Lobithelphusa mexicana Rodriguez, 1982 (Decapoda: Pseudothelphusidae): a reassessment of key characters and systematics

Lobithelphusa Rodriguez, 1982 is endemic to southern Mexico. Assigned to this monotypic genus is the freshwater pseudothelphusid crab, L. mexicana Rodriguez, 1982. The original description based on an old, dry, male specimen in the collections of the Natural History Museum, London, is brief and the crab was only partially figured. Lobithelphusa mexicana has subsequently never been recorded from Mexico and, consequently, the conservation status of this species is unknown. The type specimen has a complete, but detached left chela; is devoid of the left ambulatory pereiopods 1–3, with the fourth missing the carpus, propodus and dactylus; and its left first gonopod detached but retained in a glass tube kept adjacent to the crab. In spite of this damage the crab is still in remarkably good condition for a specimen registered in 1860. The purpose of this study is to apply computed tomography (CT) scanning techniques on the extant type, including its first gonopod, in order to provide detailed illustrations of the crab. These, in turn, shall be used to re-describe the species in order to help establish the current distribution status of L. mexicana in Mexico, and clarify its systematic position within the Pseudothelphusidae Ortmann, 1893.

During a taxonomic study on Croton sect. Geiseleria from Brazil, 40 specimens were found from the southern portion of the Brazilian Amazon that correspond to C. hadrianii, a species hitherto known only from its original description and with the type locality within Brazil unknown. We present an amended description of C. hadrianii providing the first information on fully developed fruits and seeds, which previously undocumented, morphological characterization, as well as comments on its geographical range, including a distribution map, conservation status, and period of flowering and fruiting. The species is also illustrated and photographs in its habitat for the first time. Typification is also presented and the species systematic position within Croton sect. Geiseleria is discussed. Additionally, we provide a key to the 16 species of Croton sect. Geiseleria occurring in the Brazilian Amazon, as well as field images for most of them.

In the Malesian faunal region the Naucoridae or creeping water bugs comprise 79 described species, which have been mostly subject to recent reviews and revisions (see checklist and references in Chen et al. 2005; and Zettel 2007, Polhemus & Polhemus 2008, Polhemus et al. 2008, Sites & Suputa 2008, Sites & Vitheepradit 2011). However, an exception, Naucoris sumatranus remained untreated for 160 years, since its short original description by Fieber in 1851. To fill this gap the type specimen in the Natural History Museum Vienna is redescribed and the species identity is discussed.

The taxonomic status of Amietia vertebralis and Strongylopus hymenopus, two frogs restricted to the Maluti-Drakensberg highlands in southern Africa, is unclear. Here, morphological examination and phylogenetic analyses elucidate the systematic position of these two species. Type specimens of both species were examined and compared with more recent collections to clarify their identity. These comparisons revealed discrepancies between the original application of these names and their current usage. The holotype and original description of A. vertebralis match specimens from an extant population at that species’ type locality that are currently assigned to S. hymenopus. Furthermore, the type specimen of S. hymenopus is of uncertain provenance and does not match well with either of the forms currently associated with these names. We assessed both intraspecific and interspecific variability using DNA sequence data. Broad sampling of the form currently assigned to A. vertebralis revealed very little genetic variation thereby dispelling the hypothesis that this is a compound taxon. The generic placement of both species within the family Pyxicephalidae was resolved using a combined dataset of mitochondrial 16S rDNA and nuclear RAG1 gene sequences. The form currently recognised as S. hymenopus was excluded from the otherwise monophyletic genus Strongylopus, and was placed instead within Amietia. Based on these data a revised application of both species names is recommended here. Populations currently assigned to Amietia vertebralis are referred to Amietia umbraculata and those attributed to Strongylopus hymenopus are referred instead to Amietia vertebralis.

Eight species of mesoplodont whales (genus Mesoplodon Gervais, 1850) named during the nineteenth century are based on valid descriptions. A checklist with the original description and type material for each of these species is provided. Additional data given may include type locality and illustrative sources, type material holding institution and type registration number(s). The only type specimen for which a record of external morphology was published relates to the 1803 stranding of Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens).

The bethylid genus Foenobethylus Kieffer, 1913, unstudied for almost a century, is redescribed and assigned to the subfamily Pristocerinae based on a preliminary phylogenetic assessment. Four new species: F. bidentatus n. sp. (Brunei), F. elongatus n. sp. (Malaysia), F. emiliacasellae n. sp. (Thailand), and F. thomascokeri n. sp. (Malaysia) are described, based on males only, as females remain unrecognised in this genus. All specimens are deposited in the Department of Entomology, the Natural History Museum, London, U.K. The type species F. gracilis Kieffer (Philippines), although unrepresented by any traceable specimen, can be distinguished from these species based on the original description. A key to the five known species of Foenobethylus is provided.

Extensive field surveys of the Critically Endangered Central and Eastern Rûens Shale Renosterveld have uncovered that Notobubon striatum, as currently circumscribed, comprises two distinct species. Upon careful examination of the type material it has become clear that names exist for both species. The type specimen of N. striatum clearly matches the lesser known species, a large shrub, ca. 1 m. tall, with a powerful anise-scent and which is restricted to the banks of seasonal rivers and watercourses in the Central and Eastern Rûens Shale Renosterveld. The second and better known entity, with a wider distribution, corresponds to the type material of Dregea collina Ecklon & Zeyher. As such, a new combination, Notobubon collinum (Ecklon & Zeyher) Magee, is here made to accommodate this taxon, restricted to dry quartz and silcrete patches or outcrops in Eastern Rûens Shale Renosterveld. In their revised circumscriptions N. striatum and N. collinum are readily distinguished by habit, scent, leaf size and division, as well as leaf lobe shape and sepal size. Comprehensive descriptions of both species are provided, together with notes on their ecology and conservation status, and the existing key to the species of Notobubon updated. This brings the number of recognised species in the genus to thirteen.

A synopsis of the genus Cnidoscolus is presented for the midwestern region of Brazil, which resulted from the analysis of about 1,200 specimens from 62 national and foreign herbaria, including type collections. Observations of populations in field were also made. Nine species are recognized, one of which, C. mcvaughii, is new to science. It is described and illustrated, and comments about its geographic distribution, morphological relationships, systematic position, phenology, and conservation status are provided, as well as images and a map. The other species are contrasted by a dichotomous key. Also, distributional information, maps, conservation evaluations, images and morphologically diagnoses are included. Eight synonymizations, one lectotypification, a neotypifcation, and the re-establishment of C. neglectus are proposed.

Avicularia diversipes (C. L. Koch 1842) known previously only from its original description is redescribed along with Avicularia sooretama sp. nov. and Avicularia gamba sp. nov. The three species are endemic to Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. With other Avicularia species, they share a procurved anterior eye row, slender embolus and medially folded spermathecae, whereas they have unusual characters, such as a very long and spiraled embolus (A. diversipes) and spermathecae with multilobular apex (A. sooretama sp. nov.). Furthermore, the three species lack a tibial apophysis in males and share a distinctive color pattern ontogeny that is not known in any other Avicularia species. The conservation status of the three species is discussed, especially with respect to endemism, illegal trafficking and habitat destruction. The creation of protected areas in southern State of Bahia, Brazil, is recommended, as well as the inclusion of these species in IUCN and CITES lists. Appendices with figures and species information are presented to facilitate correct specimen identification by custom officers, in order to limit illegal traffic.

The European species of Calymmochilus Masi (Hymenoptera, Eupelmidae) are revised. Calymmochilus atratus Masi stat. rev. is removed from synonymy under C. subnubilus (Walker) and treated as a valid species. A lectotype is designated for Calymmochilus atratus. The single extant type specimen of Eupelmus subnubilus Walker is considered as lectotype. Calymmochilus bini Fusu sp. n. is described from a single female collected in Sardinia. A female of Calymmochilus russoi Gibson is reported from Spain as a parasitoid in galls of Parapodia sinaica (Frauenfeld) (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) on Tamarix (Tamaricaceae), a new national and host record. The species is redescribed and illustrated, this being the first record of the species after its original description. An illustrated key to females and, when known, males of the now six recognized European species of Calymmochilus is given and available biological and distributional data are reviewed.

Two species of the genus Sphenocarcinus A. Milne Edwards 1876, with a single rostrum exist in the Indo-Pacific and they are principally only known by their original description: S. cuneus (Wood-Mason 1891) and S. aurorae Alcock 1899. Each species is herewith redescribed, based on the examination of the types. Two new species are established. S. difficilis sp. nov., represented by numerous specimens from Madagascar (ORSTOM collection), proved to be an intermediate species between S. cuneus and S. aurorae. S. pinocchio sp. nov., (collected in the Makassar Strait, Indonesia (mission Corindon II), is characterized by its very Jong and strongly curved rostrum. One male specimen, also collected in the Makassar Strait, probably modified by a sacculinid parasite, and with a more curved, snub rostrum, can be regarded as an unusual form of S. pinocchio sp. nov. A key of the four Indo-Pacific Sphenocarcinus with a single rostrum is presented.
