Review of the Indo-West Pacific genus Inimicus (Synanceiidae: Choridactylinae)

The stinger genus Inimicus Jordan & Starks, 1904 (family Synanceiidae), distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, is characterized by having two free pectoral-fin rays. Examination of the original descriptions and 420 specimens, including all available type specimens, of the genus resulted in the recognition of nine valid species: Inimicus brachyrhynchus (Bleeker, 1874) (recorded from Hong Kong and Singapore), I. caledonicus (Sauvage, 1878) (distributed in Andaman Sea and western Pacific Ocean), I. cuvieri (Gray, 1835) (Andaman Sea and western Pacific Ocean), I. didactylus (Pallas, 1769) (western Pacific), I. filamentosus (Cuvier, 1829) (western Indian Ocean), I. gruzovi Mandrytsa, 1991 (Coral Sea), I. japonicus (Cuvier, 1829) (East Asia), I. sinensis (Valenciennes, 1833) (eastern Indian and western Pacific oceans), and I. smirnovi Mandrytsa, 1990 (southwestern Pacific Ocean). Inimicus joubini (Chevey, 1927), previously considered a valid species, is herein regarded as a junior synonym of I. japonicus. Another 10 nominal species are confirmed to be synonymized with the nine species. A revised diagnosis for each species and a key to all the species are provided.

The tridentigerine genus Pseudogobius is widespread, from temperate to tropical areas of the Indo-west Pacific. A morphological review of the genus was carried out, with the initial focus on South-east Asian and Australian species. There are about 21 nominal species in the genus; however, the type specimens for some nominal species are missing. Our work recognises 15 valid species so far, including seven new species, which are described herein: P. aquilonius n. sp., P. cinctus n. sp., P. eos n. sp., P. hoesei n. sp., P. jeffi n. sp., P. rhizophora n. sp. and P. verticalis n. sp. We also conclude that P. poicilosoma (Bleeker, 1849) is the senior synonym of P. javanicus (Bleeker, 1856). Pseudogobius poicilosoma, P. gastrospilos (Bleeker, 1853) and P. javanicus are accepted here as conspecific, although the types are in poor condition (note that all three names were given to specimens collected within close proximity to each other in coastal Java, Indonesia). A key to valid species is presented. The revision benefited from an adaptive feedback loop with companion genetic analyses, with the most comprehensive data available for the Australian region. Broader preliminary genetic data suggest the potential for recognition of additional cryptic species, with the current study providing a platform for future systematic work. Pseudogobius are a prominent part of estuarine biodiversity in the Indo-west Pacific, and this study helps to highlight the need to better understand the taxonomy and conservation requirements of cryptobenthic fishes.

Two new species of marine nematodes, Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. in the deep-sea sediments from the Philippine Sea in the tropical Western Pacific Ocean with the water depth of 3920–5176 m and P. eurystoma sp. n. in the shelf seafloor from the East China Sea with the water depth of 55–64 m, are described. Both species possess long and slender spicules, which are present only in the congener P. barbula, a species discovered from the continental slope of New Zealand. Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. can be easily distinguished from P. barbula by the relatively broader buccal cavity, the unequally long cervical setae and a higher number of terminal setae. Paramphimonhystrella eurystoma sp. n. is unique in having a peculiar gubernaculum with two proximal capitula and a peculiar hammer-shaped cuticularized piece posterior to vulva, by which it can be distinguished from P. longispicula sp. n. and P. barbula as well as other congeners. Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. differs from P. eurystoma sp. n. also by the number of terminal setae (4 vs. 2). A dichotomous key to nine valid species of Paramphimonhystrella is provided.

The hydrozoan genus Zyzzyzus is revised based on reexaminations of all available type specimens and on additional material. The taxon includes four valid species: Zyzzyzus spongicolus (von Lendenfeld, 1884), from the eastern Indian and southwest Pacific oceans; the type species, Z. warreni Calder, 1988, from the Atlantic, western Indian, and western Pacific oceans; and Z. floridanus Petersen, 1990 and Z. robustus Petersen, 1990, both from the northwest Atlantic. Although type specimens of Z. calderi Petersen, 1990 could not be located, it has been assigned here to the synonymy of Z. warreni because of similarities between the two in nematocyst dimensions, in number and structure of endodermal canals, and in external morphology of the hydrocaulus and hydrorhiza. A sixth nominal species (Corymorpha iyoensis Yamada, 1958) has on one occasion been assigned to the genus, but detailed studies of the type material are needed to resolve its taxonomic affinities.

Abstract. Here we present results of the first comprehensive study of sulphur compounds and methane in the oligotrophic tropical West Pacific Ocean. The concentrations of dimethylsuphide (DMS), dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP), dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO), and methane (CH4), as well as various phytoplankton marker pigments in the surface ocean were measured along a north-south transit from Japan to Australia in October 2009. DMS (0.9 nmol l−1), dissolved DMSP (DMSPd, 1.6 nmol l−1) and particulate DMSP (DMSPp, 2 nmol l−1) concentrations were generally low, while dissolved DMSO (DMSOd, 4.4 nmol l−1) and particulate DMSO (DMSOp, 11.5 nmol l−1) concentrations were comparably enhanced. Positive correlations were found between DMSO and DMSP as well as DMSP and DMSO with chlorophyll a, which suggests a similar source for both compounds. Similar phytoplankton groups were identified as being important for the DMSO and DMSP pool, thus, the same algae taxa might produce both DMSP and DMSO. In contrast, phytoplankton seemed to play only a minor role for the DMS distribution in the western Pacific Ocean. The observed DMSPp : DMSOp ratios were very low and seem to be characteristic of oligotrophic tropical waters representing the extreme endpoint of the global DMSPp : DMSOp ratio vs. SST relationship. It is most likely that nutrient limitation and oxidative stress in the tropical West Pacific Ocean triggered enhanced DMSO production leading to an accumulation of DMSO in the sea surface. Positive correlations between DMSPd and CH4, as well as between DMSO (particulate and total) and CH4, were found along the transit. We conclude that both DMSP and DMSO serve as substrates for methanogenic bacteria in the western Pacific Ocean.
