This study investigated the effects of air traffic control (ATC) induced information load and ATC communication modality on crew error in a fixed-base Boeing 747-400 flight deck simulator. To accomplish this, data from an experiment conducted by Boeing (Logan, et al., 1992) were re-analyzed. In this experiment, flightcrews engaged in two high-fidelity, full-mission scenarios. For this re-analysis, the variability in the amount of information ATC transmitted to the crew in the scheduled clearances was examined as an independent variable. To quantify this measure of information load, each scheduled ATC clearance was decomposed into mutually exclusive informational units called propositions. Each proposition consisted of one discrete “chunk” of information. On average, ATC clearances in the high information load condition contained more than two and a half times as many propositions as clearances in the low information load condition. Flightcrews made significantly more errors, and more errors per proposition, in the high information load condition than in the low information load condition. This indicates that it was the density of the information, or how many propositions were packed into each clearance, and not just the quantity of information which affected crew performance. Another manipulated variable was ATC communication modality. Each flightcrew participated in one scenario using a standard voice communications modality exclusively and in the other scenario using a combination of voice and digital DataLink. Though flightcrew error was significantly lower in the DataLink condition than the voice condition, this tendency was moderated by information load. In the low information load condition, flightcrews committed approximately the same number of errors in the voice and DataLink conditions, but in the high information load condition, flightcrews committed many more errors in the voice condition than the DataLink condition.

The dual power supply system is widely used in our daily life. When power instantaneously switched between the main power and the stand-by power supply, the voltage fluctuations had the varying degree influence on machines. Based on the principle of correlation coefficient of two waveforms and instantaneous reactive power theory, the dual-power supply automatic and instantaneous switching device without disturbance is provided in this paper. The equipment could identify and isolate the broken-down power source in 5ms. At the same time, power supply keeps continuous meeting the requirements of power quality without voltage drop.

The convergence of the voice and data worlds is introducing exciting opportunities to companies. As a consequence, Voice over IP (VoIP) technology is attracting increasing attention and interest in the industry. Flexibility and cost efficiency are the key factors luring enterprises to transition to VoIP. However, voice services also introduce a new level of vulnerability to the network. This chapter categorizes and analyzes the most common security threats of a VoIP solution in a corporate environment. Besides that, the authors discuss the most relevant security policies that could have been adopted to mitigate the security vulnerabilities introduced by VoIP. These new policies and practices can have a positive impact on the security of the whole network, not just voice communications.

The article concerns the use of computer support systems for technical support in the difficult conditions. The term difficult conditions should be understood as such conditions, in which an operation is carried out in a specific location, impeding or preventing the use of the computer. In such cases, computers integrated with operators’ working clothes (wearable computers) should be used, with which the communication takes place using voice. This article shows the attempt to resolve the problem of voice communications in a portable system to handle aircraft M-28.

The purpose of this article is to show how one urban school district dealt with a perceived need to improve its effectiveness in diagnosing and treating voice disorders. The local school district established semiannual voice clinics. Students aged 5-18 were referred, screened, and selected for the clinics if they appeared to have a chronic voice problem. The specific procedures used in setting up the voice clinics and the subsequent changes made over a 10-year period are presented.
