Although it is generally right that tunnel and underground structures are environment favorable, the practical situation strongly depends on the geochemical features of the rock mass to be excavated. When a tunnel is built in sulfide-bearing rocks, it is analogical to the environmental impact related to mining activities. This paper presents the features of the environmental problems related to tunnel construction in sulfide-bearing rocks and the measures to cope with the problems. It is shown that more effective options are available earlier in the tunnel life, especially at the stages of feasibility and design of a tunnel project.

The impact of tunnel construction upon the environment is analyzed from the perspective of ecology, air, sound and society respectively. In the case of Three Ponds Tunnel, risk assessment is made on the environmental impact in different stages of tunnel construction. Environmental protection measures are put forward, which can serve as reference for environmental protection in the construction of similar geotecnical engineering projects.

In order to evaluate the environmental impact of tunnel construction in karst areas, this document establishes an indicator system consisting of physical geography, geology and hydrogeology as well as tunnel engineers and 19 specific indicators, along with grades and standards for assessment. The weight of each factor is determined using analytic hierarchy process, and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is adopted to make a comprehensive evaluation. Basing on investigation and documentary, Xulingguan tunnel is taken as an example, and its environmental impact grade is assessed between very weak and middle, which fits the situation of field observation.
