In the context of low-carbon development, effectively improving carbon emission efficiency is an inevitable requirement for achieving sustainable economic and social development. Based on panel data of 11 provinces and municipalities in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), ranging from 2000 to 2019, this paper uses green-technology efficiency to measure industrial carbon emission efficiency via stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) incorporated with carbon productivity. This provides a comprehensive analytical framework for assessing the carbon emission efficiency, quantitatively measuring the reduction potential, and clarifying the incentive channels. The results are as follows: (1) The industrial carbon emission efficiency (ICEE) of YRB presents an increasing trend. Although differences in emission efficiency among provinces and municipalities are narrowing, their emission efficiency is still prominently imbalanced. (2) The potential for reducing industrial carbon emissions in this region shows an upward-to-downward trend. The decline in such potential of each province and municipality in recent years indicates that further reduction is becoming more difficult. (3) Effective means to improve ICEE are to improve the level of industrialization, promote technological innovation in industrial low-carbonization, and raise industrial productivity. Meanwhile, the significant spatial spillover effect of ICEE further emphasizes the necessity of strengthening the coordination of carbon reduction policies in YRB. The research in this paper adds a new perspective to the evaluation of ICEE and also provides reference and technical support for the government to enhance ICEE and formulate green and sustainable development policies.

The energy transition and carbon emission efficiency are important thrust and target functions, respectively, for achieving carbon neutrality in the future. Using a sample of 30 Chinese provinces from 2006 to 2018, we measured their carbon efficiency using the game cross-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA). Then, a random forest regression model was used to explore the impact of renewable energy development on regional carbon emission efficiency. The results are as follows. First, China’s carbon emission efficiency in the southeast coastal area was better than that in the northwest area. Second, renewable energy development first inhibited and then promoted carbon emission efficiency, and there existed a reasonable range. Third, through a regional heterogeneity analysis, the trend of the influence of renewable energy development on carbon emission efficiency was found to not be significantly different in eastern, central, and western China, but there was a certain gap in the reasonable range. Our study not only helps to promote the study of renewable energy development and the carbon neutral target, but also provides an important reference for Chinese policy-makers to design a reasonable carbon emissions reduction path.

Among China’s five major industries, the logistics industry is the only one in which carbon emission intensity is continuing to increase, so it is of great importance in developing a low-carbon economy for China. Thus, some scholars have learned about carbon emission efficiency (CEE) in logistic industry recently; however, few of them have considered the inner structure, regional differentiation, or dynamic items of CEE. To fill this gap, we first calculate the dynamic carbon emission efficiency of China’s logistics industry (CEELI) (2001–2017) using the three-stage DEA-Malmquist model, and then using the Dagum Gini coefficient method, the Kernel Density Estimation (KDE), and the panel vector auto-regression (PVAR) model to analyze regional differential decomposition and their formation mechanism. The results indicate that the dynamic CEELI is ‘inefficient’ overall; it shows a decreasing trend, and the decline of dynamic efficiency mainly comes from technical backwardness rather than efficiency decline. Moreover, the domestic differences are gradually narrowing; the Gini inequality between regions and the density of trans-variation between regions are the main reasons for the gap between different regions and different periods.

Improving carbon emission efficiency is an important means to achieve pollution reduction and sustainable economic development. Rather than focusing on the implementation of market-incentive environmental policies in developed countries, we study the effect of the implementation of market-incentive environmental policies on the efficiency of carbon emissions in developing countries, which is generally ignored by frontiers researches. Based on panel data of 282 cities at prefecture-level and above in China from 2007 to 2017, we first adopt the non-radial distance function (NDDF) and global DEA model to measure the carbon emission efficiency of China’s cities. Then we take the Chinese carbon emission trading pilot as a quasi-natural experiment and explore the impact of carbon emission trading policy on carbon emission efficiency based on DID method. And the mechanisms are analyzed through the mediation effect model. It is found that the carbon emission rights trading policy can significantly improve the carbon emission efficiency of the pilot cities, and it mainly plays a role through three channels: technological progress effect, green innovation effect and energy consumption structure optimization effect. The heterogeneity test results show that for resource-based cities and cities with a higher degree of marketization, the carbon emission trading policy has a more obvious effect on improving carbon emission efficiency.
