This article sets out to explore, from a socio-cultural perspective, the heavy use of omission in the English translation of a popular Chinese novel Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong and its side effect: the shifts that take place on the characterization of the main character in the translated text. The descriptive perspective on the use of omission, the highly motivated, deliberate operation, shows that this method is well justified when taking into consideration the socio-cultural constraints. Nevertheless, its side effects that come along cannot be overlooked.

This article applies the theory of possible worlds to the field of translation studies by examining the narrative worlds of original and translated texts. Specifically, Marie-Laure Ryan’s characterization of possible worlds provides an account of the internal structure of the textual universe and the progression of the plot. Based on this account, one of the stories from Rumi’s Masnavi is compared to Coleman Barks’s English translation. The possible worlds of the characters and the unfolding of the plots in both texts are examined to assess the degree of compatibility between the textual universes of the original and the translated texts and how significant this might be. It also examines how readers reconstruct the narrative worlds projected by the two texts. The analysis reveals some inconsistencies in the way the textual universes of the original and translated texts are furnished and in the way readers reconstruct the narrative worlds of the two texts. The inability of translation to fully render the main character results in some loss in terms of the pungency and pithiness of the original text. It is also shown that the source text presents a richer domain of the virtual in comparison, suggesting a higher degree of tellability in the textual universe of the Masnavi’s narrative.

Differences in culture, language, and context alter the reading experience, meaning, and textual relations of modern Arabic literature in translation, which raises questions about the relationship between the Arabic and translated canon. Drawing on Lawrence Venuti, Pascale Casanova, and Abdelfattah Kilito, I explore translation as consecration, annexation, and decontextualization in order to illustrate the issues involved in Arabic–English literary travel and to move the scholarly debate on Arabic–English translation beyond questions of strategy and domestication. Through textual and paratextual analysis of the English translation of Ahmed Saadawi’s Frankenstein in Baghdad (2013/2018), I show how even a highly translatable modern Arabic text undergoes multiple semantic and symbolic shifts as it transfers into English. Bringing these findings together with observations on the wider Arabic literary translation environment, I argue that modern Arabic literature in translation is its own canon, deserving of independent study, whose hybridity can teach us much about the dynamics of cultural encounter, effects of literary capital, and the discursive and semantic disjunctions between English and Arabic culture and literature.

Worldwide statistics show8-12% of married couples have infertility problems. Between 80-90% of these were reported due to the male, and 10% due to the female. Orthodox western treatments are expensive and have side effects, so we tried an Ayurvedic regime, with its lower costs and fewer side effects. Fifteen infertile couples were selected for the treatment; of them ten completed the treatment, whilst five dropped out. We recommended a low-stress lifestyle, avoid acidic foods such as pineapple, tomato, fizzy drinks, and fast foods, and abstain from alcohol and tobacco. Those who continued the course became pregnant within three months. It would be interesting to understand the exact mechanism underlying the improvement of these treated females. Therefore further studies should focus on the characterization of the chemical composition of these herbal preparations and understanding the physiological processes involved in the process

Anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) is a diffusely infiltrating malignant, astrocytic, primary brain tumour with a peak incidence between 40 to 50 years of age is a leading cause of cancer death. Though cancer chemotherapy is highly effective in many cancers, but side-effects of chemotherapy are severe in many patients like myelosuppression, anorexia, weight loss, mucositis, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. It appears that side effects of chemotherapy are manifestations of aggravated Tridosha as Raktadushti (vitiated blood). Therefore, present case study was undertaken to find effectiveness of Ayurvedic medication as an adjuvant or co-therapy in the management of oligoastrocytoma as well as in minimizing the side effect of chemo-radiotherapy. A female patient of age 40 years with brain cancer (clinically diagnosed case of anaplastic oligoastrocytoma grade 3rd) undergoing oral chemotherapy by irnocam 150 mg, avastin 400mg for 6 cycle and radiotherapy was taken. Patient was given classical Ayurvedic formulation of Rasa sindur 50mg+ Abhrakbhasma 250mg+ Vachachurna 500mg+ Panchamritalauha guggulu 250mg BD with honey, Shatavarighrita 5gm BD with milk, Jyotishmatitaila 5 drops BD with Bataasha and cap SNEC30 (liquid curcumin capsules). After the completion of 6th cycle there were very encouraging results observed with negligible side effects, improvement in all chief complaints, general health condition and quality of life of the patient. Ayurvedic medication appears to have significant effect on reducing side effect of chemo-radiotherapy and improving quality of life in the patient of brain cancer (oligoastrocytoma).

Modern polishing, precision machining and microindentation techniques allow the processing and mechanical characterization of ceramics at nanometric scales and within entirely plastic deformation regimes. The mechanical response of most ceramics to such highly constrained contact is not predictable from macroscopic properties and the microstructural deformation patterns have proven difficult to characterize by the application of any individual technique. In this study, TEM techniques of contrast analysis and CBED are combined with stereographic analysis to construct a three-dimensional microstructure deformation map of the surface of a perfectly plastic microindentation on macroscopically brittle aluminum nitride. The bright field image in Figure 1 shows a lg Vickers microindentation contained within a single AlN grain far from any boundaries. High densities of dislocations are evident, particularly near facet edges but are not individually resolvable. The prominent bend contours also indicate the severity of plastic deformation. Figure 2 is a selected area diffraction pattern covering the entire indentation area.

SummaryHydroxyurea (HU) is usually a well tolerated antineoplastic agent and is commonly used in the treatment of chronic myeloproliferative diseases. Dermatological side effects are frequently seen in patients receiving longterm HU therapy. Cutaneous ulcers have been reported occasionally. We report on four patients with cutaneous ulcers whilst on long-term hydroxyurea therapy for myeloproliferative diseases. In all patients we were able to reduce the dose, or stop HU altogether and their ulcers markedly improved. Our observations suggest that cutaneous ulcers should be considered as possible side effect of long-term HU therapy and healing of the ulcers can be achieved not only by cessation of the HU treatment, but also by reducing the dose of hydroxyurea for a limited time.
