Among the Amphibia there are numerous examples of the suppression to a varying extent of a larval stage in the life-history. In such instances the animal is freed by various means from the necessity of passing its early phases of development in open water. This evolutionary trend has nowhere proceeded further than in the Anuran genus Eleutherodactylus, which is distributed through the Caribbean and the adjacent mainlands. In Eleutherodactylus, development is direct and wholly embryonic, and many larval features have been suppressed. In 1871 was published the first description of a West Indian frog which laid eggs in air, and from which young frogs with fully formed limbs were hatched (Bello y Espinosa, 1871). Since that time some twenty papers have been published on the embryology of different species of the genus, mainly in recent years by Dr. W. Gardner Lynn and his collaborators.

The embryonic and larval development of the pipefish Nerophis lumbriciformis is described. The full development sequence lasted 30 d (at 14–15°C), being shortened to 25–26 d at higher temperatures (16–17°C), and hatching occurred throughout a 2–3 d period. Unlike species of the genus Syngnathus, the newly hatched larvae presented a functional mouth apparatus and the yolk sac completely absorbed.

AbstractThe mycetophilid Macrocera nobilis Johnson, previously known only from forests in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, is here reported from caves in Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. A study of populations in Oklahoma shows that the short-lived adults mate in cave entrances, but that oviposition, larval development, and pupation occur only in the dark zone of caves. The larvae build extensive webs upon which they travel and which they use to capture insect prey (mostly other Diptera). Reproduction and life cycle development is not seasonal. The larval stage lasts 9 or 10 months, and the pupal stage about 2 weeks.

AbstractRisk classes defined by MDR and FDA for state-of-the-art surgical robots based on their intended use are not suitable as indicators for their hazard potential. While there is a lack of safety regulation for an increasing degree of automation as well as the degree of invasiveness into the patient’s body, adverse events have increased in the last decade. Thus, an outright identification of hazards as part of the risk analysis over the complete development process and life cycle of a surgical robot is crucial, especially when introducing new technologies. For this reason, we present a comprehensive approach for hazard identification in early phases of development. With this multi-perspective approach, the number of hazards identified can be increased. Furthermore, a generic catalogue of hazards for surgical robots has been established by categorising the results. The catalogue serves as a data pool for risk analyses and holds the potential to reduce hazards through safety measures already in the design process before becoming risks for the patient.
