Description of three new species of Bopyrissa Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1931 (Epicaridea: Bopyridae) from Oceania with a key to species in the genus

Three new species in the parasitic isopod genus Bopyrissa Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1931, recorded from Kiribati, the Mariana Islands and French Polynesia, are described. These three species, B. distorta sp. nov., B. guamensis sp. nov. and B. oceania sp. nov., are the first species of the genus recorded from Oceania, occurring on three different hermit crab host species of genus Calcinus. The diversity of the genus is therefore increased to ten species. Bopyrissa distorta sp. nov. can be distinguished from congeners by the markedly distorted sinistral body of females and fused pleon of males. Bopyrissa guamensis sp. nov. differs from other dextral species of Bopyrissa in having a strikingly tuberculated edge to the pleomeres of females. Bopyrissa oceania sp. nov. differs from related species in that females possess eyes and that the barbula has smooth falcate projections on each side. A key to the ten species of Bopyrissa is presented, together with a tabular summary of their known geographic and host ranges.

Three new species of the bopyrid genus Scyracepon Tattersall, 1905 are described from crabs collected on Pacific Islands: Scyracepon polynesiensis n. sp. from the Society Islands, S. pseudoliomerae n. sp. from the Mariana Islands, and S. biglobosus n. sp. from the Line Islands. The first two were found infesting Xanthias lamarckii and Pseudoliomera sp. (Xanthidae), a new host family for species of Scyracepon, and the last was found parasitizing Schizophrys aspera (Majidae). Scyracepon now includes 11 species, all but one known from single collections, infesting 12 host species in 9 brachyuran families. The discovery of three new species, each rare, suggests that crab parasites are undersampled, and further suggests that the low relative diversity of bopyrids known from brachyurans may partly reflect this undersampling. Keys to all species of Scyracepon and to all 31 genera of Keponinae are provided.

Three new species of the parasitic isopod subfamily Hemiarthrinae Markham, 1972 are described. Allodiplophryxus unilateralis n. sp. is described from Western Australia, infesting the palaemonid shrimp Jocaste lucina (Nobili, 1901), and females differ from the only other species in the genus in possessing six pleomeres, an asymmetrical first oostegite and pleopods restricted to the short side of the body. Loki athanus n. sp. is described from Madagascar, infesting the alpheid shrimp Athanas parvus de Man, 1910, and females differ from the only other species in the genus in possessing well-developed lateral plates on pleomere 4 and four pairs of uniramous pleopods. Hemiarthrus alphei n. sp. is described from French Polynesia, infesting the alpheid shrimp Alpheus crinitus Dana, 1852, and females differ from the four other known Hemiarthrus species in having pleomeres with well-developed, symmetrical lateral plates, a barbula with three pairs of projections and a pointed pleotelson. Keys to species of Hemiarthrus and all genera of the Hemiarthrinae are presented.

Three new species of the alpheid shrimp genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955 are described from shallow waters of Guam (Mariana Islands), Moorea (Society Islands, French Polynesia), and Panglao (Bohol, the Philippines). The description of Salmoneus paulayi n. sp. is based on three specimens collected on reef flats in the vicinity of Guam’s Apra Harbor, Talofofo, and Mangilao. Salmoneus komaii n. sp. is described on the basis of a single specimen collected at Barracuda Rock, one of Guam’s popular diving sites. Finally, Salmoneus poupini n. sp. is described based on eight type specimens from several sites in the Moorea lagoon and one additional specimen from Panglao. The three new species appear to be closely related to each other, sharing several features on the minor and major chelipeds, the most obvious being the presence of widely spaced teeth on the finger cutting edges of the major chela. In addition, S. paulayi n. sp. is characterised by the presence of rounded, finely striated convexities intercalated between the teeth on the fingers of the major chela; these convexities are present, but much less developed in S. komaii n. sp. and S. poupini n. sp. The closest relative of these three new species appears to be S. sketi Fransen, 1991 from the eastern Atlantic, the only other species of the genus with widely spaced teeth (instead of serrations) on the cutting edges of the major chela.

AbstractThis paper treats the Chinese species of Euplectromorpha Girault. Nine valid species are recognized and a key to species is provided. Five species were previously known from China: E. breviealcar (Lin), E. clavata (Lin), E. contingens (Lin), E. interrupta (Lin), and E. simplicicornis (Lin). E. inaequalis (Lin) is proposed as a new synonym of E. brevicalcar. One species is newly recorded from China: E. bicarinata (Ferrière). Three new species, E. conjuncta, E. triangularis, and E. acuticlavata, are described and compared with related species. One new combination is proposed, Aroplectrus areolatus (Ferrière), transferred from Neoplectrus.

The genus Concavetettix Deng, gen. nov. (type species: Concavetettix yunnanensis Deng, sp. nov.) is described from Daweishan, Pingbian County, Yunnan Province, China. The genus Macromotettix Günther, 1939 is reviewed. Three new species of the genus, M. microptera Deng, sp. nov., M. zhengi Deng, sp. nov. and M. brachyptera Deng, sp. nov. are described with detailed illustrations of external morphology. One new name is proposed: Macromotettix napoensis Deng, nom. nov.. Additionally, an updated key to species of the genus Macromotettix is given.

The Brazilian species of Bittacus Latreille (Mecoptera: Bittacidae) are reviewed and one new synonym is proposed (Thyridates willmanni Collucci & Amorin syn. n. of Bittacus diversinervis Souza Lopes & Mangabeira). Three new species are herein described: Bittacus cruzi sp. n. from Amazonas, Presidente Figueiredo and Manaus, B. ferreirai sp. n. from Bahia, Aracatu and B. varzeanus sp. n. from Amazonas, Tefé, bringing the current number of Bittacus species in Brazil to 18. Illustrations, comments, and distribution maps of each species are presented. An identification key to the Brazilian genera of Mecoptera and Bittacus species is also presented.

New data on the jumping-spider genus Arnoliseus are presented. Three new species from the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro state are described, based on both sexes: Arnoliseus cariocasp. nov. from the city of Rio de Janeiro, and Arnoliseus hastatussp. nov. and Arnoliseus falcatussp. nov. from the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu. The genus’ genital morphology is discussed in detail and new English terminology for their structures is created. An identification key for all Arnoliseus species is given.

Based on light and scanning electron microscopical studies of nematode specimens from the digestive tract of some rarely collected anguilliform and perciform fishes off New Caledonia, three new species of Cucullanus Müller, 1777 (Cucullanidae) are described: C. austropacificus n. sp. from the longfin African conger Conger cinereus (Congridae), C. gymnothoracis n. sp. from the lipspot moray Gymnothorax chilospilus (Muraenidae), and C. incognitus n. sp. from the seabream Dentex fourmanoiri (Sparidae). Cucullanus austropacificus n. sp. is characterized by the presence of cervical alae, ventral sucker, alate spicules 1.30–1.65 mm long, conspicuous outgrowths of the anterior and posterior cloacal lips and by elongate-oval eggs measuring 89–108 × 48–57 μm; C. gymnothoracis n. sp. is similar to the foregoing species, but differs from it in the absence of cervical alae and the posterior cloacal outgrowth, in the shape and size of the anterior cloacal outgrowth and somewhat shorter spicules 1.12 mm long; C. incognitus n. sp. (based on female morphology) differs from other congeneric species parasitic in the Sparidae mainly in possessing cervical alae, the postequatorial vulva, phasmids situated at the mid-length of the tail and in the size of the eggs (75–84 × 45–66 μm). A key to species of Cucullanus parasitizing anguilliform fishes is provided.

The Syrphidae genus Domodon Reemer, 2013 so far included two species, D. zodiacus Reemer, 2013 and D. peperpotensis Reemer, 2014, both recorded only from Suriname. Additional specimens belonging to this genus have been collected in many other localities in South and Central America. In this paper, the genus is revised and three new species are described: D. caxiuana sp. nov. (northern South America), D. inaculeatus sp. nov. (northern South America), and D. sensibilis sp. nov. (Costa Rica). The distribution of D. peperpotensis is extended to include French Guiana. Photographs of the type material of the new species and illustrations of male genitalia of all species are provided, as well as a key to species.
