Eryngium (Apiaceae, Saniculoideae) in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil

Eryngium has about 220 species, mostly distributed in subtropical and temperate regions of all continents. With about 60 species, the genus is widely distributed in Brazil, being present in all states of the country. Its species are perennial or biennial plants that preferentially colonize terrestrial, aquatic and rocky substrates. They usually have an erect or creeping habit, with rosulate leaves and white, blue or purple flowers. Within Apiaceae, the genus can be easily distinguished from the other genera by its capitulate inflorescences and by having a single bract per flower. We present the first taxonomic treatment for the genus in the state of Paraná, which is based on herbarium collections and fieldwork across the state. In total, 25 species were recorded. Of these, seven are endemic to Brazil. Eryngium aloifolium and E. regnelli are new records for Paraná. Fifteen species grow in native grasslands at high elevations, whereas one species is restricted to remnants of savannas in the northern portion of the state (E. rochei). Identification key, descriptions, illustrations, distributions maps, and taxonomic comments are provided.

In the present study we report new records of the anurans Hypsiboas curupi, Scinax littoralis, Dendropsophus elegans, and Crossodactylus schmidti for the state of Santa Catarina. These records expand the geographic distribution currently known for these species and contribute for the knowledge of the southern Brazilian anuran fauna.

Three new species of the nursery-web spider genus Architis Simon, 1898 are described and illustrated; all collected during spider biodiversity inventories in the Brazilian Amazonia. Architis gracilis Santos sp. nov. is based on a male and A. catuaba Santos sp. nov. on a female specimen, both from the state of Acre, western Brazilian Amazonia. Architis neblina Santos & Nogueira sp. nov. is described from eight females from the Pico da Neblina National Park, state of Amazonas. New records from Brazil are listed for Architis brasiliensis (Mello-Leitão, 1940), A. helveola (Simon, 1898), A. maturaca Santos, 2007 and A. tenuipes (Simon, 1898). The presence of cuspule-like spines on male coxae I, once known only for Architis tenuis Simon, 1898 and A. cymatilis Simon, 1898, are reported for A. maturaca. A remarkable dimorphism in the epigynum of Architis capricorna Carico, 1981 is described based on specimens from southern Brazil. An updated identification key for species of Architis is provided.

Chamaecrista is one of the largest genera of Leguminosae subfamily Caesalpinioideae and comprises 330 species, of these, 222 species are present in the Phytogeographic Cerrado Domain in Brazil. The taxonomy of the genus in Brazil continues to need study. Here we present a taxonomic synopsis of Chamaecrista for the Chapada dos Veadeiros (CV) region, which is located in the northern portion of the state of Goiás, Brazil. Fieldwork was carried out in the area between 2010 and 2018; we also reviewed the literature and about 1500 herbarium collections to build the synopsis of species presented here. We record 65 species (71 taxa) of Chamaecrista occurring in the CV, corresponding to 60% of the species registered for the state of Goiás; 49 species at Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (CVNP), 27 and 19 are endemic to the state of Goiás and the studied area respectively. An identification key and distribution maps, as well as comments on morphology and conservation status are presented, together with photograhs of the species in the field.

Abstract Senna comprises about 350 species worldwide, of which 80 species occur in Brazil. This work brings an update taxonomic treatment of Senna species in the state of Minas Gerais, the second most diverse state for the genus, through the morphological analysis of about 2,348 specimens from herbaria and fieldwork. Thirty-six species and 29 varieties were recognized, including 34 native species and 2 cultivated species. Of the 39 species reported in literature for the state, but 4 species were excluded from the list produced. The occurrence of Senna acuruensis was confirmed; S. macranthera var. striata and S. pilifera var. tubata are new records, and S. hirsuta var. acuminata is endemic to Minas Gerais. There are 28 species in the Cerrado, 26 species in the Atlantic Forest and 20 species in the Caatinga. The distribution of Senna pentagonia var. pentagonia is extended to include the Atlantic Forest. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic comments and geographic distribution are provided for the species and varities.

Rio Grande do Sul (RS) is the southernmost state in Brazil and includes areas within the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. The semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha) from RS are poorly known, with only 14 previously recorded species. We carried out two expeditions in this state, in 2002 and 2019, across 19 municipalities. Here, we provide new records for 19 species, of which 13 are recorded for the first time from the state, five have their distributions expanded, and one is recorded again from a same locality previously reported in the literature. Furthermore, 13 species were collected for the first time in the Pampa biome and one in the Atlantic Forest.

There is a lack of knowledge regarding Lepidoptera species in altitudinal grassland areas, especially in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Here we report some records of Vanessa braziliensis (Moore, 1883) and Urbanus zagorus (Plötz, 1880) in high altitude areas. We have likely registered both the first record of U. zagorus for the state of Santa Catarina and the highest altitudinal record of V. braziliensis in Brazil.

We report on the first records of Sabethini mosquitoes in the state of Paraná, based on specimens collected in forested environments between 2004 and 2005. In total, 12 species were identified, including 7 species of Wyeomyia Theobald, 1901 and 5 species of Sabethes Robineau-Desvoidy, 1827. Among them, 6 are new records for the southern region of the country, and 6 are new records for the state of Paraná. These results indicate the occurrence of relict species of mosquitoes in Paraná, as they were collected from portions of forests that preserve original characteristics.​​​

A new total of nine continental gastropod forms are incorporated to the previous systematic malacological inventory of Santa Catarina's State/SC, central southern Brazil region, the species Helicina schereri Baker, 1913, Assiminea sp, Lamellaxis clavulinus (Potiez and Michaud, 1838), Lamellaxis (Leptopeas) cf. mizius Marcus & Marcus, 1968, Plekocheilus (Eurytus) sp, Rhinus cf. longisetus (Moricand, 1846), Simpulopsis cf. ovata Sowerby, 1822, Megalobulimus klappenbachi Leme, 1964, and Zilchogyra cleliae Weyrauch, 1965. Included in eight genera and seven families, raise the state record for 220 species and subspecies regionally known (190 gastropods - 148 terrestrial, 2 amphibian and 40 limnic/freshwater –, and 30 freshwater bivalves).

Abstract This study shows a taxonomic treatment for all species of Bignonieae from the state of Pernambuco (Brazil). Through extensive herbarium and field work, we documented 42 species and 13 genera for Pernambuco, of which six species represent new records for the state (i.e., Adenocalymma coriaceum, Anemopaegma gracile, Anemopaegma velutinum, Bignonia sciuripabulum, Callichlamys latifolia and Fridericia cuneifolia). In addition, Anemopaegma citrinum was documented for the first time in the Atlantic Forest domain. We provide identification keys for genera and species, taxonomic descriptions, data on geographic distribution, habitat, phenology, and illustrations for all species.

Miconia is the largest genus of Melastomataceae in Brazil with more than 280 species, of which 120 are found in the Atlantic Rainforest. We present here a taxonomic treatment for the species of Miconia that occur in Espírito Santo, with morphological descriptions, geographic distribution, comments, photos and an identification key. We found 55 species, from which six were recently described (five endemic, M. capixaba, M. kollmannii, M. michelangeliana, M. ruschiana and M. valentinensis, and one with wider distribution, M. atlantica) and six are new records for the state (Miconia molesta, M. petroniana, M. staminea, M. stenostachya, M. valtheri and M. willdenowii). One species is presented here as a new species that will be described soon by other authors.
