Colour in China has a long history of artistic, symbolic, religious, and mythological use. This paper takes the idea of colour as a meaningful element within Chinese society and introduces the use of visual colour grammar as a new way to identify and breakdown the use of colour within political art and propaganda posters. The use of colour has been adapted by visual linguists into its own unique visual grammar component, relaying much more information than just a symbolic transfer from sign to signifier. Meaning within political posters can be derived from regularities in use, presentation, and conventional meanings. Colour as a visual grammar component is expressed through the three metafunctions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual. This paper explores how the Chinese views on colour interconnects with the metafunctions of colour to look at the political posters of the PRC. I will discuss both the approach to art as a text that can be ‘read’ through visual grammar and present colour in the Chinese context as more than a symbol making device but as a meaning component in and of itself.

The procedure involves extraction of the copper by refluxing the milk powder with a solution of potassium thiocyanate in 95% acetone and determining the copper content of the extract by colorimetry with dihydroxyethyldithiocarbamic acid, after removing carotenoid pigments. The results agree with those obtained by the wet-digestion method but are higher than those yielded by dry-ashing. The advantages of the extraction method are (a) simplicity, (b) low copper content of the "blank", which, with proper precautions, may be negligible, and (c) a large enough sample can be used to permit visual colour comparison with standard solutions of Alizarin Yellow G.

Mating behaviour and predation avoidance in Heliconius involve visual colour signals; however, there is considerable inter-individual phenotypic variation in the appearance of colours. In particular, the red pigment varies from bright crimson to faded red. It has been thought that this variation is primarily due to pigment fading with age, although this has not been explicitly tested. Previous studies have shown the importance of red patterns in mate choice and that birds and butterflies might perceive these small colour differences. Using digital photography and calibrated colour images, we investigated whether the hue variation in the forewing dorsal red band of Heliconius melpomene rosina corresponds with age. We found that the red hue and age were highly associated, suggesting that red colour can indeed be used as a proxy for age in the study of wild-caught butterflies.

Abstract. Eight-hundred and forty-five veal carcasses (535 males and 310 females) from Pirenaica breed and its crosses with Charolais and Limousin were used to compare carcass colour visual assessments 60 min post-mortem with the values obtained using a spectrocolorimeter (CIE Lab colour system) on the pectoralis superficialis muscle. Carcass weights ranged between 240 and 360 kg. Visual colour was subjectively evaluated by two trained assessors. The best correlation between visual appraisal and L* was observed in carcasses of 300–320 kg. A relatively strong correlation between visual appraisal and a* values was observed in carcasses of 280–300 kg of weight. However, the correlation between b* and visual appraisal was low. Using discriminant functions that included L* and a*, the spectrocolorimeter classified correctly 60 % of carcasses in the class colour assigned by the assessors. In fact, 99% of male and 96% of female carcasses were correctly assigned in the most common colour of veal carcasses in the Spanish market ('pink', 5). These results indicate that on-line instrumental colour measurements on pectoralis superficialis muscle could be recommended to objectively evaluate carcass colour of commercial veal for the Spanish market.

The potential for improvement of clean wool colour (CWC) in Corriedale sheep via selection was examined. The heritability, and phenotypic and genetic correlations, of CWC, brightness (Y), greasy (GFW) and clean (CFW) fleece weights , yield percentage (Yield), mean fibre diameter (MFD), and visual colour score were estimated from 440 progeny of 19 sires of a Corriedale flock using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedures with average information algorithm (AIREML). The heritability of CWC was estimated at 0.27±0.13. Clean wool colour showed strong positive genetic correlations with CFW and MFD. Visual colour score and CWC were also positively genetically correlated. As expected, direct selection criteria against MFD, CWC, or visual colour score would reduce CWC; however, direct selection against MFD would improve clean wool colour with negligible reductions on CFW, thus resulting in small economic gains. Several selection indices were calculated having either CFW, MFD, and CWC or CFW and MFD as selection criteria. The b-values of an unrestricted index were estimated at I1 = + 1.15 CFW + 0.13 MFD + 0.43 CWC, with positive correlated responses for all 3 breeding objective traits (CFW, MFD, and CWC). A second index, where CFW was restricted to nil genetic change, was estimated at: I2 = + 0.14 CFW − 0.02 MFD + 0.01 CWC. This index was expected to cause a negligible genetic gain for CWC (−0.04 Y–Z units/head.year). To avoid economic losses with the reduction on CFW, a third selection index was calculated where CWC was restricted to nil change. The index was estimated at I3 = +0.61 CFW − 0.07 MFD + 0.02 CWC with expected increases in CFW and decreases in MFD. Selection indices with (a) CFW and MFD (I4) and (b) CFW, MFD, and visual colour score (I5) as selection criteria would increase CFW, MFD, and CWC at the same rates observed in I1.

Purpose Beverage serving affects consumers’ taste and price perceptions. Therefore, the correct selection of the presentation cues is essential when a consumer evaluates a product. This study aims to determine how haptic (weight) and visual (colour) cues of drinking vessels affect the taste and price perception of coffee. Design/methodology/approach The authors created three different experimental designs. Given that coffee is a popular drink among the younger population, the authors invited undergraduate students in the 18–24 age group into this study. The participants tasted the same coffee from cups differ in weight (heavy and normal) and colour (congruent, incongruent and neutral), after which their opinions about the taste and price were recorded. Findings According to the results, increasing the weight of the cup creates a more positive perception of the smell and density of the coffee. Moreover, coffee served in a heavy cup was perceived to be more expensive than in other cups. The authors also found that incongruent cups received a lower score in all evaluations regarding taste perception. In the final experiment, the authors used the weight and colour manipulations together. According to the participants, the most fragrant coffee was perceived from a heavy and congruent cup. Research limitations/implications Small sample is one of the limitations of this study. Future studies could be conducted with bigger and more diverse sample using different kinds of coffee beans. Practical implications It will be appropriate for coffee producers to design the cups in light of the said results. Originality/value The paucity in the existing literature of sensory marketing studies using hot drinks is remarkable, especially takeaway coffee, which is becoming more popular with an increasing number of coffee chains, and needs to be examined in detail.
