Introduction: A young boy presented with mandibular swelling at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Hospital Leforte, São Paulo, Brazil. Radiography showed a mixed bone lesion. Computed tomography (CT) findings were compatible with ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO). Case Report: An excisional biopsy was performed under general anesthesia. At the 6-year follow-up, local inflammation and mild exudates were found. Local recurrence of the lesion was observed on CT. Therefore, excision and curettage were performed. No signs of recurrence have been detected to date. Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a rare benign neoplasm most commonly occurring in the first decade of life, with minimal probability of malignancy. Conclusion: Clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings aid in the diagnosis, and long-term follow-up is necessary as recurrence can develop even after 6 postoperative years.

SummaryBackground/Aim: Our aim is to describe multidisciplinary approach to primary tuberculous lymphadenitis with a case report.Case Report: A 6-year-old boy was referred to İstanbul University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with the symptoms of painless extra-oral abscess and lymphadenopathy. The diagnosis of primary tuberculous lymphadenitis was proved by microbiological culture and ultrasound imaging.Conclusions: Combine tuberculosis treatment should be applied and long term follow up is necessary. Excisional biopsy for tissue diagnosis and bacterial examination with culture should be performed for an early diagnosis as a delay in treatment can lead to devastating consequences.

Over the past 20–30 years various carbon implant materials have become more interesting, because they are well accepted by the biological environment. The traditional carbon-based polymers give rise to many complications. The polymer complication may be eliminated through carbon fibres bound by pyrocarbon (carbon/carbon). Aim: The aim of this study is to present the long-term results of carbon/carbon implants. Methods: Mandibular reconstruction was performed with pure (99.99%) carbon implants in 16 patients. Predominantly tumorous cases were included (10 malignant tumors, 4 large cystic lesions and 2 augmentative processes). Results: Because the interventions had been performed 6–8 years before the last follow-up visit, the authors report long-term results. Of the 16 patients, the implants had to be removed earlier in 5 patients because of the defect that arose on the oral mucosa above the carbon plates. The most probable cause of this complication was the strain in the oral mucosa and disturbances in its blood supply (previous surgery, irradiated tissue, etc.). During the long-term follow-up, plate fracture, loosening of screws, infection or inflammation around the carbon/carbon implants were not observed. After 8 years one carbon implant was substituted with an autogenous bone. Conclusions: The clinical conclusion is that if the soft part cover is appropriate, the carbon implants are cosmetically and functionally more suitable than titanium plates. ABSTRACT Injuries to the face represent a significant risk to the health of the individual, mainly because of its significance, both functional, because it houses sensory organs and part of the respiratory and digestive systems, as well as esthetic. In this scenario, gunshot wounds in this location cause great concern on account of the magnitude of the damage, and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology team must act so that the treatment enables the rehabilitation of the patient in the shortest possible time, with a minimum of complications and sequelae. The objective of this study is to report a clinical case of a 19-year-old female patient with a comminuted fracture of the mandible body caused by a firearm projectile, treated immediately with stable internal fixation using the 2.00 mm plate-screw system for simplification of the fracture and a 2.4 mm reconstruction locking-plate on the bone gap. Relevant aspects of the surgical technique and tactics are reviewed and long-term follow-up of the patient is presented.

This study evaluated postoperative results of 8 cases of frontal sinus fractures treated by frontal sinus obliteration with autogenous bone from the anterior iliac crest. Patients and methods: The medical charts of patients sequentially treated for frontal sinus fractures by obliteration with autogenous cancellous iliac crest bone in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division of this institution were reviewed. From those, eight had complete records and adequately described long-term follow-up. All were operated by the same surgical team. Those patients were recalled and independently evaluated by 2 examiners. Radiographs and/or CT scans were available for this evaluation. Associated fractures and complications were noted. The average postoperative follow-up was 7 years, ranging from 3 to 16 years. The main complication was infection. Four patients (50%) had uneventful long-term follow-ups and four (50%) experienced complications requiring reoperation. Based on the studied sample studied the authors conclude that the obliteration with autogenous bone presented a high percentage of complications in this series.
