The scientific assessment of regional ecosystem service value (ESV) is helpful in developing scientific ecological protection plans and compensation policies. However, an ESV evaluation method that can adapt to the complex and diverse characteristics of the ecological environment has not been established. This study takes Gansu Province in China as an example, fully considering the regional differences in ecosystem service function. Five correction indices for the value equivalent factor per unit area were constructed on a provincial scale, and a regional difference adjustment index for 11 categories of ecosystem services was constructed on a regional scale. In this way, a value evaluation model based on regional differences was established. The results show that in 2015, the total ESV reached 2,239.56 billion yuan in Gansu Province, with ESV gradually increasing from the northeast to the southwest, and the high-value areas of service function being located in Qilian and Longnan Mountains. The forest and grassland ecosystems contributed the most to the ESV. From the perspective of value composition, local climate regulation and biodiversity maintenance functions are the main service functions of Gansu Province. From 2000 to 2015, ESV increased by 3.43 billion yuan in the province. The value of forest and urban ecosystems continued to increase, whereas the value of cultivated land ecosystem continued to decrease. In terms of spatial characteristics of the service value change, the area that experienced value reduction gradually moved from the central part of Gansu Province to the surrounding areas. The evaluation method proposed in this paper provides a relatively comprehensive evaluation scheme for the spatiotemporal dynamic evaluation of ESV in complex ecological environments.

AbstractScientific assessment of regional ecosystem service value (ESV) is helpful to make scientific ecological protection plan and compensation policy. The evaluation method has not been established that is adapted to the complex and diverse characteristics of the ecological environment. This paper takes Gansu Province as an example, on the basis of fully considering the regional differences of ecosystem service function, the five correction index of value equivalent factor per unit area were constructed in the provincial scale, and the regional difference adjustment index of 11 kinds of ES was constructed in regional scale, in the way, the value evaluation model based on regional difference was established. The results show that in 2015, the total ESV reached 2239.555 billion Yuan in Gansu Province, ESV gradually increased from the northeast to the southwest, and the high-value areas of service function located in Qilian Mountain and Longnan Mountain, of which the forest and grassland ecosystem contributed the most to the value. From the perspective of value composition, local climate regulation and biodiversity maintenance function are the main service functions of Gansu Province. From 2000 to 2015, ESV increased by 3.426 billion Yuan in Gansu Province, the value of forest and urban ecosystem continued increasing, while the value of cultivated land ecosystem continue decreasing. From the spatial characteristics of service value change, the area of value reduction gradually moved from the central part of Gansu Province to the surrounding area. In general, although this study needs further improvement, the constructed evaluation method provides a relatively comprehensive evaluation scheme for the spatiotemporal dynamic evaluation of ESV in Gansu Province. This study provided a more overall research idea for the evaluation of ESV under complex ecological environment.

The process of ecosystem service value evaluation has developed from the use of a single economic value that only accounts for material products to an assessment of ecological value and the value of ecosystem services. However, due to the complexity of ecosystems and different understandings of ecosystem service values, different classification methods of ecosystem services and service values have been developed internationally, and this has resulted in a lack of clarity regarding the correlation between ecosystem service value and various ecosystems. The correspondence between the system and each value type is not clear; therefore, based on an analysis of the inadequacy of domestic and foreign ecosystem service classification systems and methods, this study constructed a new accounting framework for non-monetary ecosystem service functions based on emergy analysis and integrated monetary accounting methods. The practical application of the method was also researched. The research results re-classified the value of ecosystem services, established an accounting method for various ecosystem service values, clarified the principle of addition in accounting, and avoided double counting. In the empirical analysis, a large number of correlation coefficients, parameters, and index values found in the foreign literature were used, so, our method also has value for international use.

The comprehensive application of ecosystem service value (ESV) and ecological risk index (ERI) assessment can provide better decision support for regional ecological environment protection. Based on the remote sensing image data of Wuhu city of 1995, 2005 and 2016, the paper analyzed the spatial-temporal evolution of ESV and ERI in Wuhu city and its associated characteristics using an ESV, ERI assessments and a bivariate spatial autocorrelation method. The results showed that (1) the total ESV of Wuhu city continued to decline from 1995 to 2016, with a decrease of US$ 363.664 million. The total ESV per unit area of the sampling plot decreased, and the high-value was mainly distributed in areas within 5–10 km along the Yangtze River floodplain. (2) Wuhu city was mainly dominated by a relatively low ERI and medium ERI from 1995 to 2016. The high-value areas were mainly distributed in the mainstream of the Yangtze River, and the overall ERI improved. (3) There was a positive spatial correlation between the total ESV per unit area and ERI in Wuhu city, and these areas were mainly distributed in the Yangtze River mainstream region. According to this research, it is necessary to pay attention to the protection of wetland and forest landscapes, strengthen wetland ecological protection based on the Yangtze River and protect and restore natural mountain forests, all of which play important roles in improving the ecosystem service function of Wuhu city and protecting the ecological environment of the Yangtze River. We should act on that knowledge, and produce effective environmental regulations and habitat restoration efforts that improve the ESV and reduce the ERI. The findings of the study can serve as a reference for the management and protection of ecological environments in river-crossing cities.

For the quantitative calculation of the marine ecosystem service value loss caused by the oil spill, the damage assessment standards of marine ecosystem were established here based on the related knowledge of environmentology, ecology, chemistry, ecotoxicology and so on. First, the types of marine ecosystem and their service functions were classified, then the health assessment on the marine ecosystem was conducted by using Index System Method, and the marine ecosystem service function loss rate was calculated by using the sensitivity analysis method. Finally, the marine ecosystem service value loss of polluted sea area was assessed according to the average public value of different marine ecosystems, and the loss caused by the “Tasman Sea” case was calculated by applying the methods above.

As one theory of ecological economics, the theory of ecosystem service gets wide attention and rapid development from the beginning, and to find a way out on how man and nature conduct a healthy and sustainable long-term development. While ecological compensation is an important mechanism to protect sustainable economic development and ecological environment reconstruction, and is a powerful tool to improve ecosystem service function. The two are closely related, and to develop in contradiction and unity with each other. This article is based on related research of ecosystem service function, summarizing the research on ecological compensation mechanism in China and abroad, and to propose the development enlightenment.
