Abstract In this paper, we developed an automated system for the design and manufacture of three-dimensional cams. This system incorporates the computer-aided design, manufacturing and inspection three sequences into one automated process. First, a computer package employing the theory of gearing is developed for synthesizing and animating cam mechanisms. Then, a module for generating NC programs for a five-axis CNC machine to manufacture spatial cams is established. Finally, a computer-aided inspection system for measuring cam profile is introduced. This automated CAD/CAM/CAI system is illustrated with an example on the design of a roller gear cam.

Mass-produced items such as cars, consumer electronics, electronic parts, precision instruments, office supplies, and daily necessities are invariably connected to dies and molds – basic manufacturing technology whose quality determines product quality. Die and mold production is difficult due to product complexity and high-precision requirement. Advances in processing and elemental technology such as machine tools and CAD/CAM software determine whether die and mold products are acceptability and the level of production techniques in the country of manufacture. This special issue focuses on advanced die and mold manufacturing technology. Among the many interesting papers are those on machining and measurement of texture, fabrication of parts using welding, high-speed servo press, CAM system for metal forming, surface inspection system, development of liner motor machining centers, and machine tools. We are certain that you will find this issue both interesting and informative. We thank the authors for their generous cooperation and the editing staff for their many helpful suggestions.

The visual inspection system was developed for defects detection on leather surfaces, which is an important component of automatic CAD/CAM cutting systems. The main functions of the system are quality control and raw material cutting. An efficient algorithm, which combines multiresolution approach, energy and entropy matrices, is presented for detection of defects embedded in leather surface images. A wavelet band selection procedure was developed to automatically determine the number of resolution levels and decompose subimages for the best discrimination of defects and removals of repetitive texture patterns in the image. An adaptive binary thresholding is then used to separate the defective regions from the uniform gray-level background in the restored image. The proposed methodology is able to efficiently detect several types of defects that current approaches cannot detect, and is fast enough to be used for real-time leather inspection.
