A new species of peppermint shrimp, Lysmata baueri n. sp., is described based on a single specimen from the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The new species can be distinguished from other morphologically similar species of Lysmata Risso, 1816 by the number of teeth, length and shape of the rostrum, the length of the antennular peduncle relative to the scaphocerite, the number of meral and ischial articles in the second pereiopods, and the number of spines on the flexor margin of the dactyli from the third to fifth pereiopods. Morphological characters demonstrate that L. baueri n. sp., is most closely related to the eastern Pacific L. californica (Stimpson, 1866), L. nayaritensis Wicksten, 2000 and L. porteri (Rathbun, 1907).

In the oceanic zones of the Gulf of Mexico a new species of diatom was found belonging to the genus Halamphora. Live cells were isolated using basic microbiological techniques for culturing and DNA analysis. Observations to determine morphological and morphometric characteristics were performed by both light and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, a phylogeny was built based on the expression and sequencing of the small subunit of the 18S gene. As a result of these observations, we conclude that this pennate diatom is a new species here proposed as Halamphora oceanica.

Abstract Describes a new species of fossil wood--Dadoxylon (Araucarioxylon) sahariense--from continental deposits of the Emi-Fezzan region (Libia) in the Sahara. The new species is compared with other African Mesozoic Araucariaceae, and a key to the identification of species is presented.

A study of soil mites in the Brazilian Pantanal, southwestern Brazil, has shown the frequent occurrence of the genus Protogamasellus, especially in cultivated land. Three species were found in this study, Protogamasellus mica (Athias-Henriot), Protogamasellus sigillophorus Mineiro, Lindquist & Moraes, and a new species, Protogamasellus pantanal n. sp., which is here described. A taxonomic key for the identification of species of the genus was prepared, based on the examination of the type specimens of the new species here described, of specimens of other species found in Brazil in this and previous studies, and on the information found in the literature for other species.
