A new species of the tree genus Syzygium (Myrtaceae), S. sahyadricum is described and illustrated from the Montane Shola forests of Anamalai and Palni Phytogeographical region of Western Ghats. Although phenotypically closely similar to S. spathulatum and S. malabaricum, the new species is easily recognizable by the pale yellow coloured tender leaves with horizontal secondary nerves and white flowers in reduced metabotryoid, pedunculate inflorescence, which are flattened towards the apex. Scanning the Syzygium collections in various herbaria revealed that similar specimens from various localities of this phyto-region are available and most of them with erroneous ascriptions. The report of S. spathulatum Thwaites, a Sri Lankan endemic species in India, was due to misinterpretation of Beddome’s collection. In this paper taxonomic peculiarities of the new species and allied taxa are discussed for better understanding.

A new species of Eugenia L. (Myrtcaeae), viz. E. kalamii, is described and illustrated from the Western Ghats of India. It is morphologically allied to E. mooniana Wight, (Indo-Sri Lankan species) and E. wynadensis Bedd., (endemic species of southern Western Ghats).

A new species of the gekkonid genus Cnemaspis is described based on a series of nine specimens from near Sankari in Salem district, Tamil Nadu state, southern India. The new species is diagnosable by the following suite of characters: a small-sized Cnemaspis (adult snout to vent length less than 33 mm); heterogeneous dorsal pholidosis consisting of weakly keeled granular scales intermixed with large strongly keeled, conical tubercles, 9–11 rows of dorsal tubercles, 12–17 tubercles in paravertebral rows; spine-like scales absent on flank, 17–20 lamellae under digit IV of pes. Males with 4–6 femoral pores on each thigh, separated on either side by eight poreless scales from four precloacal pores; precloacal pores separated medially by a single poreless scale; two single dorsal ocelli on occiput and between forelimb insertions, two pairs of ocelli on either side just anterior and posterior to forelimb insertions. Cnemaspis agarwali sp. nov. is the fifth endemic species of Cnemaspis from peninsular India outside the Western Ghats and highlights the rich and unique diversity of this understudied region.

Syzygium anamalaianum, a new species from Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India is described. This species is closely allied to Syzygium bharathii and S.caryophyllatum, but differs from it by having thick elliptic or ovate–lanceolate leaves with deeply grooved midrib, 4–angled prominently winged peduncle, smaller flower, funnel or pyriform hypanthium, inwardly curved stamens of varying lengths and obovate or subglobular seeds. This combination of characters makes determining the relationships of Syzygium anamalaianum difficult.

A new species of Lagenandra (Araceae), is described and illustrated from Walauwewaththa Wathurana freshwater swamp forest, Bulathsinghala, Sri Lanka. Here we describe the new species as Lagenandra wayambae Madola, K. Yakandawala, D. Yakandawala and Karunaratne and provide a detailed description, drawing and colour photographs. We compare the morphology of L. wayambae with that of similar members of Lagenandra and conduct an assessment of its conservation status. A taxonomic key to the Sri Lankan Lagenandra is presented for easy identification. Recognizing a new endemic member enhances the number of Sri Lankan species to nine. According to the IUCN red data category guidelines L. wayambae qualifies for Critically Endangered category under Criterion B1ab (ii,iii,v) + B2ab (ii,iii,v).

Linaria subbaetica, a new species from the south of the Iberian Peninsula, is here described, illustrated, and compared with its morphologically closest relatives from L. sect. Supinae: L. badalii, L. caesia, and L. supina. The species is characterised by being annual, and having usually revolute leaves, a short and corymbiform inflorescence at anthesis with a pilose-glandulose axis, a white to pale-yellow corolla (yellow to orangish palate), bearing a spur equalling to slightly longer that the rest of the corolla, and black seeds with a tuberculate and papillose disc surface and a thickened wing. L. subbaetica is an endemic species, growing on calcareous mountains, in the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, Córdoba province (Andalusia, Spain).

Ischaemum agharkarii, a new species of Poaceae from the Northern Western Ghats of India is described and illustrated here. It is closely similar to two Indian endemic species, I. travancorense and I. santapaui but differs in having hairy first node, presence of side nodules on lower glume of both sessile and pedicelled spikelets, band of hairs on ventral side of lower glume and other morphological features. We provide detailed morphological description, distribution map and photographs of the new species.

Wight’s specimen from Peninsular India which Bentham considered as Leucas chinensis is different from Retzius specimen from China. A lectotype for this name is selected from specimens collected by Bladh for Retzius in China. In contrast, Wight’s specimen represents a new species endemic to southern Western Ghats, having long branches, broadly ovate leaves, funnel shaped calyx with a wide mouth and stellately spreading, broadly triangular teeth and the corolla 16–17 mm long. The new species is named Leucas sahyadriensis. Detailed description, illustration, photographs, distribution maps and a table showing its differences from allied species are provided.

Beaucarnea olsonii is described and illustrated from tropical deciduous forests of SW Puebla, Mexico. The new species can be distinguished from other Beaucarnea species by its massively swollen base that abruptly tapers into slender branches, by its conspicuously long stigma, and by its pedicel articulation that occurs at 2/3 of the length of the pedicel below the flower. With this new addition, the total number of endemic species of Beaucarnea for Mexico increases to 10, making this country the greatest center of diversification and endemism for the genus. We also provide a distribution map and a conservation status recommendation for the new species, as well as a key to the Beaucarnea species of southern central Mexico.
