The coordinated development of territorial spatial functions is the main manifestation of the sustainable utilization of territorial resources. Identifying spatial functions and their coordinated relationship has become an important guarantee for regional coordinated development, and is of great significance to the construction of a sustainable land development and protection pattern. This study constructs a classification and function scoring system for Production-Living-Ecological Spaces (PLES) by using land-use data from Gansu Province in 2000 and 2020, and revises the spatial functions of the land to supplement the deficiencies of existing related researches by combining socio-economic data (GDP, population density) and ecosystem service value data. In the aforementioned works, the Mechanical Equilibrium Model in physics is referenced to explore the coordinated state among territorial spatial functions. The results show that the high-value areas of production function are mainly distributed in the eastern and central areas of the Loess Plateau, with a strip-like distribution in the Hexi Corridor. The high-value areas of living function are consistent with that in the center of the city. The distribution of high-value areas of ecological function is in line with the topographic distribution pattern of mountainous areas in Gansu Province. The distribution pattern of the coordinated state of land space function in Gansu Province is relatively stable from 2000 to 2020. Simultaneously, the functional dominant area and the promotion area are identified according to the deviation of the coordinated degree of production-living-ecological function. After clarifying the functional characteristics of each county, the author proposes a differentiated regulation strategy of territorial spatial function.

AbstractIsatis indigotica planting is the backbone of the medicinal industry in Hexi Oasis, Gansu. In order to solve the problems insufficient water resources and excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer in this area, this paper explored the irrigation and nitrogen levels that can meet the multiple goals of Isatis indigotica. The two-factor split-plot field experiment (2018‒2019) was conducted in Minle County, Gansu Province, China, which contains 9 treatments. There were three levels of irrigation water: W1(low), W2(medium), and W3(high). The soil moisture contents were 60–70%, 70–80%, and 80–90% of the field water-holding capacity, respectively. The nitrogen application rate was classified into three levels, N1(low), N2(medium) and N3(high), which were 150, 200 and 250 kg N/ha, respectively. The standard local irrigation water amount and nitrogen application rate corresponded to W3N3. The results showed that the yield of Isatis indigotica increased first and then decreased with the increase of irrigation amount and nitrogen application rate, the yield of W2N2 is 12.2–17.1% higher than that of W1N1, the yield of W3N3 was 12.1–17.5% lower than that of W2N2. Saving water and reducing nitrogen can improve the quality of Isatis indigotica, compared with W3N3, the indigo, indirubin, (R,S)-epigoitrin and polysaccharides of W2N2 increased by 4.5–5.9%, 2.7–3.1%, 5.2–6.0%, and 1.8–2.1%, respectively. With the increase of nitrogen application rate, the water use efficiency (WUE) first increased and then decreased, as the irrigation volume increases, WUE decreases. Compared with W3N3, the WUE of W2N2 increased by 24.3–27.2%. With the increase of water input, the nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency (NUE) first increased and then decreased, as the nitrogen application rate increases, NUE decreases. Compared with W3N3, the NUE of W2W2 increased by 31.8–34.5%. Therefore, W2N2 can improve quality and increase water and nitrogen utilization efficiency on the basis of ensuring yield.

Abstract Background The saline-alkali soil area accounts for over 1/4-1/5 of the land area in Gansu Province of China, which are mainly distributed in the north of Hexi corridor and Jingtai basin. The unique ecological environment contains unique and diverse microbial resources. The investigation of microbial diversity in saline environment is vital to comprehend the biological mechanisms of saline adaption, develop and utilize microbial resources. Results The Illumina MiSeq sequencing method was practiced to investigate the bacterial diversity and composition in the 5 subtypes and 13 genera of saline-alkali soil in Gansu Province, China. The results from this study show that Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Gemmatimonadetes were the dominant bacterial groups in 13 saline soil. Proteobacteria had the greatest abundance in sulfate-type meadow solonchaks and orthic solonchaks, chloride-type orthic solonchaks and bog solonchaks, sulfate-chloride-type, chloride-sulfate-type, and sulfate-type dry solonchaks. Halobacteria was the dominant bacterial class in soil samples except for sulfate-type meadow solonchaks and orthic solonchaks, chloride-type orthic solonchaks and bog solonchaks. The richness estimators of Ace and Chao 1 and the diversity indices of Shannon and Simpson revealed the least diversity in bacterial community in sulfate-chloride-type orthic solonchaks. Conclusions The sulfate anion was the most important driving force for bacterial composition (17.7%), and the second most influencing factor was pH value (11.7%).

Abstract Increase of atmospheric aerosols has a profound impact on the Earth’s climate. It’s also one of the crucial factors that cuasesd more fequent air pollution events in China. Monthly average Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) from MODIS and UltraViolet Absorbing aerosol Index (UVAI) from OMI during 2011 to 2019 are used to analyse the trend of absorption and total aerosol optical properties over three typical provinces of China, namely Shandong, Gansu and Guangdong provinces. The results show the average annual AOD of the three provinces are all decreasing while UVAI rises during this period. In addition, the monthly variation of AOD and UVAI are also obviously different over these provinces. In particular, the peak value of AOD appeared in July and the trough appeared in December over Shandong Province. And the peak appeared in April over Gansu Province, but AOD decrease slower then over Shandong Province. And there were two peaks in April and August over Guangdong Province. For UVAI, the peaks over Shandong and Gansu provinces both occur in January, while that over Guangdong Province appears in March. Above mentioned differences in the long-term trend and monthly variation of AOD and UVAI might be closely related to the meteorological conditions and aerosol emission of these three provinces.

The investigation of township consumption patterns has become highly significant in order to emphasize the importance of township consumption patterns in economic development and policy formulation. To attain township consumption development in underdeveloped areas is a significant way to meet the general criterion of “rich life” under China’s Rural Revitalization strategy. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the driving forces that contribute to the development of township consumption in underdeveloped areas such as Gansu Province, China, and then scientifically design and implement a strategy for township consumption development in Gansu, all of which are related to the broader interests of rural revitalization. The study used 1233 township data of Gansu Province, China. The study integrated geographically weighted regression (GWR) and a spatial econometric global (SEG) model for data analysis and interpretation. The integration of these two models can comprehensively capture both spatial heterogeneity and spatial independence concurrently. First, we conducted integrated analyses of GWR and SEG models using consistent settings of spatial weight matrix elements, with GWR focusing on spatial heterogeneity and SEG models on spatial spillover. Second, the permanent resident population, the number of financial institution outlets, the types of townships, and the characteristics of townships had a substantial significant effect on the development of township consumption in Gansu, China. In addition, the ratio of residents with access to basic medical insurance was found to be negatively significant. The revitalization strategy for township consumption in Gansu Province, China should prioritize increasing the permanent resident population of townships, accelerating the development of township urbanization, accelerating the construction of township consumption infrastructures, and strengthening financial support from township financial institutions.

Yuan-tsung Chen

To advance her career, Yuan-tsung was obliged to demonstrate her loyalty to the Party by doing whatever it wanted her to do, and so in late 1950, she went to do land reform work in a poverty-stricken farming village, known as Dragon’s Village, outside the Great Wall in northwestern Gansu Province. Six months later, she returned to Beijing, and at a weekend party, an old Nankai schoolmate, Dora Zhang, introduced her to Jack Chen, an overseas Chinese who, along with his father, had been an early supporter of the Communists. At the party, they waltzed to the music of the “Blue Danube.” She was not as impressed by Chen’s political pedigree as by his library, which included banned works by writers like Marcel Proust and D. H. Lawrence. They talked about these “decadent writers” and fell in love.
