Identifying how policy, socioeconomic factors, and environmental factors influence changes in human well-being (HWB) and conservation efficiency is important for ecological management and sustainable development, especially in the Giant Panda National Park (GPNP). In this study, we systematically analyzed the differences in the conservation status of the giant panda habitat and changes in HWB over 15 years in the GPNP, which includes six mountain sites, Minshan (MS), Qionglai (QLS), Xiaoxiangling (XXL), Liangshan (LS), Qinling (QL), and Daxiangling (DXL). Redundancy analyses were used to determine the factors contributing (policy, socioeconomic factors, and environmental factors) to HWB and giant panda habitat conservation (HC). In addition, using a structural equation model (SEM), we investigated the relationship between the aforementioned three factors and their direct and indirect effects on HWB and HC. The results indicated that there was spatiotemporal heterogeneity of HWB and HC in our study area. There was an increasing number of plant species as well as an increased number of giant panda in GPNP. Generally, HWB in 2015 showed an increasing trend compared with that in 2000. Socioeconomic factors (23.6%) have the biggest influence on HWB and HC, followed by policy (23.2%) and environmental factors (19.4%). Conservation policy had a significantly positive influence on HWB (0.52), while it negatively influenced HC (−0.15). Socioeconomic factors significantly negatively influenced HWB (−0.38). The formulation and implementation of policies to promote economic development will contribute to the protection of giant pandas and their habitat. Our results provide insight on the conservation status of the giant panda habitat, HWB, and factors influencing them in different mountain sites in the GPNP, as well as having implications for the future management of the GPNP.

The possible impact of invasive ants on the avifauna of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands was investigated by studying the breeding success of Tristram's Storm-petrel Oceanodroma tristrami on Laysan Island. The tramp ant Monomorium pharaonis (L.) was found to be abundant in storm-petrel nesting areas on Laysan Island. There were 380 observations made on incubating adults and 798 observations for chicks, for a total of 1178 observations from 116 storm-petrel nest sites. No ant harassment events involving incubating adult storm-petrels were recorded. Thirteen instances of more than 5 ants on Tristram's Storm-petrel chicks were recorded. One harassment event was recorded, involving approximately 200 ants. The chick left the nest site immediately following the event, did not return, and presumably died. The number of nest failures attributed to M. pharaonis was 1% (n = 116). There was a significant relationship between nest type and ant interactions (G = 24.45, p = <0.0001, n =55), with incidents only recorded from birds nesting under vegetation. It was hypothesized that the ant interactions recorded in this study were a result of Tristram's Storm-petrel chicks being in close proximity to M. pharaonis nests rather than direct predation. Thus no evidence was found of a severe impact of invasive ants on the breeding success of storm-petrels at Laysan Island. Despite no direct ant impact particular attention should be given to the interactions between M. pharaonis and bird species reliant on vegetation for nesting cover, and studies therefore should include additional breeding bird species.

AbstractWe contribute to the knowledge of charophyte meadows as key components of aquatic systems by analysing how they affect wetland sediments. We performed a factorial-design experiment with limnocorrals (outdoor mesocosms) in a Mediterranean protected wetland with presence or absence of charophytes [Chara vulgaris (CV) and Chara hispida (CH), planted from cultures or recruited in situ from germination of their fructifications]. The first 1 cm-surficial and 2 cm-bottom sediment layers were analysed for cladoceran ephippia, ostracods valves, benthic community of bacteria and periphytic biofilm, and charophyte fructifications. In the surficial sediment, the ephippia density was fourfold higher in the conditions with charophytes than in sites with no-charophytes and higher apparent viability was found. The surficial sediment periphyton biofilm was composed mainly of diatoms, with tenfold higher biomass underneath charophytes, and a much diverse community. The specific microhabitat generated by each charophyte species was reflected in the different abundances and relationships between the analysed components, firstly establishing a divergence with the sediment without meadows and, secondly, a distinction between the meadows of CH and CV that exhibit particular morphology-architecture, might exudate different metabolites and might have different allelopathic capacities over microalgae and microinvertebrates. Thus, the charophyte–sediment tandem is relevant for biodiversity and habitat conservation.
