An account is given of the species of Sarcophaga Meigen, 1826 subgenus Heteronychia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889 known from the island of Sardinia (Italy). Most of the nearly 1,400 specimens examined were collected in the SW part of the island during 2003–2006 as part of a project investigating the arthropod diversity of the Monti Marganai and Montimannu areas (respectively Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano provinces). The study resulted in the finding of eight species of Heteronychia, six of which are recorded from Sardinia for the first time. Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) penicillata Villeneuve, 1907, previously mentioned in the literature, is excluded from the fauna of the island. Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) thirionae (Lehrer, 1976) is recorded for the first time from Europe and North Africa (Algeria). One species, Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) gabrielei sp. nov., from various sites in the limestone massif of Marganai, is described as new. Previously unpublished records from other Italian regions and from other countries (Algeria, Canary Islands, Greece) are also given for several species. Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) schnabli Villeneuve, 1911 is recognized as a junior synonym of S. (H.) consanguinea Rondani, 1860 syn. nov. The possible synanthropy of Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) pandellei (Rohdendorf, 1937) is briefly discussed. A key to males and females of all known Sardinian and Corsican species of Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) is provided.

Fourteen species of Tipula (Vestiplex Bezzi, 1924) crane flies (Diptera, Tipulidae) known from Mongolia are taxonomically revised. Identification keys for males and females, redescriptions and illustrations of all species are presented. Most genital structures are illustrated for the first time. Tipula (V.) jakut Alexander, 1934 is designated as junior synonym of T. (V.) sintenisi Lackschewitz, 1933; T. (V.) kamchatkana Alexander, 1934 is designated as junior synonym of T. (V.) mediovittata Mik, 1889. Tipula (V.) balioptera Loew, 1863 and T. (V.) leucoprocta Mik, 1889 are listed as new records for the Mongolian fauna.

The Afrotropical representatives of the hover fly genus Mesembrius Rondani, 1857 (Diptera) are divided into two subgenera, namely Mesembrius s.s. and Vadonimyia Séguy, 1951 and, in this present work, the subgenus Mesembrius s.s. is revised. A total of 23 Mesembrius s.s. species are recognised for the Afrotropics. Known species are re-described and six species new to science are described: Mesembrius arcuatussp. nov., M. copelandisp. nov., M. longipilosussp. nov., M. sulcussp. nov., M. tibialissp. nov. and M. vockerothisp. nov. Mesembrius africanus (Verrall, 1898) is considered a junior synonym of M. senegalensis (Macquart, 1842), M. ctenifer Hull, 1941 a junior synonym of M. caffer (Loew, 1858), M. lagopus (Loew, 1869) a junior synonym of M. capensis (Macquart, 1842) and M. platytarsis Curran, 1929 a junior synonym of M. simplicipes Curran, 1929. The females of Mesembrius chapini Curran, 1939, M. rex Curran, 1927 and M. regulus (Hull, 1937) are described for the first time. Lectotypes are designated for Mesembrius caffer, M. capensis, M. cyanipennis (Bezzi, 1915), M. minor (Bezzi, 1915), M. senegalensis, M. strigilatus (Bezzi, 1912) and M. tarsatus (Bigot, 1883). Separate identification keys for males and females are presented. We obtained 236 DNA barcodes for 18 species. The relationships amongst the different Mesembrius species are briefly discussed, based on morphological and DNA barcode data.

The genus Atomopria Kieffer, 1911 currently includes two only described species: A. fulvicornis Kieffer, 1911, from north-western Italy (Liguria) and A. rufithorax Kieffer, 1911, from Tunisia (Tunis). The following ten new species are described from North Africa and Canary Islands: A. helenae n. sp. (Algeria, Kabylia), A. giachinoi n. sp. (Algeria, Kabylia), A. lisae n. sp. (Algeria, Kabylia), A. olmii n. sp. (Canary Islands, Gran Canaria), A. ortegae n. sp. (Canary Islands, Tenerife), A. boffai n. sp. (Canary Islands, Tenerife), A. cavazzutii n. sp. (Canary Islands, Tenerife), A. longicornis n. sp. (Canary Islands, Tenerife), A. paglianoi n. sp. (Canary Islands, Tenerife), A. scaramozzinoi n. sp. (Canary Islands, Tenerife). Diagnostic morphological features of representatives of this genus are described; male genitalia of some species are illustrated for the first time. The synonymy of the genus Atomopria with Basalys Westwood, 1832 is also hypothesized, but not proposed in this contribution. A key for identification of all species is provided, both for females and males. Finally, some taxonomic and biogeographic questions are briefly debated.

Perdita subgenus Heteroperdita Timberlake, a distinctive subgenus of 22 species from the southwestern United States and adjacent Mexico, all specialists on Tiquilia (Boraginaceae), is revised. Nine new species are described: Perdita (Heteroperdita) desdemona Portman, sp. n., P. (H.) exusta Portman & Griswold, sp. n., P. (H.) hippolyta Portman & Griswold, sp. n. (male previously incorrectly described as P. pilonotata Timberlake), P. (H.) hooki Portman & Neff, sp. n., P. (H.) nuttalliae Portman, sp. n., P. (H.) prodigiosa Portman & Griswold, sp. n., P. (H.) sycorax Portman, sp. n., P. (H.) titania Portman & Griswold, sp. n., and P. (H.) yanegai Portman, sp. n. The following sexes are associated and described for the first time: the male of P. (H.) frontalis Timberlake, 1968, the female of P. (H.) optiva Timberlake, 1954, and the true male of P. (H.) pilonotata Timberlake, 1980. Perdita (H.) fasciatella Timberlake, 1980 is proposed as a junior synonym of P. (H.) sexfasciata Timberlake, 1954. A neotype is designated for P. (H.) pilonotata Timberlake, 1980. Two species in particular, P. prodigiosa and P. pilonotata, are sexually dimorphic with distinctive ant-like males. Information is presented on floral relationships, phenology, and geographic distribution. Identification keys for males and females are provided.

Pothea carpinteroi sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Ectrichodiinae) is described based on two male specimens from Mexico. Pothea aeneonitens Stål, 1864 and P. lugens (Fabricius, 1803) are recorded from French Guiana for the first time. Taxonomical notes on these latter two species and P. haematogaster Breddin, 1903 and P. sanguiniventris Miller, 1956 are also presented. A lectotype is designated for P. lugens. Pothea centralis Walker, 1873, treated as a junior synonym of P. lugens by previous authors, is regarded as a potentially valid species. Color variation in the sternites of males and females of P. frontalis (Lepeletier & Serville, 1825) are recorded for the first time. Photographs of the type specimens of P. aeneonitens, P. bivittata Champion, 1899, P. centralis, P. frontalis, P. haematogaster, P. halffteri Carpintero, 1980, P. lugens, P. maculata Champion, 1899, P. reyesi Carpintero, 1980, P. sanguiniventris and P. venatrix Hussey, 1953, are presented.

Thirty-nine species of Sarcophaginae are recorded from Buenos Aires Province (Argentina). A new species, Microcerella asymmetrica sp. nov., is described. Females of Oxysarcodexia bicolor Lopes, O. marina Hall, and Sarcophaga (Lipoptilocnema) koehleri Blanchard are described for the first time. Four nomenclatorial actions are reported: Sarcohelicobia elegans Blanchard is established as a new junior synonym of Nephochaetopteryx cyaneiventris Lopes, and lectotypes are designated for Oxysarcodexia delpontei Blanchard [a junior synonym of Oxysarcodexia paulistanensis (Mattos)], Sarcophaga argentina Brèthes [a junior synonym of Sarcophaga (Liopygia) argyrostoma (Robineau-Desvoidy)], and Neobellieria brethesi Blanchard [a junior synonym of Sarcophaga (Neobellieria) polistensis Hall]. Blaesoxipha (Tephromyia) hospes (Aldrich), Peckia (Euboettcheria) florencioi (Prado & Fonseca), Ravinia advena (Walker), R. aureopyga (Hall) and Sarcodexia lambens (Wiedemann) are newly recorded from Buenos Aires Province, and Udamopyga percita is newly recorded from Argentina. A key is presented to the adult males and females of 36 of the 39 species of Sarcophaginae recorded from Buenos Aires province. Notes on distribution, biology, life history and host records are also given.

Tychius bicolor Brisout, 1862 and Sibinia arenariae Stephens, 1831 are reported from the Archipelago of Madeira, respectively Madeira and Porto Santo, for the first time. Two additional specimens of T. filirostris Wollaston, 1854, known previously from only two specimens from Porto Santo, were examined. Following the study of these specimens and others from the Canary Islands (Tenerife, La Palma) and Selvagen Pequena, T. colonnellii Caldara, 1991 from Tenerife is proposed as a junior synonym of T. filirostris.

Eutetrapha velutinofasciata Pic was established for a unique female specimen from Beijing, China. Breuning (1952) transferred it to the genus Paraglenea Bates based on one additional female specimen from Inn-shan (China: Inner Mongolia), a transfer which was not widely accepted. We describe the male and postulate the host plant for the first time. Habitus photographs as well as illustrations of the male genitalia and claws are presented. After careful examination of both the holotype of E. velutinofasciata Pic, and the holotype, one paratype, as well as a series of specimens including males and females of Paraglenea nigromaculata Wang et Jiang, P. nigromaculata Wang et Jiang was found to be a junior synonym of E. velutinofasciata Pic.

Island ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to the introduction of exotic species that can have an impact on local fauna and flora. Here, the carpenter bee Xylocopa pubescens is reported in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) for the first time. This species is native to North Africa and the Near East and shows a rapid dispersion across the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, together with a single record in the southernmost tip of the island. Different hypotheses about its arrival to the island are discussed.

The genus Amicta Heylaerts, 1881 is revised on the basis of morphological and molecular studies. It is shown that, in addition to the already known taxa, there are three others that had previously remained unknown and are therefore described here as Amicta lutensis sp. nov., Amicta bouhedmaensis sp. nov. and Amicta chambiana sp. nov. Furthermore, the status of three more taxa is discussed and all three are raised to species rank: Amicta nigrescens Staudinger, 1900 stat. rev., Amicta acutella Krüger, 1931 stat. rev. and Amicta arabica (Wiltshire, 1949) stat. rev. It has also been shown that the genus Hyalopteronia Solyanikov, 2002 syn. nov. is synonymous with Amicta Heylaerts, 1881. The type species Hyalopteronia davarica Solyanikov, 2002 is recombined and placed with Amicta: Amicta davarica (Solyanikov, 2002) comb. nov., and Amicta syrtana Krüger, 1939 syn. nov. regarded as junior synonym of A. murina Krüger 1939. The results of this study give an overview of the systematics and distribution of the genus Amicta (with the exception of the species from the Canary Islands).
