A characteristic new species Meotipa sahyadri n. sp. with tall and white translucent abdomen in females is described in detail based on morphology of both sexes, based on specimens collected from the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa. The new species has epigynal projection which is known only in Meotipa picturata Simon, 1895, but differs in shape (trifid vs. quadrangular respectively). Males have longest straight embolus exceeding conductor length. Observations of its natural history are provided. Meotipa picturata is newly recorded from Goa, which extends its north-westward distribution from the previously known records from ‘Kodei Kanal’, India (type locality), Ratchasima Province, Thailand and East Kalimantan, Indonesia. A new combination Meotipa andamanensis (Tikader, 1977) n. comb. (=Argyrodes andamanensis) is proposed based on the comparison of description and illustrations provided in the original paper to that of the characters of the type species M.picturata. 242 morphological characters studied in the previous literature and one additional character ‘epigynal projection’ were scored for Meotipa sahyadri n. sp. and Meotipa picturata. These species were obtained monophyletic, placed within Theridiinae as sister to Chrysso cf. nigriceps using parsimony analysis and Bayesian inference.

The spider genus Putaoa new genus (Araneae, Pimoidae) is described to place two species of pimoids from China, Putaoa huaping new species (the type species) and P. megacantha (Xu & Li, 2007) new combination. Parsimony analysis of morphological characters provides support for the monophyly of Putaoa and for its sister group relationship to the genus Weintrauboa Hormiga, 2003 and corroborates the monophyly of Pimoidae.

AbstractPatagonicolaPackernew genusis described for two species of xeromelissine bee (Hymenoptera: Colletidae) from Patagonian Argentina. One species,P. graveliPackernew speciesis described; the second species,P. aenigma(Packer)new combination, originally placed inChilicolaSpinola, 1851 subgenusChilioediscelisToro and Moldenke, 1979, is designated as the type species. The new genus is superficially most similar toXenochilicolaToro and Moldenke, 1979 but possesses none of the derived characteristics that were originally used to define that genus. Results of a phylogenetic analysis, based upon 114 morphological characters, are presented and suggest that the new genus is the sister clade to (GeodiscelisMichener and Rozen, 1999 +XeromelissaCockerell, 1926). An illustrated key is provided for the genera of Xeromelissinae and for the two species ofPatagonicola.

Two new species of the damselfly genus Euphaea Selys, 1840 (Odonata: Euphaeidae) are described from the Western Ghats of Satara District, Maharashtra, distinguished by their distinct morphology and coloration. E. thosegharensis Sadasivan & Bhakare sp. nov. is similar to E. cardinalis (Fraser, 1924), but is distinguished by the extensor and flexor surface of all femora black while all femora bright red in E. cardinalis; apical fourth of Hw black while apical half of Hw black in E. cardinalis; genae reddish-orange, black in E. cardinalis; a tuft of sparse stub black hair on either side of tergite of S9 while both S8 and S9 with tufts of long ventral hairs in E. cardinalis.  Male genital vesicle matt black, with distal border rounded angles, while vesicle black and hexagonal in shape with rounded angles in E. cardinalis and S9 twice the length of S10, while S9 and S10 of equal length in E. cardinalis. E. pseudodispar Sadasivan & Bhakare sp. nov., is very close to E. dispar (Rambur, 1842), but is differentiated easily by the absence of yellow patch on legs as in E. dispar; only apical fifth of Hw black; genae being yellowish-white, while black in E. dispar; male genital vesicle brownish-black & rhomboid-shaped and with no transverse rugosities while black with distal border rounded and with fine transverse rugosities in E. dispar; penis with single seta on each side while E. dispar has three pairs; sternite of S9 very prominently extending ventrally like a beak in comparison with E. dispar.  We have identified additional morphological characters useful in taxonomy of Euphaea of the Western Ghats for example, tufts of ventral hairs on terminal abdominal segments genital vesicle, penile structure of males and sternite of S9 in the males, and vulvar scales of females.  A taxonomic key to all known species of genus Euphaea of the Western Ghats is also provided.

Two new species of geckos of the genus Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 are described from the southern Western Ghats of Kerala. Both species are medium to large sized Cnemaspis and can be differentiated from all other Indian congeners by a suite of distinct morphological characters. Both species are found in the high elevation forests of the two major massifs—       Anaimalai Hills and Agasthyamalai Hills and are presently known to have very restricted distributional ranges. The discovery of these novel species highlights the understudied diversity of reptiles in the high mountain ranges of the Western Ghats.

Results indicate that the genera Falsanchonus and Microniphades are paraphyletic and are here treated as junior synonyms of Microplinthus.

Two new black fly species, Simulium (Gomphostilbia) dinakarani sp. nov. and Simulium (Gomphostilbia) krishnani sp. nov. are described based on reared adult, pupal and larval specimens collected from the Western Ghats of India. These two new species are placed in the Simulium batoense species-group of the subgenus Gomphostilbia Enderlein. The morphological characters of two new species are compared with other related species of batoense species-group in India. The COI gene has successfully differentiated these two new species from its allies, S. (G.) panagudiense and S. (G.) takaokai of the batoense species group and the phylogenetic analysis by using COI gene sequences supporting its morphological classification.

Cortinarius section Xenosmatae, originally based on solely morphological characters, was subsequently shown to contain phylogenetically distantly related species. The type species C. xenosma is a singleton, and this study aims to revise the other members of the section using combined molecular (nrDNA ITS and LSU) and morphological data. Based on phylogenetic analyses using RAxML, PhyML and Bayesian Inference and additional morphological features one new species (C. paraxenosma) and one new section (sect. Olorinati) are proposed. Furthermore sect. Carbonelli is extended and emended to include two former members of sect. Xenosmatae. A key to the species in New Zealand with xenosmatoid morphology is provided.

The morphology of Putoniessa Kirkaldy is reviewed and the genus revised. In total, 28 species are recognised: the type species, P. dignissima Kirkaldy, which is removed from synonymy; one new combination, P. dorsalis (Walker); eight previously described species, P. nigra (Walker), P. minima Evans, P. mackei Evans, P. draba Evans, P. taradalensis Evans, P. sordida Evans, P. nigrella Evans and P. turneri Evans; and 18 new species, P. rieki, P, brisbanensis, P. hickmani, P, neboissi, P. stanthorpensis, P. woodwardi, P. striata, P. evansi, P. variegata, P. tasmaniensis, P. grossi, P. serrata, P. northamensis, P. bifurcata, P. kiataensis, P. watsoni, P. fusca and P. aroka. P. nota Evans is excluded from the genus, and P. maculata Evans is synonymised under P. dorsalis (Walker). P. rivularis (Walker), originally described under Bythoscopus Germar, and P. galliensis Evans are considered as species of uncertain identity. The genus is shown to have a disjunct Bassian distribution with some eastern species extending northwards into the south-east of the Tomesian province. A consensus cladogram for Putoniessa, based on morphological characters, is presented. Large areas of the cladogram remain unresolved because of high levels of homoplasy among the limited number of reliable ingroup characters available. The cladogram does not support a purely vicariant biogeographic hypothesis. Theories that receive qualified support involve an eastern origin for the group followed by either an east-to-west dispersal or a vicariance event affecting a single taxon subsequent to initial speciation. A western origin for the group is strongly refuted.

This study represents the first phylogenetic reconstruction of lumbrinerid genera using parsimony analyses of 38 morphological characters. Following higher-level phylogenetic analysis, Oenone (Oenonidae) was selected as outgroup. The analysis was restricted to type species for each genus, yielded 24 equally parsimonious trees, which after successive weighting were reduced to one tree (CI= 0.7396). The topology of this tree revealed the separation of the family into four main clades: 1. Lysarete, 2. Arabellonereis, 3. Scoletoma, Lumbrineris, Hilbigneris gen. nov., Kuwaita, Lumbricalus, Sergioneris gen. nov. and Eranno, and 4. Abyssoninoe, Cenogenus, Lumbrinerides, Lumbrineriopsis, Augeneria, Loboneris gen. nov., Gallardoneris gen. nov., Helmutneris gen. nov., and Gesaneris gen. nov.; the position of Ninoe is unclear. A diagnosis of each genus is provided, including the description of six new genera and three new species. A key to lumbrinerid genera is included.

We describe a cryptic new species of gecko of the genus Cnemaspis Strauch from the southern Western Ghats of Kerala. This medium-sized Cnemaspis species is differentiated from all other Indian congeners by a suite of the following distinct morphological characters: heterogeneous mid-dorsal scales, 6–7 supralabials; 113–120 paravertebral rows of tubercles; 71–85 mid-dorsal scales; absence of spine-like tubercles on flanks; subimbricate, smooth ventral scales; 135–140 mid-ventral scales; subdigital lamellae under fourth digit of manus 23–25; subdigital lamellae under fourth digit of pes 24–25; males with 7–8 precloacal pores; median row of subcaudals enlarged, smooth, a series of two large scales alternating, containing one divided scale; head and neck colouration brownish-yellow, consistent in adult males; adult females with orange coloured head and neck. Recent new descriptions of Cnemaspis species together with the present discovery show that the southern Western Ghats species have been overlooked by previous studies. Therefore we suggest further studies to evaluate the diversity of Cnemaspis in this region.
