The Invention of Public Space: Designing for Inclusion in Lindsay’s New York documents a transformative period of experimentation in public space design in New York City from 1966 through 1973, under the mayoralty of John Lindsay. Combining rich archival research with captivating storytelling, the book sheds light on this time in which emerging ideas about psychology, participation, and politics were integrated into the design of public environments. It makes a compelling argument for the importance of this time and place in spurring a broad rethinking of the very concept of public space as a site of democracy, participation, and self-actualization.

This article examines politics on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City, for evidence of law at the constitutive level. We see legal relations shaping grassroots struggles over public space and housing as forums, claims, and political positions. This view challenges instrumental conceptions of law still prominent in some social-scientific approaches.

This paper is an investigation of the social, economic, legal, and cultural factors underlying the move, in New York City, to regulate the sale of pornographic materials through the promulgation of zoning laws. The campaign to zone out pornography, a point of solidarity around which a number of disparate and often hostile interest groups have rallied in order to reclaim public space in the name of community (as though the term itself were transparent and monovocal) is linked to both gentrification and the socioeconomic dynamics underlying the emergence of what Neil Smith has characterized as the revanchist city. ‘Quality of life’ issues stand euphemistically for the domestication and sanitization of an urban landscape whose perceived unruliness is emblematized not only by the presence of large numbers of homeless people, but also by the outré display of sexually explicit imagery associated with XXX-rated businesses. By focusing on the discursive strategies that seek to identify sex shops with so-called ‘secondary impacts’ such as increased crime and decreasing property values, I aim to uncover the social biases and economic motivations that work to shape the urban landscape. I argue that the move to zone out pornography in New York City is imbricated within larger spatial practices that operate both to maximize the productivity of social space and to reproduce the social values of the majority.

This paper offers an introduction to the planning of a new museum in New York City: The Eyebeam Gallery. The museum will evolve around the making of di- gital art. The ambition of the new museum will be to bring together artists and museum visitors, thus creating a polyphony of voices articulating art forms that are completely new to the world.The architects involved in the project are Diller + Scofidio. So far they have mainly been concerned with the production of experimental works both in Europe and the US. One important point in the building of the Eyebeam Gallery is that the development of new art forms requires the invention of a new form of museum building. With this in mind Diller + Scofidio will design a building which focuses on relationships between new media art and the spaces that will enable and support these relationships. In the building housing the Eyebeam Gallery we can expect a museum with a strong emphasis on the physical experience of digital artwork. Futhermore, we can expect a ”site-specific” (Diller + Scofidio) museum. A building which can be seen as an organic enlargement of the surrounding city and as a mental enlargement of the New York community.

The sidewalks outside New York Fashion Week are lined with makeshift plywood walls. They are designed to keep pedestrians out of construction zones, but they have become the backdrops of innumerable “street style” photographs, portraits taken on city streets of self-appointed fashion “influencers” and other stylish “regular” people. Photographers, working to build a reputation within the fashion industry, take photos of editors, bloggers, club kids, and models, looking to do the same thing. The makeshift walls have become a site for the staging and performance of urban style. This photo essay documents the production of style in urban space, a transient process made semi-permanent through photography.
