Applications of a geographic information system–based business intelligence system for decision making at Coffee Refresh

This case is designed to illustrate how to utilize a business intelligence framework and a geographic information system to make better decisions on franchise opening requests. The case started when Jong, the senior certified analytics professional, and his team were drafting a proposal presentation on a new franchise approval process to present to Tony, the director of Coffee Refresh. Currently, Coffee Refresh was experiencing a significant delay in approving franchise opening requests. In addition, the current approval process was relied on the appraisal teams’ evaluations, which involved self-judgment as to the accessibility and visibility of the store location in each franchise opening request and a manual count of the potential targeted customers at each location, which impacted how the appraisal teams estimated the expected revenue for each location. During the first meeting with Jong and his team, Tony was frustrated by the current evaluation process, resulting in a significant backlog of requests pending approval, which was far behind the target for its franchise branch expansion strategy. It had also been reported that the branches that opened during the past few years had a relatively low success ratio (losses between 4.8% and 16.5%) and that the rate of branch closures had increased from 2% to 7.5%. Currently, eight franchise opening requests were pending, and Jong had to provide a recommendation for which requests should be approved. Coffee Refresh could approve all of them instantly, approve some of them, or even decline all of them. This was a great opportunity for Jong and his team to revisit the current franchise approval process and to demonstrate how business intelligence systems could improve the request approval process as well as address the issues of the current franchises’ underperformance and the closure rates.

The authors' focus was to determine the usefulness of the fuzzy set approach in evaluating the urban residential environment, compared with the crisp (or Boolean) approach. Particular emphasis was placed upon the comparison of evaluation results produced by the two methods within a geographic information system (GIS). This comparison highlighted the advantages of the GIS-fuzzy set approach as follows. First, it was revealed that the fuzzy set approach could reduce excessive abstraction or exaggeration in environmental phenomena. Hence, without the loss of valuable information, more accurate decisionmaking can be rendered. Second, by integrating membership functions into GIS, greater efficiency of the entire evaluation process was achieved.

<p>Erupsi Gunungapi Merapi tahun 2010 mengakibatkan banyak korban jiwa, kerusakan aset dan kerugian di berbagai bidang. Untuk meminimalkan korban jiwa, kerusakan dan kerugian, diperlukan upaya pengurangan risiko bencana (PRB). Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan adalah program desa bersaudara (<em>sister village</em>) yang digagas oleh Pemerintah Kabupaten Magelang melalui Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD). Program desa bersaudara ini bertujuan agar ada kepastian tempat pengungsian, mengurangi kesemrawutan proses pengungsian serta memudahkan pelayanan pengungsi. Program ini dapat memanfaatan Sistem Informasi Geografis/<em>Geographic Information System</em> (GIS) yang berbasis web (<em>WebGIS</em>). <em>WebGIS</em> mampu mendiseminasikan peta yang dihasilkan dalam program desa bersaudara, misalnya peta jalur evakuasi. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk mendiskripsikan pemanfataan <em>WebGIS</em> dalam mendukung program desa bersaudara, dengan mengambil kasus di Desa Ngargomulyo (desa rawan bencana) dan Desa Tamanagung (desa penyangga/ penerima pengungsi). Metodenya adalah memaparkan proses pemetaan jalur evakuasi. Proses penyusunan peta tersebut terbagi empat tahap:   survei lapangan, penyiapan data spasial, coding dan publikasi. Hasilnya adalah tampilan peta jalur evakuasi yang bisa diakses oleh siapapun tanpa menggunakan aplikasi GIS yang memudahkan masyarakat pengungsi, penerima pengungsi, pemerintah maupun parapihak, mengetahui asal pengungsi, jalur evakuasi dan titik pengungsian. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa pemetaan <em>WebGIS</em> dapat mendukung upaya PRB dengan keunggulan bisa dijangkau pengguna secara sangat luas.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Kata kunci</strong>: desa bersaudara, <em>sister village</em>, pemetaan jalur evakuasi, <em>gis</em>, <em>webgis</em></p>

District of West Padang which is the area closest to the coast and has a high population. Therefore a geographic information system was created using the A-Star Algorithm method. The A-Star algorithm uses the closest distance estimation to reach a goal and has a heuristic value that is used as a basis for consideration. In this system there are alternative paths and show the amount of capacity and distance from the shelter to be addressed.
