Molecular and morphological evidence for two new species of terrestrial planarians of the genus Microplana (Platyhelminthes; Turbellaria; Tricladida; Terricola) from Europe

Three species of terrestrial planarian were found in a garden in Yorkshire, Microplana scharffi (Graff 1896), M. terrestris (Müller 1774) and a third Microplana species similar in size and shape to M. terrestris but brown (khaki) rather than grey/black. Mitochondrial cytochome oxidase I sequences show that the three are distinct species, but that the sequences of the khaki specimens are identical with a GenBank sequence under the name “Microplana terrestris”. Photomicrographs of the copulatory apparatus of several specimens of each species, including type material, are presented which confirm that the three species are distinct and show the variation within each species. The khaki species is named as Microplana kwiskea n. sp. Specimens from Spain relating to the GenBank “Microplana terrestris” sequence have been examined and are not of that species, nor are they M. kwiskea. They are considered to be a further species, M. groga n. sp.

Abstract—Two new species of Turnera (Passifloraceae s. l., Turneroideae), T. acangatinga and T. ibateguara, from the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil, are described. Some specimens of T. acangatinga were originally treated as T. annularis. Turnera ibateguara was recently considered part of T. pernambucensis, a species which also occurs in the Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil, and which was, until then, only known from the type material. In this study, recent collections of T. pernambucensis in the state of Alagoas revealed that both are distinct species and that have been mistakenly identified so far. We provide data on morphology, distribution, habitat, and phenophases, a preliminary conservation status assessment for the three species, and a key to the species with capitate inflorescences from Alagoas and Pernambuco.

Unclear boundaries between species hinder identification in the field and in herbaria, especially in species groups that can only be distinguished on the basis of subtle morphological and ecological features. One such taxon is Ficinia indica, widespread in the Greater Cape Floristic Region, growing on deep sandy soils between sea level and 1000 m elevation. Within its range, several phylogenetically related and morphologically similar species co-occur or occupy distinct habitats. Studies in herbaria show species in the Ficinia indica complex to be largely misidentified based on the use of qualitative information. Here, we investigate whether the six taxa recognized, based on one or a few characters, are supported as distinct species based on multivariate analysis of macro-morphological data. Two of the taxa were mostly separated whereas the other four taxa overlapped in multivariate space, but all the taxa could be distinguished using a single or a combination of morphological and ecological characters. We uphold the four previously recognized taxa (Ficinia argyropus, F. elatior, F. indica, F. laevis) as species, describe two new species (F. arnoldii and F. montana), and provide a dichotomous key for their identification.

The genus Cicadulina was established in 1926 (Bull. Ent. Res. 17, p. 43) to hold a new species, C. zeae, China, injurious to maize in Kenya Colony. Later (Bull. Ent. Res., 19, 1928, p. 66) it was shown that Balclutha mbila, Naude, recorded as transmitting the virus of streak disease of maize in Natal, also belonged to this genus, and two new species C. arachidis and C. similis were described from the Gambia, where they were reported as injurious to ground-nut and suspected of transmitting the virus of the rosette disease of that plant. Since that time Dr. H. H. Storey of the Amani Research Station has been investigating the possibility of transmission of the streak virus of maize by C. zeae. In attempting to breed strains capable of transmission of the disease certain crosses were made which showed conclusively that he was dealing with two distinct species. These species he was able to separate on the colour pattern of the abdomen. Dr. Storey has now sent to me material of both these species and a study of the genitalia corroborates his finding. One, of course, proved to be C. zeae, the other is new and I therefore propose to dedicate it to the discoverer.

Hoplias lacerdae was originally described from the rio Ribeira de Iguape, Iporanga, São Paulo State. The Hoplias lacerdae group is defined as containing generally large trahiras with the medial margins of dentaries running parallel to each other and lacking teeth on the basihyal compared to the H. malabaricus group in which the medial margins of the dentaries converge towards the mandibular symphysis and which have teeth on the basihyal. A taxonomic revision of the group based on meristic and morphometric data identified five distinct species: H. lacerdae distributed in the rio Ribeira de Iguape and rio Uruguai; H. intermedius from the rio São Francisco, upper rio Paraná basin, and rio Doce; H. brasiliensis from rivers of the Atlantic Coastal drainage from the rio Paraguaçu to the rio Jequitinhonha; H. australis new species, endemic to the rio Uruguai; and H. curupira new species present in northern South America, including the rios Negro, Trombetas, Tapajós, Xingu, Tocantins and Capim in the Amazon basin, upper rio Orinoco near the rio Casiquiare (Venezuela), and coastal rivers of Guyana and Suriname. A lectotype for Hoplias intermedius and a neotype for H. brasiliensis are designated.

The harvestman genus Bonea Roewer, 1914 and its type species B. sarasinorum Roewer, 1914 are redescribed based on the type material. In addition, two new species of Bonea from Hainan Island, China, are described and illustrated: B. zhui sp. nov. and B. tridigitata sp. nov. A new species of Lomanius Roewer, 1923 from Yunnan Province, China, is also described and illustrated: L. bulbosus sp. nov.. Keys to the 10 species of Bonea and the six species of Lomanius are provided. Paralomanius Goodnight & Goodnight, 1948 is revalidated from the synonymy of Lomanius, carrying as junior synonym Eulomanius Roewer, 1949, and containing two species from Micronesia (Paralomanius longipalpus Goodnight & Goodnight, 1948) and Philippines (Paralomanius mindanaoensis (Suzuki, 1977) new status). Bonea is transferred from the Ibaloniinae to Podoctinae. These are the first records of named species of Podoctidae from China.

The dung beetle genus Parachorius Harold, 1873 (= Cassolus Sharp, 1875) belongs to the monotypic tribe Parachoriini Tarasov, 2017 and includes 19 species from the Oriental and southeastern Palaearctic Regions (Tarasov 2017). Two recent studies (Ochi et al. 2017a, b) described two new species of this genus from Laos and Sumatra. The investigation of detailed descriptions and illustrations from those studies and their assessment in the light of the recent revision of Parachorius (Tarasov 2017) revealed that those new species are synonyms of earlier described ones: P. javanus (Boucomont, 1914) = P. singgalangensis Ochi, Kon & Hartini, 2017, new synonymy, and P. fukiensis (Balthasar, 1960) = C. laosensis Ochi, Kon & Higurashi, 2017, new synonymy. Unfortunately, this oversight happened because the authors of those new species did not check the type material of already described taxa.

A molecular phylogeny of the western Palearctic weevil genus Kyklioacalles Stüben, 1999 is presented, combining two mitochondrial genes (CO1 and 16S) in a Bayesian analysis. Based on molecular data, the validity of the subspecies Kyklioacalles punctaticollis punctaticollis (Lucas, 1849) and Kyklioacalles punctaticollis meteoricus (Meyer, 1909) is discussed and the morphological differentiation of the endophalli and known distributions of both subspecies are verified. Glaberacalles subg. n. (formerly Kyklioacalles punctaticollis-group) and two new species are described, Kyklioacalles atlasicus sp.n. from Morocco and Kyklioacalles plantapilosus sp.n. from Spain. Kyklioacalles berberi (Stüben, 2005), comb. n. and Kyklioacalles olcesei (Tournier, 1873) comb. n. are transferred from Acalles Schoenherr. The molecular results further advocate a transfer of Onyxacalles pyrenaeus (Boheman, 1844) to Kyklioacalles; however this is not supported by morphological evidence. Kyklioacalles almadensis Stüben, 2004 syn. n. (Spain) is synonymized with Kyklioacalles bupleuri Stüben, 2004 (Tunisia). A catalogue of all 40 (sub-)species of Kyklioacalles is given and a key of the species of the subgenus Glaberacalles is presented.

AbstractA well-preserved fauna of largely articulated trilobites is described from three new localities close to one another in the Bull River Valley, southeastern British Columbia. All the trilobites from these localities are from the lower or middle part of the Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Subzone of the Elvinia Zone, lower Jiangshanian, in the McKay Group. Two new species are proposed with types from these localities: Aciculolenus askewi and Cliffia nicoleae. The trilobite (and agnostid) fauna from these localities includes at least 20 species: Aciculolenus askewi n. sp., Agnostotes orientalis (Kobayashi, 1935), Cernuolimbus ludvigseni Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Cliffia nicoleae n. sp., Elvinia roemeri (Shumard, 1861), Grandagnostus? species 1 of Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Eugonocare? phillipi Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Eugonocare? sp. A, Housia vacuna (Walcott, 1912), Irvingella convexa (Kobayashi, 1935), Irvingella flohri Resser, 1942, Irvingella species B Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Olenaspella chrisnewi Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Proceratopyge canadensis (Chatterton and Ludvigsen, 1998), Proceratopyge rectispinata (Troedsson, 1937), Pseudagnostus cf. P. josepha (Hall, 1863), Pseudagnostus securiger (Lake, 1906), Pseudeugonocare bispinatum (Kobayashi, 1962), Pterocephalia sp., and Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Chatterton and Gibb, 2016. Pseudagnostus securiger, a widespread early Jiangshanian species, has not been previously recorded from southeastern British Columbia. Non-trilobite fossils collected from these localities include brachiopods, rare trace fossils, a complete silica sponge (Hyalospongea), and a dendroid graptolite. The faunas from these localities are more diverse and better preserved than those from other previously documented localities of the same age in the region.Additional specimens of a rare species, found by amateur collectors in previously documented localities of slightly younger age (upper part of Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Subzone) in the same region, are documented. Klapálek (1907) established Kamimuria as a subgenus of Perla, but later elevated it to generic rank (Klapálek 1912). Later, Klapálek (1923) designated Perla tibialis Pictet, 1841, a Japanese species, as the type species. Uchida & Isobe (1991) designated a neotype for K. tibialis and resurrected K. uenoi Kohno from synonymy. Sivec et al. (1988) redescribed the diagnostic characters of Kamimuria in reference to other Perlinae. It is a genus widespread in the Palaearctic and Oriental Regions, being particularly diverse in China. A total of 76 species have been described over the worldwide and includes 45 species residing in China (DeWalt et al. 2011, Sivec & Stark 2008, Sivec et al. 1988, 1997, Du et al. 1999, 2001, Du & Ran 2002, Du & Sivec 2004, 2005, Du & Wang 2005, 2007, Du 2006, Wu 1938, 1962, 1973). The type material of many species proposed by Wu (1935, 1936, 1938, 1940, 1947–1948) were lost because of the war, but for some species he designated neotypes (1962) which were deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica. Based on adult male morphology, two new species from China are described, and K. cheni Wu and K. Chungnanshana Wu are redescribed in this paper. The types of new species are deposited in the Insect Collection of Yangzhou University, Jiangsu, China.

Two new species of Ischnomesidae, Haplomesus celticensis sp. nov. and Haplomesus hanseni sp. nov. are described from the southwest of Ireland and the Argentine Basin respectively. Both species lack the expression of pereopod VII, a characteristic that we argue is produced by progenesis, not neoteny as suggested by Brökeland & Brandt (2004). Haplomesus angustus Hansen, 1916 and Haplomesus tropicalis Menzies, 1962, also lack pereopod VII and are revised from the type material. The original description of Haplomesus angustus Hansen, 1916 describes the adult type specimen as a juvenile; the original description of Haplomesus tropicalis Menzies, 1962 fails to mention the lack of pereopod VII. Progenesis is discussed for the above species and within the family Ischnomesidae as a whole.
