract Honghu Lake is the largest lake-type wetland in Hubei Province, China. It is also one of the largest shallow lakes in the Yangtze River Economic Zone, a key area in the relatively more developed southeast of China. However, the water quality has seen a deterioration tendency in recent decades, mostly owing to unreasonable human activities such as lake enclosure aquaculture following rapid social and economic development. Based on the water quality index (WQI) method, the water quality of Honghu Lake, by the vast amount of data collected from five observation sites monitored over ten years, was analyzed and evaluated. The results show that: (i) the water quality of Honghu Lake is in the ‘General’ grade as a whole with a WQI value of 43.41 ± 6.66; (ii) the water quality has been improving in the recent two years, reversing its decade-long deterioration; (iii) the water quality sampled at the Lantian site is the worst while that of the Guandun site is the best; (iv) the concentration of Pb and Cd are the key parameters to determine the water quality of Honghu Lake. Therefore, it can be concluded that more attention should be paid to investigate heavy metals in Honghu Lake in the future.

It is of great significance to research the spatial pattern of the urban system of the Yangtze River economic belt to analyze the characteristics and laws of the spatial structure of the Yangtze River economic belt and to promote the optimal development of the urban system of the Yangtze River economic zone. In this paper, the time data of the Yangtze River economic zone are corrected using Landsat satellite data and the clustering analysis method. The threshold of the urban built area is obtained by comparing the auxiliary data with other auxiliary data. Based on this threshold, a total of eight typical landscape pattern indicators—including the total area of the landscape, the total patch number, and the aggregation index—are used, and then FRAG-STATS 4.2 software is used to analyze the spatial pattern of urban development in the Yangtze River economic zone from 1992 to 2013. The results show the following: (1) During the period from 1992 to 2013, the urbanization of the Yangtze River economic zone expanded rapidly; the area of urban built-up area increased by a factor of 9.68, the number of patches increased by a factor of 2.39, and the patch density increased greatly, indicating that the Yangtze River economic zone, with an increasing number of towns and urban areas, continues to expand. (2) The complexity of the landscape patch shape gradually increased, the small and medium-sized cities continued to grow, more small towns emerged, and the total length of the border and the average density had average annual growth rates of 21.56% and 21.58%; the degree of aggregation and the mutual influence are increasing. (3) The maximum plaque index and the aggregation index show an overall declining trend. However, there are some fluctuations and disorder in the process of evolution, such as the total area of the landscape, the total patch number and the total patch density, which reflects that the Yangtze River economic zone is in the process of urbanization and has irregular and disordered characteristics.
