A research and development project is under way to specify, design, construct, and evaluate a user interface system to meet the unique requirements of a delivery vehicle for a knowledge-based system applied to gas turbine electronics maintenance and trouble-shooting. The prototype user interface is a portable device with text display, video and overlay graphics display, voice recognition and speech production, special-function keypad, and printer. A modular software structure based on a serial communications protocol between user interface device and expert system host computer provides flexibility, expandability, and a simple, effective user interface dialog. A human factors field evaluation is being conducted to assess aspects of system usability: device hardware, system operability, information presentation effectiveness, and user training.

Expert systems applications for special environments impose special requirements on the user-system interface. A study was conducted to determine requirements and define a design concept for the interface for an expert system being developed to support corrective maintenance and troubleshooting of gas turbine electronic equipment and controls. The resulting design specifies a portable unit containing color flat panel video/graphics display, special function membrane keypad, miniature printer, and headset with voice input/output. Communication with the expert system is structured by multiple-window information presentation and voice-activated control functions.

An experimental knowledge-based menu design assistant (MENUDA) was developed to aid the design of menu systems. A conceptual model was first developed to provide a structured construct to organize knowledge of menu system design from the available literature, and to serve as a paradigm for the development of the MENUDA system. The knowledge base and the user interface of the MENUDA system were developed under an interactive microcomputer environment supported by Texas Instruments' Personal Consultant Plus. The current version of the MENUDA system is described in the paper. In addition, the methodology used to derive rules in the MENUDA knowledge base and the appropriateness of employing a knowledge-based expert system approach to providing user interface design guidelines are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to present a case for the development of a user interface design guideline or standard for interactive voice response applications, to be widely disseminated throughout business and industry. A number of sample problems are cited, based on the author's consulting experience in this area, which serve to demonstrate that many of the problems encountered in IVR application development, particularly in scripting/dialogue design and use of automated speech recognition as a front-end, are not only solvable, but easily avoidable, given the current human factors knowledge base. The paper also discusses the Specification Document developed by the Voice Messaging User Interface Forum (1990, April), and the reasons why it cannot be applied, as written, to the user interface design of more complex IVR applications. Finally, the author proposes an approach to developing the proposed guideline/standard.
