A key to the species of Protogamasellus (Acari: Ascidae), with a new species from the Brazilian Pantanal

A study of soil mites in the Brazilian Pantanal, southwestern Brazil, has shown the frequent occurrence of the genus Protogamasellus, especially in cultivated land. Three species were found in this study, Protogamasellus mica (Athias-Henriot), Protogamasellus sigillophorus Mineiro, Lindquist & Moraes, and a new species, Protogamasellus pantanal n. sp., which is here described. A taxonomic key for the identification of species of the genus was prepared, based on the examination of the type specimens of the new species here described, of specimens of other species found in Brazil in this and previous studies, and on the information found in the literature for other species.

Papagona Ball, 1935 was originally described based on two species from the USA (Arizona). Both species of Papagona (P. papoosa Ball, 1935, type species of genus, and P. succinea Ball, 1935) are redescribed herein based on type specimens, including their previously unknown internal male genitalia. A new species from Brazil (Roraima) is described herein including the male and female terminalia. A taxonomic key to all included species is provided and additional diagnostic characters for this genus are proposed.

New species in the genus Capillipedium Stapf is described and illustrated from Amarkantak hills of Madhya Pradesh, India. New species is similar to Capillipedium assimile (Steud.) A.Camus and C. nagense Bor but mainly diverges by having 4–6 cm panicle, 2–2.5 cm racemes, about 11–13 pairs of sessile and pedicelled spikelets in each raceme; joints and pedicels without translucent groove, 2–2.5 mm sessile spikelets and 3–3.2 mm pedicelled spikelets. A taxonomic key for genus Capillipedium in India is given to facilitate easy identification of species.

A new species, Phytocoris (Compsocerocoris) darakiensis sp. nov. is described from Kurdistan province, Iran. A taxonomic key to the species of amygdali-group of the subgenus Compsocerocoris Reuter known in Iran, male and female habitus photographs and illustrations of male genitalia of the new taxon are provided. Diagnosis of the new species is based on a comparison with other congeneric found from Iran. The type specimens were deposited in the insect collection of the University of Guilan, Rasht, Iran.

The leafhopper genus Nirvanguina Zhang & Webb (Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae: Drabescini: Paraboloponina) is reviewed, including description of a new species, Nirvanguina bifurcatus Xu & Zhang sp. nov., from China. An updated checklist along with distribution and a key to males of this genus are also provided. Type specimens of this new species are deposited in the Entomological Museum, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi, China (NWAFU).

AbstractA new nematode species Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) sciaenidicola sp. nov. is described based on specimens collected from the Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest) and the Argentine croaker Umbrina canosai Berg, from coastal waters of Argentina and Brazil. These nematodes were firstly identified as D. (C.) elongatus (Törnquist, 1931), a commonly reported species from M. furnieri in South American Atlantic waters. However, other species of Dichelyne have so far been reported from this host in the same area, namely D. (C.) rodriguesi (Pinto, Fábio et Noronha, 1970), D. (C.) amaruincai (Freitas, Vicente et Ibañez, 1969) and D. (Dichelyne) micropogonii Pereira et Costa, 1996. A careful re-examination of these parasites, as well as of type specimens of all species reported from M. furnieri, revealed that these nematodes represented a new species. The new species is distinguished from most of its congeners by having papillae 5–7 and 9 forming a subventral line close to cloaca, this feature is shared with other 6 species [D. (C.) dichelyneformis (Szidat, 1950), D. (C.) fraseri (Baylis, 1929), D. (C.) abbreviatus (Rudolphi, 1819), D. (C.) adriaticus (Törnquist, 1931), D. (C.) minutus (Rudolphi, 1819) and D. (C.) mariajuliae Alarcos, Timi, Etchegoin et Sardella, 2006)], which are readily distinguished by their body size, spicules length, distribution patterns of other papillae and position of the excretory pore and deirids. Also, D. (C.) elongatus from Umbrina canariensis (Valenciennes) from West Africa is established as a new species Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) yvonnecampanae sp. nov.; D. (C.) amaruincai from Pacific waters is considered as a valid species, D. (D.) micropogonii is regarded as species inquirendae and D. (C.) rodriguesi is identified as Cucullanus sp.

One new species, Paratrigonidium chloropodum sp. nov., is described from Hainan, China. The type specimens are deposited in East China Normal University, Biology of History Museum (ECNU). S. venustula is moved to genus Paratrigonidium as P. venustulum comb. nov. P. vittatum Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 syn. is the junior synonym of P. venustulum.

Specimens of Andreaea sect. Andreaea collected in Lesotho show morphological differences from the remaining Sub-Saharan Africa species in the group. Particularly, Lesotho specimens have much larger spores, a character diagnostic in the genus. Spore size also separates the Lesotho specimens from typical A. rupestris from the Northern Hemisphere. Consequently, we describe a new species from the highlands of Lesotho (Andreaea barbarae). Additionally, we present a taxonomic key to all accepted species of Andreaea sect. Andreaea in sub-Saharan Africa.

Axonopus fusiformis, a new species of Axonopus sect. Axonopus ser. Axonopus, similar in habit to the widespread and locally sympatric A. purpusii, is described from the Brazilian Pantanal. Diagnostic differences mainly concerning spikelet morphology are discussed and illustrated. Based on the documented occurrence, this new species seems to be the first member of the Poaceae endemic to the Pantanal.

Parapteronemobius contains 7 species or subspecies distributed in East Asia with only one species recorded from China. In this study, we reported the second species, P. chenggong He sp. nov., from Zhejiang. The new species differs from P. dibrachiatus in body size, male genitalia and COI gene. The phylogeny of this genus in subfamily Nemobiinae are discussed based on COI, 18S and 28S genes. The type specimens are deposited in the Museum of Biology, East China Normal University (ECNU).
