B. Shader and W. So introduced the idea of the skew adjacency matrix. Their idea was to give an orientation to a simple undirected graph G from which a skew adjacency matrix S(G) is created. The -adjacency matrix extends this idea to an arbitrary field F. To study the underlying undirected graph, the average -characteristic polynomial can be created by averaging the characteristic polynomials over all the possible orientations. In particular, a Harary-Sachs theorem for the average-characteristic polynomial is derived and used to determine a few features of the graph from the average-characteristic polynomial.

An oriented graph $\overleftarrow{G}$ is a simple undirected graph $G$ with an orientation, which assigns to each edge a direction so that $\overleftarrow{G}$ becomes a directed graph. $G$ is called the underlying graph of $\overleftarrow{G}$ and we denote by $S(\overleftarrow{G})$ the skew-adjacency matrix of $\overleftarrow{G}$ and its spectrum $Sp(\overleftarrow{G})$ is called the skew-spectrum of $\overleftarrow{G}$. In this paper, the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the skew-adjacency matrix $S(\overleftarrow{G}) $ are given in terms of $\overleftarrow{G}$ and as its applications, new combinatorial proofs of known results are obtained and new families of oriented bipartite graphs $\overleftarrow{G}$ with $Sp(\overleftarrow{G})={\bf i} Sp(G) $ are given.

The kinematic chain isomorphism problem is one of the most challenging problems facing mechanism researchers. Methods using the spectral properties, characteristic polynomial and eigenvectors, of the graph related matrices were developed in literature for isomorphism detection. Detection of isomorphism using only the spectral properties corresponds to a polynomial time isomorphism detection algorithm. However, most of the methods used are either computationally inefficient or unreliable (i.e., failing to identify non-isomorphic chains). This work establishes the reliability of using the characteristic polynomial of the Laplace matrix for isomorphism detection of a kinematic chain. The Laplace matrix of a graph is used extensively in the field of algebraic graph theory for characterizing a graph using its spectral properties. The reliability in isomorphism detection of the characteristic polynomial of the Laplace matrix was comparable with that of the adjacency matrix. However, using the characteristic polynomials of both the matrices is superior to using either method alone. In search for a single matrix whose characteristic polynomial unfailingly detects isomorphism, novel matrices called the extended adjacency matrices are developed. The reliability of the characteristic polynomials of these matrices is established. One of the proposed extended adjacency matrices is shown to be the best graph matrix for isomorphism detection using the characteristic polynomial approach.

An oriented graph $G^{\sigma}$ is a simple undirected graph $G$ with an orientation $\sigma$, which assigns to each edge a direction so that $G^{\sigma}$ becomes a directed graph. $G$ is called the underlying graph of $G^{\sigma}$, and we denote by $Sp(G)$ the adjacency spectrum of $G$. Skew-adjacency matrix $S( G^{\sigma} )$ of $G^{\sigma}$ is introduced, and its spectrum $Sp_S( G^{\sigma} )$ is called the skew-spectrum of $G^{\sigma}$. The relationship between $Sp_S( G^{\sigma} )$ and $Sp(G)$ is studied. In particular, we prove that (i) $Sp_S( G^{\sigma} ) = {\bf i} Sp(G)$ for some orientation $\sigma$ if and only if $G$ is bipartite, (ii) $Sp_S(G^{\sigma}) = {\bf i} Sp(G)$ for any orientation $\sigma$ if and only if $G$ is a forest, where ${\bf i}=\sqrt{-1}$.

We study linearized systems of equations in characteristic [Formula: see text] of the form [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is a square matrix and [Formula: see text]. We present algorithms for calculating their solutions and for determining the minimum distance of their solution spaces. In the case when [Formula: see text] has entries in [Formula: see text], the finite field of [Formula: see text] elements, we explore the relationships between the minimal and characteristic polynomials of [Formula: see text] and the above mentioned features of the solution space. In order to extend and generalize these findings to the case when [Formula: see text] has entries in an arbitrary field of characteristic [Formula: see text], we obtain generalizations of the characteristic polynomial of a matrix and the Cayley–Hamilton theorem to square linearized systems.

In this work we show that that many of the basic results concerning the theory of the characteristic polynomial of a graph can be derived as easy consequences of a determinantal identity due to Jacobi. As well as improving known results, we are also able to derive a number of new ones. A combinatorial interpretation of the Christoffel-Darboux identity from the theory of orthogonal polynomials is also presented. Finally, we extend some work of Tutte on the reconstructibility of graphs with irreducible characteristic polynomials.

In this paper, the skew spectra of two orientations of the Cartesian products are discussed, as applications, new families of oriented bipartite graphs ${G^{\sigma}}$ with $Sp({G^{\sigma}})={\bf i} Sp(G)$ are given and the orientation of a product graph with maximum skew energy is obtained.

A linkage characteristic polynomial is defined as the characteristic polynomial of the adjacency matrix of the kinematic graph of the kinematic chain. Some terminology and definitions, needed for discussions to follow in a companion paper, are stated. A rule from which all coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a kinematic chain can be identified by inspection, based on the interpretation of a graph determinant, is derived and presented. This inspection rule interprets the topological meanings behind each characteristic coefficient, and might have some interesting possible uses in studies of the structural analysis and synthesis of kinematic chains.

Abstract The distance matrix 𝒟(G) of a connected graph G is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The transmission of a vertex vi in G is the sum of the distances from vi to all other vertices and T(G) is the diagonal matrix of transmissions of the vertices of the graph. The normalized distance Laplacian, 𝒟𝒧(G) = I−T(G)−1/2 𝒟(G)T(G)−1/2, is introduced. This is analogous to the normalized Laplacian matrix, 𝒧(G) = I − D(G)−1/2 A(G)D(G)−1/2, where D(G) is the diagonal matrix of degrees of the vertices of the graph and A(G) is the adjacency matrix. Bounds on the spectral radius of 𝒟 𝒧 and connections with the normalized Laplacian matrix are presented. Twin vertices are used to determine eigenvalues of the normalized distance Laplacian. The distance generalized characteristic polynomial is defined and its properties established. Finally, 𝒟𝒧-cospectrality and lack thereof are determined for all graphs on 10 and fewer vertices, providing evidence that the normalized distance Laplacian has fewer cospectral pairs than other matrices.

The power method is commonly applied to compute the Perron vector of large adjacency matrices. Blondel et al. [SIAM Rev. 46, 2004] investigated its performance when the adjacency matrix has multiple eigenvalues of the same magnitude. It is well known that the Lanczos method typically requires fewer iterations than the power method to determine eigenvectors with the desired accuracy. However, the Lanczos method demands more computer storage, which may make it impractical to apply to very large problems. The present paper adapts the analysis by Blondel et al. to the Lanczos and restarted Lanczos methods. The restarted methods are found to yield fast convergence and to require less computer storage than the Lanczos method. Computed examples illustrate the theory presented. Applications of the Arnoldi method are also discussed.
