        Santos-Silva et al. (2012) described Thomasella as a new genus of Rhinotragini to include a single species from Panama: Ommata (Eclipta) igniventris Giesbert, 1991. However, Thomasella is a junior homonym of Thomasella Fredericks, 1928 (Brachiopoda). To resolve this homonym, in accordance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, we are proposing Neothomasella as a new replacement name (nomen novum) for Thomasella Santos-Silva et al. (2012). The new name is a compound of the prefix “neo-” (from Greek νεο-, meaning “new”) + Thomasella; feminine gender.

O'Dogherty (1994) erected the genus Pogonias for a distinctive group of Cretaceous radiolarians characterized by a tetrahedral thoracic segment drawn out distally into divergent appendages and considered, from a stratigraphic point of view, as a useful marker for the Albian-Turonian interval. By chance, we have recently discovered that the name Pogonias has been preoccupied two times, first by a fish Pogonias La Cepède, 1801 (p. 137), and later by an aves Pogonias Illiger, 1811 (p. 202). Thus, in accordance with the requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999, article 60), we proposed the name Pogonisella nomen novum as a replacement name for Pogonias O'Dogherty, 1994, not Pogonias La Cepède, 1801, not Pogonias Illiger, 1811. The type species of Pogonisella (feminine gender) is P. prodromus by original designation (O'Dogherty, 1994).

Baesemann (1973) erected the genus Aethotaxis to accommodate morphologically distinctive conodont elements from the Pennsylvanian (Missourian) of northeastern Kansas. By chance we have recently discovered that the name is preoccupied by a notothenioid perciform fish Aethotaxis DeWitt, 1962. Thus, in accordance with Article 60 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999), we propose the name Ubinates nomen novum as a replacement for Aethotaxis Baesemann, 1973, not Aethotaxis DeWitt, 1962. Ubinates derives from the Latin ubi, meaning where (interrogative), and nates, meaning rump; this refers to the fact that it is not known which, if any, of the elements presently assigned to species of Ubinates occupied the posterior positions in the apparatus. The type species of Ubinates is U. advena by original designation (Baesemann, 1973).

Abstract. In 1994, O’Dogherty (p. 137) erected the genus Anachoreta for a distinctive multicyrtid radiolarian having pentagonal post-abdominal segments in cross-section, a feature hitherto unknown among Cretaceous nassellarians. This monospecific taxon is a useful stratigraphical marker, ranging from the latest Albian to Middle–Late Cenomanian times. Recently, it was discovered that Gistel (1848) first gave the same name Anachoreta to an insect of the suborder Symphyta (Hymenoptera) as replacement name pro Lophyrus Latreille, 1802, previously preoccupied. Therefore, in accordance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999) (Article 60), the name Pentaspongoreta is herein proposed as a replacement (type species Anachoreta sagitta O’Dogherty, 1994, p. 138, by original designation) for the preoccupied homonym Anachoreta O’Dogherty, 1994, non Gistel, 1848. Pentaspongoreta is named for its pentahedrical-shaped test and spongy meshwork; feminine gender.

Synallaxis whitneyi Pacheco and Gonzaga, 1995, was described from specimens collected in Bahia, Brazil. Some years later, following analysis of the specimens used by Wied (1831) to describe Synallaxis cinereus, Whitney and Pacheco (2001) considered S. whitneyi a junior synonym of S. cinereus because three of the specimens in Wied’s series were identical to those collected in Bahia by Pacheco and Gonzaga (1995). They also designated a lectotype for Synallaxis cinereus. Our analysis of the description of Synallaxis cinereus reveals that Wied was merely providing a new name for Parulus ruficeps Spix, 1824, to avoid problems of homonymy (Wied 1831). The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature is explicit in such cases, stating that if an author proposes a new species-group name as a replacement (nomen novum) for an earlier available one, then the two names are objective synonyms and have the same name-bearing type. Thus, the syntypes of S. cinereus are the specimens previously used by Spix in describing Parulus ruficeps and not those used by Wied (1831) in his description (and subsequently referred to as syntypes in the literature). The lectotype of Synallaxis cinereus proposed by Whitney and Pacheco (2001) is invalid, as it is not a former syntype. Therefore, the correct name for the Bahia Spinetail is Synallaxis whitneyi Pacheco and Gonzaga, 1995.

Abstract. De Wever (1982) proposed the new radiolarian name Riedelius from the Lower Jurassic of Turkey. It has been found that this name has already been used by Hudec in 1961 for a mollusc gastropod. Therefore, in accordance with Article 60 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999), the name Riedeliusella nomen novum is proposed as a replacement name (type species Riedelius williami De Wever, 1982, p. 201; 1982, by original designation) for the preoccupied homonym Riedelius De Wever, 1982, non Hudec, 1961, p. 110.

One of the oldest fossil horseshoe crabs figured in the literature is Entomolithus lunatus Martin, 1809, a Carboniferous species included in his Petrificata Derbiensia. While the species has generally been included within the genus Belinurus Bronn, 1839, it was recently used as the type species of the new genus Parabelinurus Lamsdell, 2020. However, recent investigation as to the appropriate authority for Belinurus (see Lamsdell and Clapham, 2021) revealed that all the names in Petrificata Derbiensia were suppressed in Opinion 231 of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1954) for being consistently nonbinomial under Article 11.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1999). Despite the validation of several species names for anthozoans, brachiopods, and cephalopods described in Petrificata Derbiensia in subsequent rulings (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1956a, b), Belinurus lunatus has not been the subject of any subsequent Commission ruling or opinion, and so its use in Petrificata Derbiensia remains suppressed. The Belinurus lunatus species name was used in several subsequent publications during the 1800s, none of which made the name available under ICZN article 11.5; Parkinson (1811) is also suppressed for being nonbinomial, while Woodward (1830), Buckland (1837), Bronn (1839), and Baily (1859) refer to the species only as a synonym of Belinurus trilobitoides (Buckland, 1837) through citation to the suppressed Pretificata Derbiensia. The first author to make Belinurus lunatus an available name was Baldwin (1905), who used the name in reference to a new figured specimen from Sparth Bottoms, Rochdale, UK, but again as an explicit junior synonym of Belinurus trilobitoides (Buckland, 1837). Therefore, it was not until Eller (1938) treated B. lunatus as a distinct species from B. trilobitoides that B. lunatus became an available name as per ICZN Article 11.6.1 under the authorship of Baldwin (1905) following ICZN Article 50.7.

Ditaxodon taeniatus is a striped, racer-like colubrid snake inhabiting grassland savannas in southern Brazil. This species was described as Philodryas taeniatus by the then curator of the Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (formerly Zoologisches Museum Berlin, ZMB), Wilhelm Peters, from a single specimen collected by Reinhold Hensel in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Peters’ description was published in a paper by Hensel (1868: 331) and, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999: Article 50.1, Recommendation 51E), the correct citation is Ditaxodon taeniatus (Peters in Hensel, 1868). Later, George A. Boulenger (1896: 124) transferred Philodryas taeniatus to the genus Conophis, and Alphonse R. Hoge (1958: 54) created for it the new genus Ditaxodon, which remains monotypic today.

The genus Bicarinella Rode et al., 2003 was erected for a new hipponicharionid bradoriid species described from the early Cambrian of East Antarctica, characterized by a subtriangular carapace with prominent anterior and posterior lobes developed as two distinctive, sharp ridges (bi = two, carina = ridges). Unfortunately, the name Bicarinella is preoccupied by two different gastropod genera: Bicarinella Waterhouse 1966, a Permian gastropod from New Zealand and Australia, and Bicarinella Akopyan 1976, a gastropod from Late Cretaceous strata of Armenia, Serbia, Romania, Tajikistan, and Egypt (Mennessier, 1994; Banjac, 1998; Pana, 1998). Mennessier (1994) transferred Bicarinella Akopyan, 1976 from its original status as an independent taxon to a subgenus of Pseudomesalia Douvillé 1916, but subsequent workers have continued to consider Bicarinella a valid genus (Pena, 1998; Banjac, 1998). Due to the preoccupation, the bradoriid genus is herein renamed in accordance with the requirement of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999, article 60). It is also noted here that the one of the two distinct gastropod genera should be renamed. The name Bicarinellata (bi = two, carina = ridges) is proposed as a replacement name for Bicarinella Rode et al., 2003. This name retains the original prefixes to preserve taxonomic stability as much as possible. The type species of Bicarinellata is B. evansi by original designation (Rode et al., 2003).

It has been pointed out that there is an error in our recent paper (Rentz et al., 2012). On p. 24 we designated Miniagraecia viridis Rentz, Su, Ueshima sp. nov. as the type species of  the new genus Miniagraecia. However there is no such species.  There was a manuscript change in the name of the species and we did not catch it in the type species designation.  Miniagraecia is therefore a nomen nudum. Miniagraecia viridis is not a nominal species and Miniagraecia does not now have a fixed type species (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, Article 67.1).

Markevich (1940) established Pseudolepeophtheirus Markevich, 1940 for Pseudolepeophtheirus longicauda Markevich, 1940 based on copepods collected from the pleuronectid fish Platichthys stellatus (Pallas, 1787). Dojiri & Ho (2013) synonymized the genus and the species with Lepeophtheirus Nordmann, 1832 and Lepeophtheirus parvicruris Fraser, 1920, respectively. Later, Homma et al. (2020) resurrected Markevich’s species as a member of Lepeophtheirus, i.e., as L. longicauda (Markevich, 1940). The last component of the names of both genera is ‘phtheirus’ (transliterated from the Greek φθειρ; Nordmann 1832: 30), a masculine noun, and thus under Article 30.1.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (hereinafter, Code; International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999), both generic names are also masculine. The species-group name longicauda might be regarded as either a noun in apposition or as an adjective in the feminine gender, and Markevich (1940) did not specify his intention in this regard. Bearing in mind that ‘cauda’, meaning ‘tail’, actually is a feminine Latin noun and that Markevich did not change the final ‘-a’ to ‘-us’ to match the masculine gender of the genus, we deem that longicauda Markevich, 1940 is a noun in apposition, a position supported by Article 31.2.2 of the Code.
