A glomus tumor is a soft tissue tumor that arises from the glomus body, a peripheral organ responsible for temperature regulation of the skin. It accounts for about 1% to 5% of tumors occurring in the hand, is mainly located in the subungal, and is less than 1 cm in size. Diagnosis is mainly based on clinical symptoms, and the main symptoms are pain at the site of glomus tumor, pinpoint tenderness, and cold intolerance. The pain is severe and usually requires surgical resection, and the results of treatment are good with complete resection of the tumor. In this case report, the patient is a 37-year-old female who developed pain in the radial side around the proximal interphalangeal joint of the right second finger without any traumatic history. On physical examination and imaging, it was diagnosed as a glomus tumor of the digital nerve and resected. After surgery, the symptoms improved and there was no recurrence. A careful examination and accurate diagnosis and treatment are necessary for symptomatic masses.

Abstract Industrial production of REBa2Cu3O7-δ (REBCO) coated conductors made it possible to construct the 32 T magnet, the first successful all-superconducting user magnet to exceed 30 T, which now serves users as SCM4 (Superconducting Magnet) at the NHMFL. Here we present an analysis of the damage that occurred in late-stage proof testing of the 32 T prototype coil after many essential facets of the design had been proven through more than 100 intentionally triggered quenches at fields up to 24 T. This prototype coil was then subjected to accelerated charge-discharge cycles at a rate 44 times faster than its design ramp rate to attempt to address its fatigue tolerance. The extra hysteresis loss of the fast ramps led to heating of the end pancakes which induced, after 55 fatigue cycles, 3 spontaneous quenches at progressively lower currents. Recognizing that the coil was damaged, the pancakes were then unwound and their REBCO tapes run through our continuous in-field transport Ic and remnant-field magnetization monitoring device, YateStar, which revealed 3 highly localized zones of low Ic in the end pancake that induced quench. Careful examination of these zones, especially the most intensely damaged one, revealed that the worst hot spot reached at least 779C during the quenches. Magneto-optical imaging showed that this damaged zone was about 5 mm in diameter and indeed the perpendicular damage length induced in neighboring turns by this localized quench heating was almost as great. Although there is much present concern about fatigue crack propagation from edge defects, we actually attribute this damage not to fatigue but to fluctuations in vortex pinning density due to imperfect BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorod growth that locally reduced the critical current Ic. These localized low-Ic regions then had to shed their excess current into the copper stabilizer, producing intense heating. We provide transmission and scanning electron microscopy evidence for local fluctuations of the BZO pinning structure and relate it to recent work that shows significant variations of 4 K, high field Ic values due to apparent production fluctuations of the growth conditions of the Zr-doped Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) REBCO used for this test magnet.

Abstract One of the most significant results in syntax has been a deep empirical and, to some degree, theoretical understanding of the argument/adjunct distinction, which underlies a range of superficially disparate phenomena. Therefore, any phenomenon that seems to challenge the argument/adjunct distinction merits careful examination. This paper investigates just such a phenomenon: proleptic PPs. Previous claims about the argument/adjunct status of proleptic PPs are contradictory and mostly unsubstantiated. The paper subjects proleptic PPs to argument/adjunct diagnostics and shows that they unambiguously pattern as arguments: they cannot iterate, survive do so–replacement, or be stranded under vP-pseudoclefting; reconstruct for Condition C under vP-preposing; and are L-selected. They also pattern as arguments on a novel argument/adjunct diagnostic developed here, selectional switch: if adding XP to a structure changes the selectional interactions between a head Y and some ZP ≠ XP, then XP is an argument. Finally, the paper considers counterarguments to the view it defends, showing that they are unsuccessful or irrelevant. Thus, even XPs whose argument/adjunct status initially seems murky can turn out on closer scrutiny to pattern unambiguously as one or the other, supporting the traditional but not uncontested view that the argument/adjunct distinction runs deep, and suggesting that it may be categorical.

Since the pandemic of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), especially in the centers most affected, the symptoms such as fever, cough, myalgia or fatigue, and radioactive signs typically related to COVID-19 like ground-glass opacity (GGO) often distract the attention of physicians from other diseases. Aspiration pneumonia and COVID-19 share similarities in some aspects. There may be risk of misdiagnosis in the case of considering radiological patterns of pneumonia. Early diagnosis and treatment often greatly improve prognosis. We herein reported a case of 40-year-old patient who underwent chest CT scan with the discovery of ground-glass opacity, intralobular reticular opacity and interlobular septal thickening, consolidation, and air bronchogram sign, which were mainly located in the middle and upper lobes of the right lung. It was considered to be infection related pneumonia based on the negative reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) result of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The next-generation sequencing (NGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was performed and detected nucleic acid sequences of Klebsiella sp. Consequently, the patient accepted sensitive intravenous antibiotics therapy for 13 days and had a remarkable clinical and radiological improvement. His case was followed up through imaging procedures. Because of possible radiologic and clinical similarities between aspiration and COVID-19 pneumonia, COVID-19 can be of some value in proposing a differential diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia. Clinicians could suggest a correct diagnosis by careful examination of the CT images together with attention to the clinical history and judicious utilization of NGS, especially.

The presence of mud lobster mounds is a common natural feature along coastal areas and tidal influence habitats in Sarawak. However, the number of species of mud lobsters that constructed the mounds is yet to be ascertained. This paper reviews historical records and geographical distribution of mud lobster in Sarawak from various forms of literature. The early records of mud lobster were from Buntal in Kuching, and Lingga in Sri Aman back more than 130 years ago. A few other records were reported from the central and northern regions of Sarawak between 1928 and 2019. All these records have identified mud lobster of Sarawak as Thalassina anomala (Herbst, 1804). Our present study at two sites in Buntal area with a careful examination of morphological characters of fresh specimens has confirmed the taxonomy of the species and its existence in the area. Some ecological characteristics of the mud lobster, such as size variation, population density, and mound characteristics, are also discussed. The present study also found that construction of massive mounds by mud lobster has posed a conflict to farmers and coastal communities at Buntal area, who regarded the animal as a pest. On the other hand, research on the potential medicinal value of mud lobster in Sarawak is growing. This implies that accurate taxonomy and comprehensive ecological data of T. anomala are necessary to support best practices of mud lobster pest management and sustainable harvesting of the animal for medicinal purposes, which eventually lead to conserving the animal.

Lack of representation of children from nondominant cultural and linguistic backgrounds continues to be problematic in children’s literature, and especially within early literacy texts for beginning readers. One remedy is for children to tell their own stories through the language experience approach, which can then be printed into culturally relevant texts and used for beginning reading material in classrooms. To truly capture a student’s story, especially if the student is an emergent bilingual, a teacher must listen very closely and take care when adjusting the child’s story. Two Bakhtinian concepts support the careful examination of a teacher’s scribing of story in this study: chronotope, used here as the time-space sphere above the text, and revoicing, or the retelling of a child’s story that is paraphrased or altered. Findings show that gesture within the chronotope of the story is an especially generative tool for student storytelling and that teachers must reflect closely on intentional or unintentional reasons for revoicing a child’s story. Language experience approach holds possibilities for the creation of children’s culturally relevant texts. As such, it is important that teachers reflect on their language experience approach techniques so that the book remains true to the child’s story.

Abstract Brexit has been at the centre of the last two British elections and the past legislative term. The UK's exit from the European Union was characterized by a series of parliamentary setbacks, with several government defeats, continuous rebellions and cross-party agreements made to secure control of the agenda. In the research reported in this article, we analyse the parliamentary Brexit process through careful examination of the 12 indicative votes held in Westminster in 2019 to find an alternative solution to Theresa May's exit agreement. We map the choices of each MP along two relevant dimensions, connecting them to the socioeconomic structure of their constituencies as well as to the preferences expressed in the 2016 Brexit referendum. Moreover, we associate these parliamentary behaviours – and thus MPs' attitudes towards compromise and responsiveness – to the gains and losses experienced during the subsequent 2019 general election.

Learning-to-rank has been intensively studied and has shown significantly increasing values in a wide range of domains, such as web search, recommender systems, dialogue systems, machine translation, and even computational biology, to name a few. In light of recent advances in neural networks, there has been a strong and continuing interest in exploring how to deploy popular techniques, such as reinforcement learning and adversarial learning, to solve ranking problems. However, armed with the aforesaid popular techniques, most studies tend to show how effective a new method is. A comprehensive comparison between techniques and an in-depth analysis of their deficiencies are somehow overlooked. This paper is motivated by the observation that recent ranking methods based on either reinforcement learning or adversarial learning boil down to policy-gradient-based optimization. Based on the widely used benchmark collections with complete information (where relevance labels are known for all items), such as MSLRWEB30K and Yahoo-Set1, we thoroughly investigate the extent to which policy-gradient-based ranking methods are effective. On one hand, we analytically identify the pitfalls of policy-gradient-based ranking. On the other hand, we experimentally compare a wide range of representative methods. The experimental results echo our analysis and show that policy-gradient-based ranking methods are, by a large margin, inferior to many conventional ranking methods. Regardless of whether we use reinforcement learning or adversarial learning, the failures are largely attributable to the gradient estimation based on sampled rankings, which significantly diverge from ideal rankings. In particular, the larger the number of documents per query and the more fine-grained the ground-truth labels, the greater the impact policy-gradient-based ranking suffers. Careful examination of this weakness is highly recommended for developing enhanced methods based on policy gradient.

Machiel Kiel’s attitude towards the culture of the Second Bulgarian Empire was extremely negative. In this regard, he blatantly manipulated and falsified the results of historical and archaeological studies. In his opinion, the Bulgarian cities of the 13th–14th centuries were small and unsightly, the churches were rough and impersonal, and the palaces of the kings were poky and ugly. Kiel told outright lies about the conquest of Bulgaria by the Ottoman Turks in the late 14th century. A careful examination of the available data shows quite a different picture. According to demographic studies of world-renowned academicians, such as P. Bairoch, J. Batou and P. Chèvre, medieval Bulgarian cities ranked among the best developed cities on the Old Continent. Moreover, according to the latest study, the capital of Tarnovgrad was on par with Rouen, the second largest city in France, and the southern capital of Toulouse, and had almost as many inhabitants as Cologne, the capital in the Holy Roman Empire. In Tarnovgrad, a total of 64 Christian churches have been uncovered so far, almost all of which were icon-painted and had marble and ceramic artistic decoration. In comparison, in the early 15th century, there were 53 churches and 19 monasteries in Thessaloniki, the second largest city of the Byzantine Empire.

A careful examination of Diana and Callisto, painted by Titian (London, National Gallery and Edinburgh, National Galleries of Scotland), its copy by Rubens (Knowsley Hall, Earl of Derby) and the version by Titian’s workshop in Vienna (Kunsthistorisches Museum) reveals details hitherto unrecognised by scholars. Although marginal, these take on extraordinary iconographic and communicative value, and it is precisely through these details that Titian evokes the mutations of the nymph Callisto narrated by Ovid in the Metamorphoses (2.401-530). The way in which the details are depicted and coordinated within the composition allows the beholder to experience the ‘graduality of discovery’. This is useful not only for lending the fixed image a temporality similar to that of literary narration (consisting of a ‘before’ and an ‘after’) but above all to induce, within the process of visual-perceptual discovery and its subsequent iconographic comprehension, the sequence of ‘desire-surprise-reward’ theorised by Daniel Arasse with regard to the revelatory power of detail, here applied to the polarity punctum/studium.
