The Hebridae, commonly known as “velvet water bugs,” is a small family of semiaquatic bugs (Heteroptera: Gerromorpha), distributed worldwide with approximately 220 species in 2 subfamilies and 9 genera. They are small (1.3–3.7 mm) and plump-bodied, brownish to black, and usually densely covered by setae. These predacious bugs inhabit humid terrestrial or marginal freshwater habitats. In Argentina, three species in three genera have been recorded: Hebrus engaeus Drake and Chapman, 1958, Lipogomphus lacuniferus Berg, 1879 and Merragata hebroides White, 1877. The purpose of this contribution is to describe Hebrus alvearensis sp. nov., found in the central region of Argentina, and to present a key for the species of Hebridae present in the country.

Junewangia aquatica sp. nov., a new Acrodictys-like fungus was collected on submerged wood from freshwater habitats in Yunnan Province, China. J. aquatica is characterized by its flared conidiophores with percurrent proliferations, monoblastic, terminal or intercalary, cylindrical conidiogenous cells, and subglobose to broadly ellipsoidal conidia with transverse and oblique septa. A phylogenetic tree of Acrodictys-like species was inferred from multi-locus (SSU, ITS and LSU) sequences. A key to the species of Junewangia is provided.

During 1996–1997 a systematic sampling programme was carried out in brackish coastal lakes and lagoons and in the delta of the River Po. In six of the nine collecting locations, 12 species of Gastrotricha were identified. One species, Chaetonotus ichthydioides, is new to science; another three species, the chaetonotidans Heterolepidoderma foliatum and the macrodasyidans Dendrodasys ponticus and Turbanella cf. pontica, and one macrodasyidan genus, Paradasys (P. subterraneus), were found in Italy for the first time. The unusual morphology of some of the species identified shows that Gastrotricha colonized brackish waters from both marine and freshwater habitats.

A new species of Gracixalus is described from northwestern Vietnam based on morphological differences and molecular divergence. Morphologically, the new species, Gracixalus ziegleri sp. nov., is distinguishable from its congeners on the basis of a combination of the following diagnostic characters: (1) size small (SVL 28.1 – 30.5 mm); (2) head slightly wider than long; (3) vomerine teeth absent; (4) upper eyelid and dorsum without spine; (5) supratympanic fold distinct; (6) skin of dorsal and lateral surface of head, body and limbs rough, sparsely scattered with tubercles; (7) ventral skin granular; (8) tibiotarsal projection absent; (9) toes with moderately developed webbing, formula I1 – 11/2 II1 – 2III1 – 2IV2 – 1V; (10) dorsal surface of head and body brown to beige above, with an inverse Y-shaped dark brown marking, extending from interorbital region to central region of dorsum; (11) external vocal sac absent in males; (12) males with a nuptial pad on finger I. Phylogeneticially, the new species is a sister taxon of Gracixalus sapaensis and G. tianlinensis with well-supported values. Currently, the new species is known only from the evergreen montane tropical forest of Yen Bai Province at an elevation of ca. 2200 m a.s.l.

Preliminary surveys of brackish and freshwater habitats in the southeast and east of South Korea produced a total of fifteenspecies. Ten of these species are new records for Korea, and one additional species, belonging to the genus Tanycypris, isnewly described herein. Twenty-seven species of nonmarine ostracods are now reported from Korea, but this is probablyonly a small proportion of the actual number of species inhabiting the peninsula. The presence of Dolerocypris ikeyaiSmith & Kamiya, 2006, Cryptocandona brehmi (Klie, 1934), Cryptocandona tsukagoshii Smith, 2011, Physocypria nip-ponica Okubo, 1990 and Vestalenula cylindrica (Straub, 1952) on the Korean Peninsula demonstrates that these species are also distributed on the continent, and are not endemic to Japan.

A new species of the genus Poecilia Bloch & Schneider, 1801 is recorded from El Salvador. Morphological and meristic data of P. marcellinoi n. sp. and of the sympatric P. salvatoris Regan, 1907 are analysed. Intra- and interspecific variation are compared and correlated with environmental and interspecific influences. A high degree of character displacement is observed in populations from stable freshwater habitats. In habitats with presumed marine influences, this character displacement is counteracted by ecological stress. Based on the evidence presented, subspecific separation of observed ecotypes from literature is rejected.

Brachodidae are a small family of fewer than 140 described species that are distributed worldwide except in North America. They reach their greatest diversity in the tropical regions of Asia and South America; however, many species occur in the Palaearctic region and in Australia, but these are restricted to a small number of genera. More than 40 species are known from the Oriental region and many more await description (Kallies 1998, 2000, 2004).

A new species, Pleurotheciella nilotica is described and illustrated from the River Nile, Sohag, Egypt. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the combined SSU and LSU rDNA placed the new species within Pleurotheciella as a phylogenetically distinct species. P. nilotica formed a basal clade to a node containing P. krabiensis and P.tropica. The new species is characterized by its conidial dimensions being smaller than those recorded in the eleven described species of Pleurotheciella.

Abstract The herbivorous amphipod Sunamphitoe robertan. sp. is described from the canopy of kelp beds in False Bay, South Africa. The new species has unusual habits, small family groups burrowing directly into the margins of the swollen primary fronds of the kelp Ecklonia maxima (Osbeck) Papenfuss, 1940. Morphologically, the new species is best distinguished from other species of Sunamphitoe by strong rows of dorsal spines on the outer rami of uropods 1 and 2. These spine rows appear to be employed as ‘drill-bits’ to excavate kelp tissue and create the burrows. Damage to hosts does not appear to be fatal, but requires further investigation.

Penstemon dugesii is described from the central region of the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. This species belongs to Penstemon subg. Penstemon sect. Fasciculus. Here, we describe this new species and compare it with P. coriaceus, to which it is morphologically most similar. We also propose its conservation status and provide a distribution map of both species.

Protapioceridae, which belongs to the superfamily Asiloidea, is an extinct endemic family in China. Until now, only one genus and two species were known from Liaoning Province of Palaearctic China. In the present paper a third species of the small family is reported. A key to the species is presented.
