We report the occurrence of the genus Bicorniphontodes George, Glatzel & Schröder, 2019 in Korean waters, with descriptions of three new species: Bicorniphontodes lacuna sp. nov., B. comptus sp. nov., and B. huysi sp. nov. Morphology analysis was carried out to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of Bicorniphontodes species, including the three new species. Parsimony analysis based on 41 characters revealed that the three new species are clustered together as a monophyletic clade, of which B. horstgeorgei (George & Gheerardyn, 2015) is a sister species. The monophyletic status of three new species was supported by five synapomorphies, such as the micro-morphological conditions of the exopodal segments of the first leg, coxae of the second to fourth legs, exopod of the fifth leg in the female and baseoendopod of the fifth leg in the male, and the maxillular endopod represented by two setae. These three species can be easily distinguished based on the morphology of the rostrum, cephalothoracic processes, female genital double-somite, caudal rami, and second endopodal segment of the third leg in the male. The taxonomic position of B. bicornis sensu Kim, 2013 in Korean fauna was reevaluated based on the newly collected material from Udo Islet near Jeju Island; this resulted in a synonym of B. huysi sp. nov.

Several sightings of different pinniped species have been recorded outside their typical areas of distribution. In May 2019, pinniped yearlings were sighted on 4 occasions on the central coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. One of them was found injured in La Escobilla (Oaxaca, Mexico) and was transported immediately to the Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga for rehabilitation. Visual identification of the species was inconclusive, as young individuals of several fur seal species can be very similar. A molecular analysis was thus performed to confirm the species. DNA was extracted from the individual, and a fragment of the mitochondrial DNA control region was sequenced and aligned with several sequences of other fur seal species. A parsimony analysis was performed, and the tree revealed that the individual was a Galapagos fur seal, Arctocephalus galapagoensis. This is the first record of this species on the central coast of Oaxaca. The atypical presence of this species in the country could be related to high sea surface temperatures associated with events such as El Niño.

Brooks Parsimony Analysis is a cladistic biogeographic method that aims to extract biogeographic information from phylogenetic trees, depicting from a group of cladograms a general pattern of relationships among the areas the taxa inhabit. We present here BuM 2.0, an online framework to automatically create matrices for Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA) using Baum & Ragan’s algorithm for Matrix Representation with Parsimony.

Ronzotherium is one of the earliest Rhinocerotidae in Europe, which first appeared just after the Eocene/Oligocene transition (Grande Coupure), and became extinct at the end of the Oligocene. It is a large-sized rhinocerotid, with a special position in the phylogeny of this group, as being one of the earliest-branching true Rhinocerotidae. However, its intra-generic systematics has never been tested through computational phylogenetic methods and it is basically unknown. Its taxonomical history has gone through numerous complications, and thus we aim to provide here a complete revision of this genus, through phylogenetic methods. After a re-examination of all type specimens (five supposed species) as well as of most well-preserved specimens from all over Europe and ranging through the complete Oligocene epoch, we performed a parsimony analysis to test the position of some problematic specimens. According to our results, five species can be distinguished, Ronzotherium velaunum (type species), R. filholi, R. elongatum and R. romani as well as a new species: R. heissigi sp. nov. We also drastically re-interpret its anatomy and show that the ‘short-limbed’ “Diaceratherium” massiliae, described from Southern France, can be considered as a junior synonym of R. romani. Finally, we exclude the Asian species “Ronzotherium” orientale and “Ronzotherium” brevirostre from Ronzotherium and we consider R. kochi as a junior synonym of R. filholi.

We present a combined molecular and morphological phylogenetic analysis of the Loricariinae, with emphasis on the Harttiini (Cteniloricaria, Harttia, and Harttiella) and Farlowellini (Aposturisoma, Farlowella, Lamontichthys, Pterosturisoma, Sturisoma, and Sturisomatichthys). Character sampling comprised seven molecular markers (the mitochondrial Cytb, nd2, 12S and 16S, and the nuclear MyH6, RAG1 and RAG2) and 196 morphological characters. A total of 1,059 specimens, and 159 tissue samples were analized, representing 100 species. A Bayesian Inference analysis was performed using the concatenated data matrix, which is comprised of 6,819 characters. The Loricariinae were found to comprise the tribes (Hartiini (Loricariini, Farlowellini)), the latter two elevated from subtribes. A Maximum Parsimony analysis was also performed using the same data matrix in order to reveal phenotypical synapomorphies to diagnose each clade. Two MP trees were found with a length of 14,704 steps, consistency index of 0.29 and retention index of 0.61, which were summarized in a strict consensus tree. Harttiini includes (Harttiella (Cteniloricaria, Harttia), and Farlowellini includes (Lamontichthys (Pterosturisoma (Sturisoma (Sturisomatichthys, Farlowella)))). Aposturisoma was recovered nested within Farlowella and is synonymyzed to the latter. Sturisoma was corroborated as strictly cis-Andean, while Sturisomatichthys encompasses, besides the valid species already included in the genus, the trans-Andean species once belonging to Sturisoma sensu lato. Identification keys and phylogenetic diagnoses of family-group taxa and genera of both the Harttiini and the Farlowellini are provided.

A new genus and species of spider (Araneae, Linyphiidae, Erigoninae) from a tropical montane cloud forest of Mexico is described from both male and female specimens, Xim trenzado gen. et sp. nov. A phylogenetic parsimony analysis situates Xim gen. nov. as a distinct genus among the distal Erigoninae. Xim gen. nov. is sister to a clade including Ceratinopsis, Tutaibo and Sphecozone, but differs from those genera by having a high cymbium, large paracymbium, short straight embolus, male cheliceral stridulatory striae widely and evenly spaced, both sexes with a post-ocular lobe, male with two series of prolateral macrosetae on femur I, and the female by having strongly oblong, u-shaped spermathecae.

Abstract Teeth are frequently used in phylogeny in order to better characterize the evolution of extinct mammal species. While most studies have focused on the adult dentition, the consideration of characters from the deciduous dentition could also contribute to reinforce phylogenetic assumptions or disentangle phylogenetic issues. We chose to investigate the characters of the deciduous dentition in cetartiodactyl taxa in relation to the disputed relationships within hippopotamoids, especially the position of Hippopotamidae. We describe the deciduous dentition of 51 species, among a dataset of 70 cetartiodactyls. We noticed that second and third deciduous premolars have a much lower degree of molarization, and are more suitable for coding than fourth deciduous premolars. Thirty-nine resulting characters were thus added to a previously published matrix, and parsimony and maximum-likelihood analyses were performed. Both analyses provided a better resolved topology for most taxa than without these characters, and with better support for most nodes in the parsimony analysis. Moreover, this analysis provides additional characters supporting the hypothesis of an emergence of hippopotamids within bothriodontine anthracotheres from the Palaeogene of Africa. The promising use of characters from the deciduous dentition in phylogeny should allow discussion of the underlying ontogenetic mechanisms at the origin of dental homology.
