Aster brevicaulis W. P. Li (Asteraceae, Astereae), a new species from Sichuan, China, is illustrated and described. Morphological data and a phylogenetic analysis based on a combined nuclear DNA ITS and ETS dataset suggest that A. brevicaulis is a separate species closely related to A. tongolensis. The new species differs from the latter by having stems only 2–15 (22) cm long, without stolons, phyllaries 5-seriate, and pappus 4–5 mm long. Cytological observation shows that the new species is diploid with 2n = 2x = 18 =16m + 2sm.

Aster oliganthus (Asteraceae, Astereae), a new species from two populations of the eastern Mt. Hengduanshan region in western Sichuan, China, is illustrated and described. The new species is similar to A. ageratoides in habit, triplinerved leaves, lower and basal leaves withering at anthesis, terminal paniculate-corymbiform to corymbiform synflorescences, and 3–5-seriate phyllaries, but differs from it by falcate leaves with long acuminate to caudate apex, 5–7(–9) ray florets, and (2–)4–5 disc florets. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of internal and external transcribed spacers of nrDNA, we demonstrated that the two populations form a highly supported clade, are closely related to but not nested within the A. ageratoides clade, which supports that A. oliganthus is a good species and belongs to A. subgen. Aster sect. Ageratoides. Cytological observation shows that the new species is diploid with its karyotype being 2n =2x =18 = 16m + 2sm.

Codonopsis atriplicifolia (Campanulaceae) from western Sichuan, China, is described here as a new species, which is similar to C. subscaposa in a number of characters. The results of molecular phylogenetic analysis of 25 species of Codonopsis based on chloroplast DNA fragments (matK, petD with petB-petD, rbcL) show that C. atriplicifolia is closely related to C. farreri. In morphology, the new species is distinctly different from the allied species by its linear-lanceolate leaves with subentire to pinnatipartite margins.

This report provides a description of Primula sunhangii from the Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Province in Central China, which is categorized as a new species of the primrose family. Primula sunhangii is morphologically similar to P. involucrata Wall. ex Duby in terms of its simple umbel, efarinose, and prolonged bracts. However, P. sunhangii is distinguished by its glabrous sepal, short petiole (compare with blade) and cylindrical calyx and capsule. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear and cpDNA genes demonstrates that P. sunhangii and P. involucrata are closely related. Combining genetic and morphological data, the recognition of P. sunhangii as a unique new species is supported.

Allium xinlongense from western Sichuan Province, China, is described as a new species. Its diagnostic morphological characters were confirmed to be valid by comparing them to those of related species, such as A. maowenense, A. chrysanthum, A. rude, A. xichuanense, A. chrysocephalum, and A. herderianum. Molecular phylogenetic analysis (combining ITS and rpL32-trnL markers) indicated that this new species is a member of Allium sect. Daghestanica. A comprehensive description of this new species is provided, including habitat environment and detailed morphological traits.

Peponium elgonense, a new species of Cucurbitaceae from Mount Elgon in Kenya, is described and illustrated here with photographs. This species is similar to P. cienkowskii and P. vogelii, but differs by being monoecious and having a longer ovary. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of Peponium based on ITS and five plastid markers (trnL–F, rpl20–rps12, matK, rbcL, and trnL intron) of four species of Peponium further shows that P. elgonense individuals cluster together supporting the argument to regard it as a separate species.

Here we describe Oxytropis shennongjiaensis, a new species of Fabaceae from Central China (Hubei Province). Morphologically, O. shennongjiaensis is closely similar to O. sitaipaiensis, O. melanocalyx and O. kansuensis, but differs in stem characters, with less conspicuous internodes; persistent herbaceous stipules; pale yellow to white corolla; and stipitate legumes, 3–5 mm with a long beak. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and two chloroplast markers (trnL–F and psbA–trnH), also identified O. shennongjiaensis as a new species, which is consistent with our morphological analyses. Considering the morphological data and phylogenetic data presented here, we believe that this evidence satisfies the required diagnostic criteria to identify O. shennongjiaensis as a new species.

Ottelia guanyangensis (Hydrocharitaceae), a new species from southwestern China, is described and illustrated. This aquatic plant is a perennial, submersed herb with bisexual flowers and a hexagonal-cylindric fruit. It is related to O. acuminata var. songmingensis and O. balansae but differs from these two taxa by its bisexual flowers, spathe with 2–5 flowers, trinerved leaf with obvious cross veins, and a winged, hexagonal-cylindric fruit. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and three chloroplast DNA sequences (rbcL, trnK5’ intron and trnS-trnG) resolves O. guanyangensis as a distinct clade, which further justifies its recognition as a new species.

Woodland salamanders of the genus Plethodon are characterized by strong ecological and morphological conservatism. One assemblage, the Wehrle’s salamander (Plethodon wehrlei Fowler & Dunn) species group, is distributed from New York to Tennessee, USA, and includes several morphological variants, four of which are sufficiently distinct to have been recognized as species in the past. For many years after two of these species were placed in synonymy, only P. wehrlei and P. punctatus Highton were recognized. A recent phylogeographic study using mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA uncovered considerable genetic diversity within the group and conservatively resurrected one of the previously synonymized forms (P. dixi Pope & Fowler). However, their analysis could not resolve all relationships among remaining populations of P. wehrlei, leaving the taxon paraphyletic. We re-evaluated the evolutionary history of this group using genomic data, recovered strong support for at least five distinct clades, and corroborated previously reported relationships. We also collected morphological data and demonstrated morphological distinctiveness for four of the five clades that we herein recognize as species. We resurrect the synonymized name P. jacksoni Newman to represent the southern clades of P. wehrlei in southwestern Virginia and North Carolina exclusive of P. dixi. In addition, we describe a yellow-spotted form of P. wehrlei endemic to the Cumberland Plateau as a new species. Although our proposed changes rectify the paraphyly of P. wehrlei, our sampling was not sufficient to resolve potential taxonomic issues remaining within the species herein recognized as P. jacksoni.

A new species belonging to Lactarius subg. Plinthogalus was discovered during a long-term project on the diversity of Korean Lactarius. This species is proposed here as Lactarius cucurbitoides. The status of L. cucurbitoides as a new species is supported by molecular data and morphological features. Phylogenetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences shows that L. cucurbitoides is closely related to L. subplinthogalus, L. friabilis, and L. oomsisiensis, with pairwise distances of 2.8–4.3%. Morphological characters of L. cucurbitoides that distinguish it from these closely related species are a pale yellow to pale orange colored pileus and non-discoloration of white latex. The new species is described and illustrated in the present paper.

In this paper we initiate a taxonomic review of the genus Serina Gredler, endemic to the eastern slope of the Qinghai- Xizang Plateau, namely S Gansu, SW Sichuan, SE Xizang Autonomous Region and N Yunnan of China. We describe the genital anatomy for some species and the shell morphology for all known species: Serina belae (Hilber), S. cathaica Gredler, S. egressa Sturany, S. prostoma (Ancey), S. ser Gredler, S. subser Gredler, S. soluta (Möllendorff) and S. vincentii (Gredler). Based on the re-evaluation of both shell and genitalian differentiations we prefer to classify the taxon egressa as a separate species rather than a subspecies of S. ser. In our study we come to the conclusion that S. soluta inflata Yen and S. soluta stenochila (Möllendorff) should be regarded as synonyms of S. soluta due to the insufficient differentiation among them. Buliminus (Holcauchen) tubios Annandale, Bulimus prostoma leucochila Ancey and Serina deqenensis Chen, Zhou and Luo were conspecific with Serina prostoma and that Serina sobrina (Preston) was conspecific with Clausiliopsis szechenyi (Böttger). We propose a new species Serina denticulata n. sp. from the Southern Gansu Plateau. Furthermore we discuss the phylogenetic relationship among the genera Serina, Clausiliopsis Möllendorff, Pupopsis Gredler, and Pupinidius Möllendorff based on the morphological data from twelve relevant species.
