In-situ measurement of head flying height and attitude using image processing of fringe patterns formed by Michelson interferometry is studied. A wide laser beam is applied to illuminate the slider back surface and disk surface simultaneously to create interferometric fringe patterns. Employing the relationships arising between the two fringe patterns, the calculation procedure is formulated to yield the slider’s parallel, pitch and roll displacements. Experimental fringe patterns are captured in a single visual field by a high-speed CCD camera. Image processing for a higher signal-to-noise ratio, such as smoothing, filtering, amplification and ridge line extraction is then applied to the image data. Additionally, average processing with respect to multiple fringe lines to produce higher accuracy is successfully applied. Measured values of flying height and pitch and roll displacements are confirmed to be in good accordance with the calculation results, demonstrating excellent applicability of the present method down to the near-contact region.

It is very important to measure a grinding wheel surface topography. Therefore a three dimensional measurement system of grinding wheel surface with image processing has been proposed. This system can evaluate a variety of the wheel surface topographies. For example, a histogram of the area or the shape of cutting edges and the distribution map of every shape of cutting edges were obtained. In this paper, a three dimensional model of the cutting edges and a correlation between the state of the wheel surface and grinding mark on the workpiece are reported and the effectiveness is evaluated through an experiment.

To provide precise configuration reference for the engineering bionics, high accuracy detection in large field of view on the natural biological body is a prerequisite. Targeting the streamline body of carcharhinus brachyurous, 3D (three dimensional) measurement was carried out with monocular and binocular vision inspecting system based on sinusoidal structure light. By means of moving the vision sensor driven by a stepper motor, fringe patterns with variable fringe spacing were projected to every parts of the shark body, then the point clouds of different parts of the whole shark body were obtained. Using the quaternion method to joint the edges of these point clouds together, surface reconstruction was conducted. Finally the digital model of the low resistance body of shark was achieved. It would be useful reference for the configuration design of underwater vehicles, especially microminiature biomimetic underwater vehicles.

Grinding process is a very efficient machining technology because innumerable abrasive grains are fixed on the surface of grinding wheel. Especially, the distribution and shape of cutting edges which directly affect grinding process have a big influence on accuracy. Thus, it is very important to measure a wheel surface topography from a viewpoint of evaluating the wheel life and the performance and a relation between the one and the roughness. In this study, a three-dimensional measurement system of a grinding wheel surface with image processing is developed. In this system, the distribution and height of cutting edges are analyzed because only cutting edges can be selected from among all abrasive grains.
