The cross-anisotropic nature of soil strength has been studied and documented for decades, including the increased propensity for cross-anisotropy in layered materials. However, current engineering practice for tailings storage facilities (TSFs) does not appear to generally include cross-anisotropy considerations in the development of shear strengths. This being despite the very common layering profile seen in subaerially-deposited tailings. To provide additional data to highlight the strength cross-anisotropy of tailings, high quality block samples from three TSFs were obtained and trimmed to enable Hollow Cylinder Torsional Shear tests to be sheared at principal stress angles of 0 and 45 degrees during undrained shearing. Consolidation procedures were carried out such that the drained rotation of principal stress angle that would precede potential undrained shear events for below-slope tailings was reasonably simulated. The results indicated the significant effects of cross-anisotropy on the undrained strength, instability stress ratio, contractive tendency and brittleness of each of the three tailings types. The magnitude of cross-anisotropy effects seen was generally consistent with previous published data on sands.

In this article, an employee perspective has been applied in aiming to explore how organizations face challenges and take responsibility for industrial digitalization, thus extending the research on the human-centric perspective in relation to Industry 4.0 technologies. To give emphasis to the human-centric perspective, the co-workership wheel was applied to identify and analyze data. The findings of an explorative longitudinal qualitative case study consisting of 35 in-depth interviews with informants from a manufacturing company were used. Additional data collection consisted of documents and project meetings. By applying a human-centric perspective, llessons learned from this case study show that taking responsibility for industrial digitalization is challenging and the importance of an adaptive organizational culture and a focus on learning and competence are crucial. We argue that the findings give useful implications for manufacturing organizations navigating the challenges of industrial digitalization to sense and seize the benefits of Industry 4.0 technologies.

This article describes a novel approach for toponym resolution with deep neural networks. The proposed approach does not involve matching references in the text against entries in a gazetteer, instead directly predicting geo-spatial coordinates. Multiple inputs are considered in the neural network architecture (e.g., the surrounding words are considered in combination with the toponym to disambiguate), using pre-trained contextual word embeddings (i.e., ELMo or BERT) as well as bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory units, which are both regularly used for modeling textual data. The intermediate representations are then used to predict a probability distribution over possible geo-spatial regions, and finally to predict the coordinates for the input toponym. The proposed model was tested on three datasets used on previous toponym resolution studies, specifically the (i) War of the Rebellion, (ii) Local–Global Lexicon, and (iii) SpatialML corpora. Moreover, we evaluated the effect of using (i) geophysical terrain properties as external information, including information on elevation or terrain development, among others, and (ii) additional data collected from Wikipedia articles, to further help with the training of the model. The obtained results show improvements using the proposed method, when compared to previous approaches, and specifically when BERT embeddings and additional data are involved.

Abstract The objective of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is to achieve good ecological status in surface waters by 2027. To make a proper evaluation of the ecological status of watercourses, it is necessary to harmonize class boundaries for chemical and biological quality elements (BQEs). This paper aims to explore the linkages between physicochemical parameters and BQEs and set river nutrient threshold concentrations that support good ecological status. Regression and mismatch methods were applied to find the relationship between phytoplankton (PP) and phytobenthos (PB) environmental quality ratio and mean total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations. Nutrient thresholds have been suggested for several water types, which are varied in the case of highland rivers 1.8–6.2 mg TN/l, 180–400 μg TP/l; in the case of lowland rivers 1.4–5.0 mg TN/l, and 100–350 μg TP/l. These values are similar to what other studies found, but the relationship between biology and nutrients was weaker. Besides nutrients, additional data of measured dissolved organic carbon, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand with potassium permanganate method, and information about hydromorphological features were involved in the analysis. The research demonstrates that random forest can be used as a nonlinear, multiparametric model for predicting biological class from five variables with 35–81% error for PP and with 18–47% error for PB.

The species Sigara (Subsigara) oxiana Jansson, 1983 (Corixidae) is recorded for the first time from Kazakhstan. New data on the distribution of two species, which are rare in Kazakhstan, Sigara (Subsigara) fossarum (Leach, 1817) and Hebrus (Hebrus) pilipes Kanyukova, 1997 (Hebridae) are also provided. Additional data on sampling localities of Callicorixa producta producta (Reuter, 1880), Corixa affinis Leach, 1817 and Corixa punctata (Illiger, 1807) in Kazakhstan are reported. Additions to the bibliography on aquatic and semiaquatic heteropterans of the Kazakh fauna are given.

Depression is a multifactorial disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, and none of the currently available therapeutics can completely cure it. Thus, there is a need for developing novel, potent, and safer agents. Recent medicinal chemistry findings on the structure and function of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor facilitated design and discovery of novel compounds with antidepressant action. Eligible papers highlighting the importance of 5-HT2A receptors in the pathomechanism of the disorder were identified in the content-screening performed on the popular databases (PubMed, Google Scholar). Articles were critically assessed based on their titles and abstracts. The most accurate papers were chosen to be read and presented in the manuscript. The review summarizes current knowledge on the applicability of 5-HT2A receptor signaling modulators in the treatment of depression. It provides an insight into the structural and physiological features of this receptor. Moreover, it presents an overview of recently conducted virtual screening campaigns aiming to identify novel, potent 5-HT2A receptor ligands and additional data on currently synthesized ligands acting through this protein.

Reference [1] presented a skewed perspective of the M-FAST literature base and provided the flawed conclusion that the M-FAST should no longer be used in practice. In an attempt to correct the many issues with [1], this article provides a narrative review of the strengths and weaknesses of research findings for the M-FAST interpretation as well as reviews methodological concepts underlying feigning research. The M-FAST was designed to screen for potential feigning of psychiatric symptoms. It was not designed to conclude that an examinee is feigning or malingering psychiatric symptoms. A positive result on the M-FAST only indicates that additional data needs to be collected to make the aforementioned conclusions. Applying the M-FAST in any other way is a serious error on the part of the user. The research literature thus far generally supports the use of the M-FAST cut-off as a screening measure for possible feigning of psychiatric symptoms. However, there are scenarios when the M-FAST may not operate as efficiently, and these scenarios are discussed. Reference [1] misrepresented the purpose of the M-FAST as well as research findings on the M-FAST. Therefore, [1] should be read with great caution.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is highly prevalent in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with worse cardiovascular and kidney outcomes. Limited data exist on use of AF pharmacotherapies and AF-related procedures by CKD status. We examined a large "real-world" contemporary population of incident AF to study the association of CKD with management of AF. Methods: We identified patients with newly diagnosed AF between 2010-2017 from two large, integrated healthcare delivery systems. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (≥60, 45-59, 30-44, 15-29, <15 ml/min/1.73 m2) was calculated from a minimum of two ambulatory serum creatinine measures separated by ≥90 days. AF medications and procedures were identified from electronic health records. We performed multivariable Fine-Gray subdistribution hazards regression to test the association of CKD severity with receipt of targeted AF therapies. Results: Among 115,564 incident AF patients, 34% had baseline CKD. In multivariable models, compared to those with eGFR>60 ml/min/1.73 m2, patients with eGFR 30-44 (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.91, 95%CI:0.99-0.93), 15-29 (aHR 0.78, 95%CI:0.75-0.82) and <15 ml/min/1.73 m2 (HR 0.64, 95%CI:0.58-0.70) had lower use of any AF therapy. Patients with eGFR 15-29 ml/min/1.73 m2 had lower adjusted use of rate control agents (aHR 0.61, 95%CI:0.56-0.67), warfarin (aHR 0.89, 95%CI:0.84-0.94) and DOACs (aHR 0.23, 95% CI:0.19-0.27) compared to patients with eGFR>60 ml/min/1.73 m2. These associations were even stronger for eGFR <15 ml/min/1.73 m2. There was also a graded association between CKD severity and receipt of AF-related procedures (vs. eGFR>60 ml/min/1.73 m2): eGFR 30-44 ml/min/1.73 (aHR 0.78, 95%CI:0.70-0.87), eGFR 15-29 ml/min/1.73 m2 (aHR 0.73, 95%CI:0.61-0.88) and eGFR<15 ml/min/1.73 m2 (aHR 0.48, 95%CI:0.31-0.74). Conclusions: In adults with newly diagnosed AF, CKD severity was associated with lower receipt of rate control agents, anticoagulation and AF procedures. Additional data on efficacy and safety of AF therapies in CKD populations are needed to inform management strategies.

In this paper, a theoretical model based on multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP) approach has been applied to predict the structural and magnetic properties in nanocrystalline Fe–Ni powders prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) using a planetary ball mill. The MGGP model was used to correlate the input parameters (milling speed, chemical composition, and milling time), to output parameters (crystallite size and coercivity) of nanocrystalline Fe–Ni powders. The model obtained was tested with additional data to demonstrate its performance and prediction ability. The MGGP model is a robust and efficient method to find an accurate mathematical relationship between input and output data. A sensitivity analysis study was applied to determine the most influential milling parameters on the crystallite size and coercivity.
