Human Factors, Photographic Space, and Disc Photography
Both technological and conceptual advances were important in the development of disc photography. One major conceptual advance was based on a human factors study of the ways in which people use cameras. The term “photographic space” has been introduced to describe a method of quantifying and depicting camera usage patterns. A large data base has been established that includes this usage information along with information on possible user problems and picture quality. A formal approach to utilizing this human factors data base for new product development has been established. A set of system capability equations are used to optimize the design of a camera in a way that considers frequency of usage under different picture taking conditions. Picture quality is maximized for the actual anticipated conditions of use.
