Abstract. This study on the monitoring of the diversity and abundance of wildlife around the wildlife corridor area on Highway 304, which passes through Khao Yai and Thap Lan National Parks, was conducted during September 2017 and May 2021 using camera traps to constantly monitor the area. A total of at least 51 wildlife species from 30 families, 14 orders were recorded. The species with the highest abundances were Sambar Deer, Wild Boar, Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, Gaur, Northern Red Muntjac, Siamese Fireback, Malayan Porcupine, Red Junglefowl, etc. The wildlife species recorded include 2 critically endangered species, 3 endangered, 10 vulnerable, 1 near threatened. In this study we also recorded images of a Fishing Cat, which is the first photographically record in this World Heritage Site. The evenness index indicates that the wildlife community in the area is stable. No significant differences in the diversity and abundance of wildlife before or after the corridor construction were seen. The wildlife in the area were active throughout the day. We also found that the highway is the main factor effecting the presence of wildlife. The study results show the importance of this area that the highway passes through. Building wildlife corridors between the two national parks is very important for maintaining the wildlife community as well as continuity. Suggestions from the study include management of human activity in the area including traffic, noise, vehicle speed and living activities in the area that may attract wildlife closer to the community and cause other impacts.

The Wadden Sea ecosystem is unique in many respects from a biological perspective. This is one reason why it is protected by national parks in Germany and by its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In biology didactics, there are only a few studies that focus on the Wadden Sea. This work investigates students’ word associations with the two stimulus words “national park” and “UNESCO World Heritage Site”. The survey was conducted among students living directly at the Wadden Sea and among students from the inland. The analysis of the identified associations (n = 8345) was carried out within the framework of a quantitative content analysis to be able to present and discuss the results on a group level. A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups. Overall, results showed that the students made subject-related associations as well as a large number of associations to both stimulus words that could be judged as non-subject-related. In some cases, a connection with the region of residence could be found, but this was not generally the case. Even students’ immediate residential proximity to the Wadden Sea is no guarantee that they have knowledge of the two considered protection terms.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Flood is a major threat to one of the UNESCO world heritage site of India-The Kaziranga National Park. Every year during the monsoon several hundreds of animals which include globally threatened species like single-horned Indian Rhinoceros of Kaziranga lose their lives due to the flood. The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can be used to monitoring the flood than the optical remote sensors because of their capability of all-weather and time-independent operability. The microwave L band is most suitable for the flood studies because of its higher penetration capability even through the vegetation. In this study, the advantages of SAR polarimetry and Interferometry of multi-temporal L band dual-pol data of ALOS PALSAR 2 were used to characterize the flooded area and also to monitor the flood extent. The H/ A/ Alpha decomposition gives a better characterization of the flooded area. The separability analysis is done with a different combination of decomposition parameters and the parameters having high-class separability between water and non-water areas are selected. Polarimetric classification using Random forest classifier is done on these selected decomposition parameters to classify the study into water and non-water areas. The classified images of different months before, during and after the flood time is used to quantitatively estimate the flood extent and for time series analysis. The Interferometric SAR coherence images along with the backscatter images are used to generate the RGB composites which also gives times series information on the flood impact.</p>

Abstract Ecological risk assessment plays an important role in avoiding disasters and reducing losses. Natural world heritage site is the most precious natural assets on earth, yet few studies have assessed ecological risks from the perspective of world heritage conservation and management. A methodology for considering ecological threats and vulnerabilities and focusing on heritage value was introduced and discussed for the Bogda component of the Xinjiang Tianshan Natural World Heritage Site. Three important results are presented. (1) Criteria layers and ecological risk showed obvious spatial heterogeneity. Extremely high-risk and high-risk areas, accounting for 13.60% and 32.56%, respectively, were mainly gathered at Tianchi Lake and Bogda Glacier, whereas the extremely low-risk and low-risk areas, covering 1.33% and 17.51% of the site,were mainly distributed to the north and scattered around in the southwest montane region. (2) The level of risk was positively correlated with the type of risk, and as the level of risk increases, the types of risk increase. Only two risk types were observed in the extremely low-risk areas, whereas six risk types were observed in the high-risk areas and eight risk types were observed in the extremely high-risk areas. (3) From the perspective of risk probability and ecological damage, four risk management categories were proposed, and correlative strategies were proposed to reduce the possibility of ecological risk and to sustain or enhance heritage value.

Logging of the riparian old-growth white spruce forests of Wood Buffalo National Park took place from 1951 to 1991. Operations were conducted in the Peace River valley in the Big Island block (Timber Berth (TB) 408) and the Peace Delta block, and in the Athabasca River valley. Approximately 70% of the pre-logging old-growth riparian forests have been lost to logging, leaving a remnant of ~100 km2 in the park, of which ~30 km2 are found in TB408. A minimum of 100 km2 has been logged from TB408. Natural regeneration has failed on 93% of these lands (9300 ha). The logging agreement, which expired in 1981, was renewed in 1983, the same year in which Wood Buffalo National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The history of logging in Wood Buffalo National Park is characterized by government mismanagement and industrial malpractice. There was never legal authority to log in Wood Buffalo National Park, as it contravened the National Parks Act (1930). The need for restoration is discussed. World Heritage Sites is a term addressed to special places such as national parks, forests, mountains, lakes, deserts, buildings, complexes, regions, rural and cities that have been nominated by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Sciencetific, and Cultural Organization) for the International World Heritage program. The Old City of Semarang in 2016 has entered as one of the nominees of World Heritage Site and until now is in the process of submitting terms to become World Heritage Site. One of the important things that need to be done in the process is to identify and inventory the problems to be handled immediately. The purpose of this research is to find the problems in the management of the Old City of Semarang so that it can be handled and anticipated. The research method used is qualitative rationalistic with empirical approach. The results of this research are the problems that occur in the Old Town of Semarang is quite complex and diverse, among others: 1) environmental problems, namely prone to natural disasters (rob floods and puddles), high traffic volume causes pollution of fading and vibration , the unavailability of public transportation "ngetem" space, lack of provision of infrastructure and facilities and open green spaces; 2) building problems, ie there are still vacant buildings that have not been utilized properly, the building owner / user neglect, the utilization of buildings that are inconsistent with preservation rules, and the lack of maintenance of buildings; 3) social problems, that is the existence of homeless / homeless who occupy abandoned buildings, street vendors, excessive tourist attraction and crime; 4) governance issues, namely lack of clarity of tupoksi and authority of Semarang City Old Town, lack of coordination among stakeholders, and less implementation of RTBL policy regulation of Kota Lama Semarang (Regional Regulation Number 8 of 2003)Keywords: problem, management, site, heritage, worldWorld Heritage Sites atau Situs Warisan Dunia merupakan istilah yang ditujukan kepada tempat khusus seperti taman nasional, hutan, pegunungan, danau, gurun pasir, bangunan, kompleks, wilayah, pedesaan, dan kota yang telah dinominasikan oleh UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Sciencetific, and Cultural Organization) untuk program Warisan Dunia Internasional. Kota Lama Semarang pada tahun 2016 sudah masuk sebagai salah satu nominasi World Heritage Site dan sampai dengan saat ini sedang berproses untuk pengajuan syarat-syarat menjadi World Heritage Site. Salah satu hal penting yang perlu dilakukan dalam proses tersebut adalah mengindentifikasi dan menginventarisasi permasalahan agar bisa segera ditangani.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menemukan permasalahan-permasalahan dalam pengelolaan Kota Lama Semarang sehingga bisa segera ditangani dan diantisipasi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif rasionalistik dengan pendekatan empiris. Hasil yang ditemukan dari penelitian ini adalah permasalahan yang terjadi di Kawasan Kota Lama Semarang cukup kompleks dan beragam, antara lain: 1) masalah lingkungan, yaitu rawan terhadap bencana alam (banjir rob dan genangan), volume lalu lintas yang tinggi menyebabkan polusi udaran dan getaran, belum tertatanya ruang “ngetem” angkutan umum, kurangnya penyediaan infrastruktur dan fasilitas serta ruang terbuka hijau; 2) masalah bangunan, yaitu masih terdapat bangunan-bangunan kosong terlancar dan belum dimanfaatkan dengan tepat, pembiaran bangunan oleh pemilik/pengguna, pemanfaatan bangunan yang tidak sesuai dengan kaidah pelestarian, dan kurangnya perawatan bangunan; 3) masalah sosial, yaitu masih adanya gelandangan/tuna wisma yang menempati bangunan-bangunan terlantar, pedagang kaki lima, tarikan wisata yang berlebihan dan kriminalitas; 4) masalah tata kelola, yaitu kurang jelasnya tupoksi dan kewenangan pengelola Kawasan Kota Lama Semarang, kurangnya koordinasi antar stakeholder, dan kurang implementatif peraturan kebijakan RTBL Kota Lama Semarang (Perda No. 8 tahun 2003).Kata kunci: masalah, pengelolaan, situs, warisan, dunia
