AbstractPhymaturus punae is a viviparous lizard endemic to the Provincial Reserve San Guillermo, San Juan (Argentina). We present the first life history data of P. punae, belonging to an interesting genus adapted to cold climates. Females reach sexual maturity at 80.6 mm, and males at 84.4 mm snout-vent length. There is sexual dimorphism represented by larger and more robust males, but females show a wider body and a proportionally greater interlimb length than males. In males, spermatozoa become abundant in both testes and epididymi in mid-summer. Vitellogenic and pregnant females occurred simultaneously in late spring and mid-summer indicating a biennial reproductive cycle.

The Electric ray Discopyge tschudii is distributed in the Southwest Atlantic from southern Brazil to southern Argentina and in the Southeast Pacific from Peru to southern Chile. The main threat to this species is fishing. Discopyge tschudii is noncommercial and individuals caught are discarded on board. The present study analyzes the distribution and the morphological and reproductive characteristics of this ray in San Matías Gulf (SMG), Argentina. A total of 1087 individuals were analyzed. The species presented an aggregate distribution, with the main concentrations in the northern and eastern areas of SMG, at depths below 100 m. Males ranged from 9 to 43 cm and females from 11 to 38 cm. The species presented sexual dimorphism. Males were larger and heavier than females and also matured at larger sizes. Size at 50% of maturity was estimated at 30 cm for males and 21 cm for females. A total of 199 embryos were sampled and the proportion of sexes showed no significant differences from the expected 1:1. The number of embryos per female varied from 1 to 12. The most frequent values were 2 and 5. Length at birth was estimated at 82.17 ± 3.87 mm. Based on our findings, we hypothesize that the electric ray D. tschudii completes its reproductive cycle in SMG.

Aspects of the reproductive biology of one Tetragonopterinae was assessed in the Ubatiba river - Maricá / RJ. Length structure and mean size suggested sexual dimorphism, females reaching larger sizes than males. The onset of sexual maturity occured at 2.8cm for both the sexes. Fecundity, determined on ripe ovaries, showed positive correlation to females size and weight and varied from 595 to 5520 for 3.9cm and 6.2cm lengths respectively. The spawning type, defined as total, was determined by the oocyte diameter frequency from ovaries in different development stages. The frequency distribution of ovarian/testis maturation stages, associated with the temporal variation of the gonadosomatic index, suggested that the reproduction period was prolonged along the whole annual cycle.

AbstractThe reproductive cycle, sexual maturity, fecundity, and sexual dimorphism of Helicops infrataeniatus Jan, 1865, were inferred from the analysis of 374 preserved specimens (110 males, 140 females) from the eastern Central Depression of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. There was no statistical difference between the SVL of newborn males and females, but mature females attained greater length than mature males. The tail of mature individuals was proportionally longer in males than in females. Males matured at a smaller size than females. The reproductive cycle of this species was longer than what is known for oviparous colubrids from subtropical and temperate zones of Brazil. In the studied population, vitellogenesis occurred from September to February. Oviductal embryos were found from September to May. Births took place in September, January, February and March, and occurred in two peaks. Litter size ranged from 5 to 22 offspring. The differences between the number of vitellogenic follicles and embryos, and between embryos and newborns were not significant, thus practically all follicles were generally converted into embryos and embryos into newborns.

From October 2005 to March 2010, a total of 480 pelagic stingray, Pteroplatytrygon violacea, specimens, 188 females and 292 males (0.64 female : 1 male), were taken in the equatorial and south-western Atlantic by the commercial tuna longline fishery and their reproductive biology was studied. Disc widths (DW) ranged from 28.0 to 66.0 cm for females and from 34.0 to 59.6 cm for males. Size at first sexual maturity was estimated at ~48.0 cm DW (first pregnant female) for females and ~41.0 cm DW for males. Ovarian fecundity, considering only follicles larger than 0.5 cm in diameter, ranged from 1 to 17 follicles per female, while the uterine fecundity of embryos in pregnant females in Stages 2 and 3 ranged from 1 to 5 embryos per female. The sex ratio between the embryos was almost equal (1.08 female : 1 male) and the size at birth was 19.0 cm DW.

To study the reproductive biology of Moenkhausia intermedia (Eigenmann, 1908) in Itumbiara reservoir, Paranaíba river, Goiás, Brazil, a total of 301 specimens (237 females and 64 males) were captured quaterly from January to December 1993. The gonadosomatic index of females and males were related to morphologic variations of the gonads in different reproductive cycle stages (RCS). Analysis of RCS frequency and variations in the gonadosomatic index showed that M. intermedia reproduces during the whole year with fractional spawning. The smallest standard length at advanced maturity stage was estimated as 6.6 cm for females and 6.0 cm for males. The stomach repletion and coelomic fat indexes of both sexes reached peak values in the rest stage, suggesting that this species probably store energy in this phase and consume its fat reserve during reproduction. In the Itumbiara reservoir there was female predominance (4:1). Males were smaller than females, indicating sexual dimorphism in M. intermedia.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the reproductive biology of populations of Thamnodynastes hypoconia in subtemperate wetlands based on macroscopic analyses of their gonads. We analyzed 101 specimens from the southernmost regions of Brazil. The males had a greater snout-vent length, but the females reached sexual maturity with a greater body size. The reproductive cycle of the females was seasonal, with secondary vitellogenesis occurring between the winter and spring (May-October). Based on macroscopic analysis of gonads, data suggests that males have a continuous reproductive cycle. Parturition occurs between the late summer and early fall (January-April). The clutch size ranged between 4 and 16 embryos and showed no relationship with the female's body size. The recorded reproductive frequency of T. hypoconia is low (38 %) compared to other phylogenetically related species. Conversely, the studied populations appear to have a high reproductive success because it is an abundant species in the study site.

Abstract. Sauropod dinosaurs present exceptional challenges in understanding their biology because of their exceptional body size. One of these, life history, can be inferred from the histology of their bones. For this purpose, the diverse sauropod assemblage of the Upper Jurassic Tendaguru beds was sampled with a new coring method which provided unprecented access to and insights into sauropod bone histology. Growth series of humeri and femora as well as long growth records from single bones suggest that all four sauropod taxa are characterized by continued growth after sexual maturity but that growth was determinate. Fibrolamellär bone is dominant in the samples, indicating that the bones of the Tendaguru sauropods grew at rates comparable to those of modern large mammals. The growth pattern of these sauropods thus combines typically reptilian traits with typically mammalian traits. In the details of their bone histology, the Tendaguru sauropod taxa show considerable variation which reflects life history. In addition, Barosaurus exhibits probable sexual dimorphism in bone histology. Das Verständnis der Biologie der sauropoden Dinosaurier wird durch ihre enorme Körpergröße außerordentlich erschwert. Allerdings kann ein Aspekt, die Lebensgeschichte, anhand der Histologie ihrer Knochen untersucht werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurde die diverse Sauropoden-Vergesellschaftung der oberjurassischen Tendaguru-Schichten beprobt, und zwar mit einer neuartigen Kernbohrmethode, die einen herausragenden Zugang und Einblick in die Knochenhistologie der Sauropoden ermöglichte. Wachstumsserien von Humeri und Femora sowie umfassende Überlieferungen des Wachstums von Individuen anhand einzelner Knochen machen es wahrscheinlich, daß alle vier Sauropoden-Taxa der Tendaguru-Schichten durch ein auch nach der Geschlechtsreife anhaltendes Wachstum gekennzeichnet waren. Allerdings ging das Wachstum nicht bis zum Tode des Tieres weiter, sondern kam bei einer etwas variablen Maximalgröße zum Stillstand. Fibrolamellärer Knochen ist der vorherrschende Knochentyp in den Proben, was anzeigt, daß die Tendaguru-Sauropoden mit für Säugetieren typische Raten wuchsen. Die Tendaguru-Sauropoden kombinerten also ein für Reptilien typisches Muster des Wachstums, nämlich nach der Geschlechtsreife anhaltendes Wachstum, mit für Säuger typischen Raten des Wachstums. Die verschiedenen Sauropoden-Taxa zeigen erstaunliche Unterschiede in den Details ihrer Knochenhistologie, die Unterschiede in der Lebensgeschichte belegen. The ovaries of 31 franciscana dolphins (19 immature and 12 mature) by-caught in coastal waters of Argentina were examined to describe the reproductive biology. No ovarian polarity was found, both ovaries were functional and showed similar amounts of corpora. A positive trend was observed between the number of corpora and age (3–8 years old), indicating that ovulation scars are detectable for at least 4 years, and a ovulation rate of 0.39 was found for the sampled population. Age, length and weight at sexual maturity were estimated at 3.92 ± 0.09 years, 133.47 ± 11.11 cm and 32.68 ± 2.72 kg, respectively. The annual pregnancy rate was 0.36 ± 0.02 (95% CI = 0.10–0.65). The proportion of lactating and resting females found were 0.25 and 0.33 respectively. These outcomes constitute the first reproductive and life history information on franciscana dolphins from the southernmost population and are important in relation with adequate conservation management plans for this small cetacean.

Reproductive biology of the spiny lobster Panulirus japonicus was histologically examined by monthly sampling between March 1993 and September 1994 at Oshima Island, near Tokyo. P. japonicus had a well defined reproductive cycle. Yolk accumulation became manifest in February and ovaries grew rapidly in March. Females spawned from late April to mid August and were ovigerous to mid September. Of large females with a carapace length (CL) of ≥47 mm, 93% were estimated to spawn twice during the spawning season. Size at which 50% of females reached sexual maturity was estimated to be 41.8 mm CL, as calculated from a logistic model. Some individuals considered to be primiparous showed delayed vitellogenesis and were estimated to spawn only once during the season.
