Spegazzinia camelliae sp. nov. (Didymosphaeriaceae, Pleosprales), a new endophytic fungus from northern Thailand

A new endophytic ascomycete, described herein as Spegazzinia camelliae, was isolated from leaves of Camellia sinensis var. assamica collected from Nan Province, Thailand. This species is characterized by basauxic conidiophores and dark brown to blackish brown α and β conidia. It can be distinguished from previously described Spegazzinia species by the spine length of the α conidia and the size of the β conidia. Multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of the small subunit (SSU), large subunit (LSU) and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1) genes also support S. camelliae is a distinct new species within Spegazzinia. A full description, color photographs, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree showing the position of S. camelliae are provided.

A new endophytic fungus, described herein as Cunninghamella saisamornae, was isolated from soil collected from Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. This species was distinguished from the previously described Cunninghamella species by the presence of a chlamydospore formation, the lack of a zygospore stage and a maximum growth temperature of 45°C. Multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), along with the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef-1) genes, support the finding that C. saisamornae is distinct from other species within the genus Cunninghamella. A full description, color photographs, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree showing the position of C. saisamornae are provided.

Abstract A novel species of Morosphaeria, Morosphaeria muthupetensis, saprobic on intertidal mangrove wood of Rhizophora mucronata from Muthupet mangroves on Kaveri River Delta, Tamil Nadu along the East coast of India, is described in this paper. Morosphaeria muthupetensis is characterized by large sub-globose to lenticular ascomata; long cylindrical to clavate, short pedicellate asci; small, fusiform to ellipsoidal ascospores with acute ends when compared to other Morosphaeria species. A multigene phylogeny obtained from a combined nuclear large subunit, small subunit, internal transcribed spacers rDNA and translation elongation factor 1-alpha sequence analysis revealed that M. muthupetensis is phylogenetically distinct and nested in between Morosphaeria velatispora and Morosphaeria ramunculicola and all these species constitute a strongly supported monophyletic clade sister to the genus Helicascus. Detailed descriptions and illustrations of M. muthupetensis are presented and compared with other Morosphaeria species.

A new saprophytic fungus, Pleurotus sirindhorniae, is described based on collections from northern Thailand. This species is characterized by greyish yellow to olive brown pileus, ellipsoid to elongate basidiospores and clavate to mucronate cheilocystidia. It is distinguished from the previously described Pleuotus species by its distinct morphological characteristics. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the large subunit (LSU) and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1) and the RNA polymerase II largest subunit (rpb1) genes also support P. sirindhorniae as a distinct new species within the genus Pleurotus. A full description, color photographs, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree to show the position of P. sirindhorniae are provided.

The genus Conidiobolus is an important group in entomophthoroid fungi and is considered to be polyphyletic in recent molecular phylogenies. To re-evaluate and delimit this genus, multi-locus phylogenetic analyses were performed using the large and small subunits of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nucLSU and nucSSU), the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosomal DNA (mtSSU) and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α). The results indicated that the Conidiobolus is not monophyletic, being grouped into a paraphyletic grade with four clades. Consequently, the well-known Conidiobolus is revised and three new genera Capillidium, Microconidiobolus and Neoconidiobolus are proposed along with one new record and 22 new combinations. In addition, the genus Basidiobolus is found to be basal to the other entomophthoroid taxa and the genus Batkoa locates in the Entomophthoraceae clade.

A survey of bambusicolous fungi in Bijiashan Mountain Park, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, revealed several Arthrinium-like taxa from dead sheaths, twigs, and clumps of Bambusa species. Phylogenetic relationships were investigated based on morphology and combined analyses of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), large subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA (LSU), beta tubulin (β-tubulin), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef 1-α) gene sequences. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic data, Arthrinium acutiapicum sp. nov. and Arthrinium pseudorasikravindrae sp. nov. are introduced herein with descriptions and illustrations. Additionally, two new locality records of Arthrinium bambusae and Arthrinium guizhouense are described and illustrated.

During a survey of endophytic fungi in aquatic plants collected from Tibet, PR China, a novel species, Ramichloridium endophyticum, was isolated from Potamogeton pectinatus. This novel species differs from other species of the genus Ramichloridium by its finely verrucose, obovoid, ellipsoidal–obovoid and occasionally subglobose conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of the combined sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (tef1-α) confirmed that the isolated strain represents a member of the genus Ramichloridium. A full description, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree showing the position of R. endophyticum are provided.

Abstract Absidia is ubiquitous and plays an important role in medicine and biotechnology. In the present study, nine new species were described from China in the genus Absidia, i.e. A. ampullacea, A. brunnea, A. chinensis, A. cinerea, A. digitata, A. oblongispora, A. sympodialis, A. varians, and A. virescens. Besides, two varieties A. cylindrospora var. nigra and A. spinosa var. biappendiculata were elevated to a specific rank as A. nigra comb. nov. and A. biappendiculata comb. nov., respectively. These new taxa were proposed based on a comprehensive investigation of morphological traits (such as shape and size of sporangia, sporangiospores and projections on columellae), physiological feature (maximum growth temperatures), and multi-locus sequences (including internal transcribed spacer, large subunit D1-D2 domains of nuclear ribosomal DNA, partial translation elongation factor 1 alpha gene and actin gene). All species mentioned above are illustrated, and an identification key to all the known species of Absidia in China is included.

A new species of endophytic fungi, described herein as Spissiomyces endophytica, was isolated from tubers of Balanophora fungosa in Lampang Province, Thailand. A morphological investigation revealed that this species was distinguished from the previously described Spissiomyces species by its lager conidial size. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using combined sequence datasets of the small subunit (SSU), large subunit (LSU) and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), a part of the RNA polymerase (RPB2) and β-tubulin (TUB) genes, in order to support the morphological results. A full description, illustrations, phylogenetic tree and key to the species are provided.

In this paper we describe a new species of cave fungus belonging to Sporocadaceae (Amphisphaeriales), collected from Gem Cave, Fumin County, Yunnan Province, China. Initial morphological observations confirmed that our fungal collection is a pestalotioid species. Phylogenetic analyses of combined internal transcribed spacer (ITS), β-tubulin (TUB) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1α) gene sequence dataset confirmed that our fungus forms an independent branch within Neopestalotiopsis. Thus, we describe our fungus as a new species of Neopestalotiopsis based on both morphology and multigene phylogeny. This is the first-ever report of Neopestalotiopsis from a cave habitat. A full description, micrographs and a phylogenetic tree showing the placement of the new species are provided.

A new species of agaricomycetes, Clitopilus lampangensis, is described based on collections from northern Thailand. This species was distinguished from previously described Clitopilus species by its pale yellow to grayish yellow pileus with the presence of wider caulocystidia. Molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on the data of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA, and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rbp2) genes, also support the finding that C. lampangensis is distinct from other species within the genus Clitopilus. A full description, color photographs, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree showing the position of C. lampangensis are provided.
