Objective Studies of patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) have shown a relationship between high glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and low hemoglobin (Hb) concentration. The present study was conducted to determine the influence of IDA on HbA1c in non-diabetic women. Methods Fifty-nine Saudi women (20 to 50 years old) were enrolled and categorized into groups according to their circulating hemoglobin concentration: Non-IDA (Hb ≥7.45 mmol/L; n = 38) and IDA (Hb ≤7.44 mmol/L; n = 21). The IDA group was further subdivided according to the severity of the IDA, as follows: mild (Hb 6.83 to 7.44 mmol/L; n = 9) and moderate–severe (Hb <6.83 mol/L; n = 12). HbA1c, Hb, ferritin, fasting blood glucose, and red blood cell (RBC) count were measured in each participant. Results HbA1c did not significantly differ between the groups, but the absolute HbA1c level was significantly lower in the mild and moderate–severe anemia groups than the non-anemic group, and was positively associated with Hb, ferritin, and RBC count. In addition, the HbA1c level was inversely associated with the Hb concentration. Conclusions HbA1c is significantly associated with parameters related to IDA in non-diabetic Saudi women. Therefore, assessment of IDA-related parameters is recommended prior to making a diagnosis of diabetes.

Background: The effect of vitamin D replacement on hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in subjects with concurrent deficiencies of vitamin D and iron is not known. Methods: We report on an investigator-initiated, randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled, 12-week interventional trial. Thirty subjects with iron-deficiency anemia (serum ferritin <15 µg/l) were randomized to an intervention arm (cholecalciferol, i.e. vitamin D3, 0.6 million units i.m. once) or placebo. In all subjects, iron deficiency was corrected with parental iron. Other causes of anemia were excluded with appropriate investigation. The primary end point was a rise in Hb concentration. Results: Baseline parameters of age, BMI, hemogram values and levels of serum ferritin, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were similar in the 2 arms. Twelve weeks after vitamin D replacement, there was a significant increase in 25 (OH)D levels (57.7 ± 20.5 vs. 14.1 ± 6.2 ng/ml, p < 0.0001) and a decrease in PTH levels (32.4 ± 16.4 vs. 52.9 ± 18.4 pg/ml, p = 0.003) in subjects in the intervention arm when compared to the placebo arm. However, the increments in serum ferritin and Hb concentration in the intervention and placebo arm did not differ. Conclusion: Vitamin D replacement in subjects with iron-deficiency anemia after iron correction does not improve Hb concentration further.

Abstract Objective Different studies have reported contradictory results regarding the relationship between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and febrile seizure (FS). The present study was conducted to determine the effect of IDA on FS in children. Patients and methods This case-control study was conducted among 52 children with FS (the case group) and 18 children with afebrile seizures and 51 children with fever without seizures in the age range of 6 months to 5 years admitted to the pediatric ward of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ilam from March 2016 to January 2017. Patients were selected using the convenience sampling method. Red blood cell (RBC) count as well as measurement of hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), ferritin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) levels were performed in all patients. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS16 software. Results A total of 34.6% in the FS group, 66.7% in the afebrile seizure group and 41.2% in the fever without seizure group suffered from IDA, which was not statistically significant between the three groups. Hb, Hct and RBC levels were higher in the case group and MCV, MCH, MCHC levels in the case group were lower than those in the control group. The odds ratio (OR) for FS compared to the febrile group was 0.756 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.34–1.68; p = 0.493] and that for FS compared to seizure was 0.265 (95% CI = 0.085–0.823; p = 0.022). Conclusions This study showed that IDA may have protective effects on the onset of FS, and based on the results, IDA is more common in children with afebrile seizures. Further and more comprehensive studies are recommended.

Iron deficiency anemia was identified and characterized in three 14 to 29-month-old male llamas (llama Nos. 1–3) from separate herds in Colorado. The identification of iron deficiency anemia was based on hypoferremia (serum iron = 20–60 μg/dl), erythrocytic features, and hematologic response to iron therapy. The anemia was moderate and nonregenerative and characterized by erythrocyte hypochromia, microcytosis (mean cell volume = 15–18 fl), and decreased mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (36.0–41.0 g/dl). Morphologic features unique to llamas with iron deficiency anemia included irregular distribution of hypochromia within erythrocytes and increased folded cells and dacryocytes. The cause of iron deficiency was not determined. The llamas were treated with various doses and schedules of parenteral iron dextran. Two of the llamas were monitored for up to 14 months after the start of iron therapy and experienced increases in hematocrit and mean cell volume values. In one llama, progressive replacement of microcytic cells with normal cells was visualized on sequential erythrocyte volume distribution histograms following iron therapy.

Iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women is a widespread problem in developing countries including Ethiopia, though its influence on neonatal iron status was inconsistently reported in literature. This cross-sectional study was conducted to compare hematologic profiles and iron status of newborns from mothers with different anemia status and determine correlation between maternal and neonatal hematologic profiles and iron status in Ethiopian context. We included 89 mothers and their respective newborns and performed complete blood count and assessed serum ferritin and C-reactive protein levels from blood samples collected from study participants. Maternal median hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels were 12.2 g/dL and 47.0 ng/mL, respectively. The median hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels for the newborns were 16.2 g/dL and 187.6 ng/mL, respectively. The mothers were classified into two groups based on hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels as iron deficient anemic (IDA) and nonanemic (NA) and newborns of IDA mothers had significantly lower levels of serum ferritin (P=0.017) and hemoglobin concentration (P=0.024). Besides, newborns’ ferritin and hemoglobin levels showed significant correlation with maternal hemoglobin (P=0.018;P=0.039) and ferritin (P=0.000;P=0.008) levels. We concluded that maternal IDA may have an effect on the iron stores of newborns.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a significant problem worldwide particularly in women. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) in in Indian pregnant women with anemia.Method: This was a single centre, prospective, observational, open label, clinical study at real life scenario with 4 weeks follow up. Fifty pregnant women with IDA and visiting to the Radhakrishna multispecialty hospital, Bangalore, for antenatal care were enrolled for the study. IV FCM was given as per the standard protocol. Change in the laboratory parameters such as hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), packed cell volume (PCV) level at baseline and after 4 weeks of completion of parenteral iron therapy was recorded and fatigue score was assessed. The pregnant women were monitored for the adverse events. Results: All pregnant women received a single IV infusion of FCM 1000 mg. A significant increase in the hemoglobin of 2.37±0.51 g/dl (p<0.001) was noted at 4 weeks, MCV rise of 19.89±21.94 (p<0.001) was noted at 4 weeks, MCHC rise was of 2.56±5.65 and PCV rise was of 4.45±2.67 (p<0.011) at over 4 weeks. Significant improvement in fatigue score was observed at 4 weeks after single FCM infusion. No adverse effects were observed in any pregnant woman throughout the duration of the study.Conclusions: This real-life observational study highlights IV FCM is effective in management of IDA in pregnant women and well tolerated. Trial registration number: CTRI/2021/02/030874

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia is one of the major global public health issue causes many serious diseases mostly found in the women and children of developing world. Objective: To evaluate and assess the occurrence and disorder related to iron deficiency in the population of district Dir (Lower). Materials and Methods: From all volunteers blood samples were collected from Vein through syringe and kept it in the EDTA tubes. Hemoglobin concentration was determined by the help of Hematology Analyzer. Following the guidelines of WHO, the value of a hemoglobin (Hb) was <11.5 gm/dl the cut-off for anemia. Data were analyzed by using SPSS. Results: Overall 200 participants were examined of whom n=80 (40%) were anemic which was found higher in age 1-20 years n= 31 (15.5%), farmers n=28 (14%) and house wives n=20 (10%) and malaria patients n=7 (3.5%). While in gender wise study males n=57 (28.5%) were found more anemic than females n=23 (11.5%) P-value (0.95). Conclusions: Awareness and education in public about iron deficiency anemia, its causes and related disorder can prevent anemia of iron deficiency. Knowledge about nutritional requirements and iron deficiency anemia in women can save children and whole family from many diseases like anemia. So knowledge, education and awareness in population especially in women are very necessary.
