A new species of Scolelepis (Polychaeta: Spionidae) from sandy beaches in China, with a review of Chinese Scolelepis species

A new species of Spionidae, Scolelepis (Scolelepis) daphoinos sp. nov., is described and illustrated from northern China seas. The species was frequently encountered and highly abundant on sand beaches, but rarely found in subtidal areas. It was formerly misidentified as S. (S.) squamata (Müller, 1806) in China but differed from the latter species in several details in morphology, including the presence of obvious reddish pigmentation patches and the absence of unidentate hooded hooks. Another two Scolelepis species, S. (S.) lingulata Imajima, 1992 and S. (S.) variegata Imajima, 1992, are reported for the first time from Chinese waters. Two species of Scolelepis, S. (S.) globosa Wu & Chen, 1964 and S. (S.) lefebvrei (Gravier, 1905), were reported previously; therefore, five species in this genus are known from China in total. A key to all Scolelepis species from Chinese waters is provided.

Descriptions of a new species and two new records of species of the genus Allokepon Markham, 1982 from Chinese waters are presented. The host species were portunid crabs. Allokepon hendersoni (Giard & Bonnier 1887) was found infesting Charybdis bimaculata (Miers), A. monodi (Bourdon, 1967) infesting Portunus pelagicus (L), Portunus trituberculatus (Miers), and Thalamita sp. and A. longicauda n. sp. infesting Portunus pulchricristatus (Gorden). Three of the host species were recorded for the first time harboring isopod parasites, and the male of A. monodi is presented. Allokepon longicauda n. sp. is distinguished from the other four species found in China by the long slender uropods of females.

A new species of the orbiniid genus Phylo, P. heterochaetus sp. n., is described based on material collected from northern Yellow Sea, China. This is the thirteenth species in Phylo Kinberg, 1866. The new species can be easily identified by the combination of the following characters: anterior thorax with 13 setigers, interramal cirri absent, anterior thoracic neuropodia with 4–5 rows of uncini, intermixed with few subuluncini in the first 1–2 rows, ventral fringe of numerous of stomach papillae present on setigers 12–24. We also described and illustrated P. fimbriata, which is recorded for the first time from China seas.

The genus Sphaeronemoura is reported from the Palaearctic Region for the first time, accompanied with a new species added from northern China, Sphaeronemoura songshana sp. nov. Sphaeronemoura hamistyla (Wu, 1962) is redescribed and reillustrated for comparison based on the holotype and fresh material. Their relationships with close relatives are discussed. Unassociated females for one species are also described for further understanding of the genus under informal designation. Clarification or further definition of the generic characters and remarks on questions of Shimizu & Sivec (2001) are presented.

Description of a new species Apocepon leucosiae sp. nov. of genus Apocepon Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1930 from Chinese waters, a redescription of Apocepon pulcher Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1930 from the type locality and the second record of Apocepon digitatum Stock, 1959 are presented. All hosts are in the brachyuran family Leucosiidae. Four purse crab species, i.e. Philyra carinata Bell, Philyra heterograna Ortmann, Leucosia sinica Shen et Chen and Leucosia anatum (Herbst), are recorded for the first time as hosts of parasitic isopods of this genus. A brief differential diagnosis, data on the distribution and a key to the three species in the genus Apocepon are provided.

Homoneura (Homoneura) hanmaensis sp. nov. is described as new to science and 12 species are recorded from China for the first time: Homoneura (Homoneura) albomarginata Czerny, 1932, Homoneura (H.) biumbrata (Loew, 1847), Homoneura (H.) cerina Shatalkin, 2000, Homoneura (H.) euaresta (Coquillett, 1898), Homoneura (H.) filiola Czerny, 1932, Homoneura (H.) kaszabi Shewell, 1971, Homoneura (H.) lamellata (Becker, 1895), Homoneura (H.) mediospinosa Merz, 2003, Homoneura (H.) patella Shewell, 1971, Homoneura (H.) shewelliana Papp, 1978, Homoneura (H.) spinicauda Sasakawa and Ikeuchi, 1982, Homoneura (H.) tenera (Loew, 1846). A few of photographs and illustrations are provided for eight species. Keys are provided to separate eight species groups and Chinese species of eight species groups of subgenus Homoneura.

The small Microgastrinae genus Venanides is recorded from Europe (Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic) for the first time, where one species, Venanides carcinae sp. nov., described here, proves to be a regular solitary parasitoid of Carcina quercana. Outline notes on its biology, phenology and abundance are given.

The oribatid mite subgenus Scheloribates (Topobates) Grandjean, 1958, is recorded from the Neotropical region for the first time. A new species of this subgenus is described from the leaf litter collected in Cayo Agua Island, Panama. Scheloribates (Topobates) panamaensis sp. nov. differs from its related species by the very large body size and presence of a strong ventrodistal process on the leg femora II–IV.

The Palaearctic species of the genus Trichardis Hermann, 1906 are reviewed. A new species, T. lehri sp. nov., is described. A new synonymy is established: T. leucocoma (van der Wulp, 1899) = T. afanasievae Lehr, 1964, syn. nov. The male of T. mongolica V. Richter, 1972 is described for the first time. External features and the male genitalia of T. lehri sp. nov., T. leucocoma (van der Wulp, 1899) and T. mongolica V. Richter, 1972 are illustrated with photographs.

A review of species of the genus Blera Billberg, 1820 known from China is given. A new species, Blera longiseta sp. nov., is described. Three species, B. japonica (Shiraki, 1930), B. nitens (Stackelberg, 1923) and B. violovitshi Mutin, 1991, are recorded for the first time from China. An illustrated key to species is provided.

Two braconid genera from the subfamily Alysiinae, Lodbrokia Hedqvist, 1962 and Asyntactus Marshall, 1898, are recorded in the fauna of Russia and in the Asian continent for the first time. A new species Lodbrokia uralica sp. nov. is described from the Urals, and a key to species of this genus is provided. Redescriptions of the female and male of Asyntactus rhogaleus Marshall, 1898 with information about the level of variability of its morphological characters are given. Asyntactus sigalphoides Marshall, 1898 is synonymised with A. rhogaleus Marshall, 1898 (syn. nov.).
