Two new synonyms in the dung beetle genus Parachorius (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) from the Oriental Region

The dung beetle genus Parachorius Harold, 1873 (= Cassolus Sharp, 1875) belongs to the monotypic tribe Parachoriini Tarasov, 2017 and includes 19 species from the Oriental and southeastern Palaearctic Regions (Tarasov 2017). Two recent studies (Ochi et al. 2017a, b) described two new species of this genus from Laos and Sumatra. The investigation of detailed descriptions and illustrations from those studies and their assessment in the light of the recent revision of Parachorius (Tarasov 2017) revealed that those new species are synonyms of earlier described ones: P. javanus (Boucomont, 1914) = P. singgalangensis Ochi, Kon & Hartini, 2017, new synonymy, and P. fukiensis (Balthasar, 1960) = C. laosensis Ochi, Kon & Higurashi, 2017, new synonymy. Unfortunately, this oversight happened because the authors of those new species did not check the type material of already described taxa.

The subgenus Marquesania Womersley (Acari : Atopomelidae : Listrophoroides) is revised. The species of this subgenus are permanent parasites living in the fur of rats (Rodentia : Murinae) in the Oriental region, Australia and New Guinea. Most of the type material has been examined. Two new species, Listrophoroides melomys, sp. nov. from Melomys moncktoni (Thomas) and L. mordax, sp. nov. from Rattus mordax (Thomas) are described from New Guinea. A new diagnosis of the subgenus Marquesania, detailed descriptions, and a key for all species is provided. The phylogenetic reconstruction of the subgenus Marquesania was effected by the method of parsimonius cladistics. The monophyly of the subgenus is strongly supported by this analysis, and most species from the Oriental region fall at the base of the cladogram. The distribution of Marquesania species on their hosts is discussed. It is suggested that these mites originated in the Oriental region and then migrated to Australia and New Guinea. The distribution of Marquesania species in the Australian and New Guinean regions is noticeably complicated, reflecting the complex settling history of their hosts.

Examination of the type material of the Oriental representatives of the genus Onthophagus Latreille, 1802 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Onthophagini) deposited at the Natural History Museum in London, National Museum of Natural History in Paris, Museum of Natural History in Basel and National Museum in Prague revealed seven new synonyms. The names synonymized herein were described as separate species mainly for two reasons. The first reason owes to the insufficient knowledge of entire Onthophagus diversity from Oriental Region and the fact that authors describing new species did not check the type material or even original descriptions for already described taxa. The following synonymized species were likely described due to this oversight: O. anamalaiensis Balthasar, 1974; O. chulapornus Masumoto, Ochi & Hanboonong, 2008; O. demaak Masumoto, 1989; O. jucundus Arrow, 1931; O. laosensis Frey, 1971; and O. parvidens Frey, 1971. The second reason is the great range of intraspecific variation of such allometric characters as shape of head, horns and pronotum in Onthophagus. Therefore, detailed examination of the external characters for the large series of specimens, and careful study of male genitalia are required for reliable species identification. Unfortunately, this was not the case for many new species descriptions. In particular, O. perroti Paulian, 1978, was described as a species but actually only represents the minor form of O. orientalis Harold, 1868. The lectotype of O. gracilipes is designated in order to preserve the stability of zoological nomenclature.

Abstract—A synopsis of Dicliptera (Acanthaceae) for Brazil is presented. Six species are recognized: Dicliptera ciliaris, D. sexangularis, and D. squarrosa, widely distributed in South America; D. purpurascens, which ranges from the North Region of Brazil (in the state of Acre) to eastern Bolivia; D. gracilirama, a new species from the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil; and D. granchaquenha, a new species recorded in dry and semideciduous forests in Bolivia and western Brazil, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Furthermore, we propose new synonyms and designate lectotypes for eleven names. An identification key to the six accepted Dicliptera species in Brazil is provided.

The presumed lost type of Arma pallipes Dallas is found and Thomas’s (1992) neotype is hereby set aside (ICZN 1999, Art. 75.8). A. pallipes is proposed as junior subjective synonym of Podisus ventralis (Dallas). A lectotype designation by inference of holotype (Gaedike 1971) is accepted for the female typical specimen of P. neniator deposited at Senckenberg Deutsches Entomologisches Institut (SDEI, Müncheberg, Germany) (ICZN 1999, Art. 74.6). Two new species of Podisus Herrich-Schäffer are described: Podisus graziae Brugnera, Roell & Lemaître sp. nov. and Podisus thomasi Lemaître, Roell & Brugnera sp. nov. Photographs of all types as well as of live specimens are provided.

The genus Surenus Distant, 1901 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomoidea: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Halyini) is revisited and found to be a junior subjective synonym of the genus Agathocles Stål, 1876 (currently Pentatominae: Rolstoniellini). The genus Agathocles and its type species, Agathocles limbatus Stål, 1876, are redescribed. Lectotype of Surenus normalis Distant, 1901 (= Agathocles normalis (Distant, 1901) comb. nov.) is designated and the unknown male of the species is described. Agathocles yunnanensis Zhang & Lin, 1984, syn. nov., is considered junior subjective synonym of A. limbatus. Two new species are described: Agathocles flavipes sp. nov. from India (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu) and A. joceliae sp. nov. from Malaysia (Kelantan, Perak). The new species differ from their congeners mainly by the morphology of mandibular plates, length of antennomeres I, IIa and IIb, body length, and structure of male genitalia. Agathocles dubius Distant, 1921 is transferred to the genus Caystrus Stål, 1861 (Pentatominae: Caystrini) based on examination of its holotype with the resulting new combination: Caystrus dubius (Distant, 1921), comb. nov. One new combination is proposed, Paramecocoris ruficornis (Fieber, 1851), comb. nov. (from preoccupied Paramecus Fieber, 1851), and its type locality is clarified as Tenasserim (south Myanmar). Gender agreement and authorship of the name Riazocoris niger Ahmad & Afzal, 1977 in Ahmad et al. (1977: 161) are corrected and status of its name bearing type is clarified as lectotype. The following new distribution records are given: A. limbatus from Cambodia, China (Guangxi, Tibet), Laos and Thailand, A. normalis, Caystrus obscurus (Distant, 1901a) and Critheus lineatifrons Stål, 1869 from Laos, Amasenus corticalis Stål, 1863 from Cambodia, Indonesia (E Kalimantan), Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, and Rolstoniellus boutanicus (Dallas, 1849) from Vietnam. Based on characters of external morphology and genitalia, the genus Agathocles is compared with representatives of the genera Halys Fabricius, 1803 (Halyini), Caystrus (Caystrini), Laprius Stål, 1861 (Myrocheini), and Exithemus Distant, 1902 (currently in Rolstoniellini). As a result, the genus Agathocles is here transferred to the tribe Caystrini. The genus Kyrtalus Van Duzee, 1929 is tentatively placed in Myrocheini based on the presence of sulcate mesosternum and femora provided with teeth.

Two new species of Ctenitis (Dryopteridaceae) from South America are described and illustrated: Ctenitis christensenii is endemic to southeastern Brazil and C. glandulosa occurs from southeastern to northeastern Brazil and in Guyana. An identification key and notes about the distribution, habitat and taxonomy of the new species, C. falciculata and allies are provided. Moreover, seven lectotypifications and two new synonyms are proposed.

The subgenus Leucandrena of the genus Andrena of eastern Asia is revised, and seven species are recognized. Two new species, Andrena (Leucandrena) paramelanospila and Andrena (Leucandrena) banchan are described from Beijing and Xizang (China) respectively, and the male of Andrena (Leucandrena) melanospila Cockerell is described for the first time. A. (Euandrena) taisetsusana Tadauchi et Hirashima, and A. (Andrena) dolharubang Tadauchi and Xu are recognized as new synonyms of the Holarctic A. barbilabris (Kirby). A key to East Asian Leucandrena is given.

The harvestman genus Bonea Roewer, 1914 and its type species B. sarasinorum Roewer, 1914 are redescribed based on the type material. In addition, two new species of Bonea from Hainan Island, China, are described and illustrated: B. zhui sp. nov. and B. tridigitata sp. nov. A new species of Lomanius Roewer, 1923 from Yunnan Province, China, is also described and illustrated: L. bulbosus sp. nov.. Keys to the 10 species of Bonea and the six species of Lomanius are provided. Paralomanius Goodnight & Goodnight, 1948 is revalidated from the synonymy of Lomanius, carrying as junior synonym Eulomanius Roewer, 1949, and containing two species from Micronesia (Paralomanius longipalpus Goodnight & Goodnight, 1948) and Philippines (Paralomanius mindanaoensis (Suzuki, 1977) new status). Bonea is transferred from the Ibaloniinae to Podoctinae. These are the first records of named species of Podoctidae from China.
