Recently, many countries, including developing countries, have struggled to manage rising healthcare costs and challenges around decreasing quality of care. Previous studies suggest that electronic health systems could significantly improve the quality of care and facilitate better access to care. However, there is still a lack of studies providing sufficient evidence around how this can be achieved. This case study examines how a hospital uses its electronic health (eHealth) systems to offer better access, quality, and value by leveraging the principles of value-based care for its patients. This case study provides critical insights for healthcare stakeholders, public hospitals, especially in developing countries, healthcare providers and policymakers and proffers an approach to leverage the principles of value-based care when developing eHealth systems to offer better overall health and well-being services to their patients.

This case is designed to illustrate how to utilize a business intelligence framework and a geographic information system to make better decisions on franchise opening requests. The case started when Jong, the senior certified analytics professional, and his team were drafting a proposal presentation on a new franchise approval process to present to Tony, the director of Coffee Refresh. Currently, Coffee Refresh was experiencing a significant delay in approving franchise opening requests. In addition, the current approval process was relied on the appraisal teams’ evaluations, which involved self-judgment as to the accessibility and visibility of the store location in each franchise opening request and a manual count of the potential targeted customers at each location, which impacted how the appraisal teams estimated the expected revenue for each location. During the first meeting with Jong and his team, Tony was frustrated by the current evaluation process, resulting in a significant backlog of requests pending approval, which was far behind the target for its franchise branch expansion strategy. It had also been reported that the branches that opened during the past few years had a relatively low success ratio (losses between 4.8% and 16.5%) and that the rate of branch closures had increased from 2% to 7.5%. Currently, eight franchise opening requests were pending, and Jong had to provide a recommendation for which requests should be approved. Coffee Refresh could approve all of them instantly, approve some of them, or even decline all of them. This was a great opportunity for Jong and his team to revisit the current franchise approval process and to demonstrate how business intelligence systems could improve the request approval process as well as address the issues of the current franchises’ underperformance and the closure rates.

Healthcare infrastructure in the emerging economies is largely concentrated in their urban areas, and the burgeoning rural population is usually deprived of quality medical care. Telemedicine systems are expected to bridge this gap. This case study documents telemedicine’s significance and allows students to examine India’s national patient-to-doctor telemedicine service, eSanjeevaniOPD. The portal provides free and contactless consultation by a government doctor using video calls. COVID-19 hastened the adoption of eSanjeevaniOPD in the country, but its post-covid future would largely depend on feature innovation, architecture development, and digital strategies. With a total of three million teleconsultations in one year, eSanjeevaniOPD is one of the world’s largest digital healthcare delivery systems. This case provides insight into Indian health infrastructure, summarizes the journey of eSanjeevaniOPD, and raises questions on the digital transformation of the Indian healthcare delivery system.

The Northern Michigan University (NMU) online campus, fondly known as the “Global Campus,” is now 5 years old. Launched in 2016, this online and distance education initiative had as its mission to create academic programs that meet students’ learning and service needs “at the same high standard we do for on-campus students” (NMU). This was a kind of organic final step in the journey of digital transformation that began sixteen years before. Nonetheless, how does NMU make a pivot from 117 years of traditional face-to-face learning model to create value and compete in the digital education space? Worse still, when the Covid-19 global pandemic hits in March 2020 and the campus is forced to shut down (mandating all face-to-face teaching and learning, and to transition to online delivery within just two business days and a weekend); how does the university handle this new set of challenges as its online model gets tested in real-time? The story of NMU’s evolution to online education is told by intrinsic and extrinsic factors including declining enrollments due to changing local economics and regional demographics, an old business model now compounded by a global pandemic. This mix of factors would seem to present NMU with both an opportunity to refine its online model and some new challenges to overcome. This evolution also speaks to the importance of having an overarching digital strategy that can drive true digital transformation.

This case focuses on initiatives taken by the Indian travel tech company MiStay during the COVID-19 pandemic and describes the unique strategies that forced its presence into the accommodation industry of India. The travel tech company acts as a liaison between hotels and travellers. With its online booking system, travellers can book rooms on an hourly basis. This discussion is based on the various hiccups the company has faced along with how the new idea of flexible room booking systems benefit all relevant parties. Here, the focus is on the change of the century-old hotel booking system, resulting in the creation of a new era for accommodation businesses. The changing perception caused by this paradigm shift in hotel booking systems is going to impact the hospitality industry as MiStay may face many potential competitors in the future.

Process mining is a big data technology, which focuses on the discovery, monitoring, and improvement of business processes, based on real data from information systems. This teaching case describes the objectives of a German airline as it introduces process mining and discusses current and future value potentials of this technology. The case is particularly useful for executive MBA courses on Strategy (the value of IT investments) or master’s-level courses on Business Process Management. This case has three main learning objectives. First, students will evaluate the capabilities of different (technological) approaches to reaching the airline’s business goals and will make a justified decision on the feasibility of implementing process mining. Second, students will analyze the airline’s approach to implementing process mining and the challenges along the way. They will derive lessons learned and discuss approaches to solving challenges. Third, students will evaluate the value potentials of process mining. This will enable the students to make well-informed decisions on technology investments and to discover how these decisions can contribute to business goals. The case is designed to be taught in two formats. In a 90-min lecture, students need to prepare short assignments for classroom discussions. In a 180-min lecture, the assignments are included as group work during the lecture, but they require the students to read the case before class. Teaching Notes, including videos and additional study material to support group work, are available to eligible lecturers upon request.

Vanya’s Dance Planet is such an organisation which used social media marketing to reach out to its target prospective customers. It required structured planning, professional knowledge about various social media platforms, and creative writing skills to post content on these platforms. The consultant organisation We4U planned and executed the social media campaigns for Vanya’s Dance Planet getting professional help from social media consultancy start-ups which can be a wise decision for some entrepreneurial ventures. But sometimes these professional tie-ups would end up with loss of time, money and trust. This case study deliberates upon such a fallout.

Well-Known Institute of Management is situated in New Delhi, India, and offers a 2-year fully residential post-graduate programme in management (MBA). Dr. Vivek Gupta joined the Well-Known Institute of Management in the year 2018 as an assistant professor in the area of information technology and system management. He is also heading the IT team of the institute. The critical and unprecedented COVID-19 situation brought another challenge for Dr. Gupta and his team. Going virtual is inevitable. But which platform will serve the purpose of running the next academic session in virtual mode? The IT team proposed a three-stage process in deciding and recommending a plausible online platform for conducting online classes. In the first stage, requirements for conducting online classes are to be analysed and recorded. In the second stage, the options available in the market are explored followed by their assessment based on the requirements recorded in Stage 1. The IT team simplified the assessment by first mapping these requirements with 20 important functionalities of these five platforms. However, the outcome was not favourable. Not a single platform is meeting all the requirements. The IT team is back to square one. In addition, there are other major considerations that needed thorough analysis like managing the desirable behaviour from the users of the selected online platform. The next few months are going to be a real challenge for Dr. Gupta and his team in aligning the institute with a new norm in the upcoming academic year.
