The ecological value encapsulated in the term “spiritual ecology” is drawing more and more attention from ethnology, folklore, ecology, and other related disciplines. The custom of respecting and pacifying forest spirits has distinct regional and ethnic characteristics, and many scholars have discovered samples from different studies around the world. Qingyuan County, located in the mountainous region of southwest Zhejiang, is a very typical case of the practice of respecting and pacifying forest spirits. The mushroom-cultivation technology invented by the chthonic people there more than 900 years ago made this the global birthplace of artificial mushroom cultivation. The Qingyuan Forest–Mushroom Co-cultivation System (QFMCS) has been listed as an important agricultural heritage system by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, Beijing, China and a candidate project by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Rome, Italy for Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). Additionally, the QFMCS is currently an important part of the Baishanzu National Park under construction. The authors made an in-depth field study in the mountainous areas of Qingyuan and used theoretical methods of ecology, anthropology, and folklore to reveal the function spiritual ecology plays in ecological conservation, forest protection, identity, and the maintenance of community interests. In the “traditional-modern” transformation of Qingyuan County, the practice of respecting and pacifying the Spirits is still being propagated, resulting in expansion and social cohesion.

Nymphaea hybrid, a precious water lily, is a widely-cultivated aquatic flower with high ornamental, economic, medicinal, and ecological value; it blooms recurrently and emits a strong fragrance. In the present study, in order to understand the volatile components of N. hybrid and its relationship with petals structure characteristics, the morphologies and anatomical structures of the flower petals of N. hybrid were investigated, and volatile compounds emitted from the petals were identified. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to describe petal structures, and the volatile constituents were collected using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) fibers and analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the density and degree of protrusion and the number of plastids and osmiophilic matrix granules in the petals play key roles in emitting the fragrance. There were distinct differences in the components and relative contents of volatile compounds among the different strains of N. hybrid. In total, 29, 34, 39, and 43 volatile compounds were detected in the cut flower petals of the blue-purple type (Nh-1), pink type (Nh-2), yellow type (Nh-3) and white type (Nh-4) of N. hybrid at the flowering stage, with total relative contents of 96.78%, 97.64%, 98.56%, and 96.15%, respectively. Analyses of these volatile components indicated that alkenes, alcohols, and alkanes were the three major types of volatile components in the flower petals of N. hybrid. The predominant volatile compounds were benzyl alcohol, pentadecane, trans-α-bergamotene, (E)-β-farnesene, and (6E,9E)-6,9-heptadecadiene, and some of these volatile compounds were terpenes, which varied among the different strains. Moreover, on the basis of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), the N. hybrid samples were divided into four groups: alcohols were the most important volatile compounds for Nh-4 samples; esters and aldehydes were the predominant volatiles in Nh-3 samples; and ketones and alkenes were important for Nh-2 samples. These compounds contribute to the unique flavors and aromas of the four strains of N. hybrid.

A rich ecological value area within East Kalimantan, Kutai Kartanegara, represents a specific-particular ecological system of an island in a tropical country. Covered by the evergreen forest in the past, it has a closed-loop system formed naturally due to its metabolism. This system maintains the high diversity of nature which provides abundant resources both renewable and non-renewable. Owing to its ecological system value, the earth has been numerous beneficial the economic sector both for country and region for decades. Let say coal is one of the attractive resources for the energy sector, which has been contributing over 80% of the GDRP of Kutai Kartanegara in 2010.

The intensification and specialisation of agriculture has contributed to farmland wildlife decline, including farmland birds. Grey partridge is a farmland species which has experienced a significant decline across Europe in recent decades. Chick survival rate is a key determinant of grey partridge population change and depends essentially on the availability of insect food. In this study, ground-dwelling and canopy-dwelling insects were collected using pitfall trapping and sweep netting methodologies, respectively, on different strip types in an area established for the conservation of grey partridge. The aim was to further our understanding of the value of different vegetated strip types in providing insect-rich habitats for grey partridge chicks. Overall, wildflower strip (WS) provided the greatest insect abundance. Significantly more ground-dwelling insects were found on WS, natural regeneration (NS) and leguminous strips (LS) than on grass strip (GS). Canopy-dwelling insects were also significantly more abundant on WS compared to all other strip types. This study highlights that WSs may represent important habitats in providing insect-rich food for grey partridge chicks and sowing these strips may therefore play a key role in decreasing chick mortality and supporting grey partridge conservation. It also demonstrates that other different vegetated strip types may still provide strip-specific insect taxa, in addition to other valuable resources. This study recommends a complex mosaic of different strip types to provide key resources for grey partridge, such as insect and plant food, nesting habitats and overwinter cover.

The Cycladic landscape is characterized by landforms of natural beauty and rarity. Landforms resulting from differential erosion, weathering, tectonics, drainage network, sea level changes, and depositional processes can contribute to the development of geotourism in the area. This can be achieved by supporting conservation, protection and promotion of the geo-environment and nature, educating students, residents, and visitors. The aim of this work is to develop an inventory of the main geomorphosites of Paros and Naxos islands by assessing their scientific and additional values, using qualitative and quantitative criteria. Our results show that, besides the high scientific interest of the 75 geomorphosites, most are also characterized by a high ecological value and can potentially lead to a significant increase in the islands’ tourism. The results of this work aim at raise awareness on the geomorphological heritage of central Cyclades and provide a basis for their promotion, protection, and management.

Aims: The spring habitats of Central Europe are insular biotopes of high ecological value. Although subject to severe exploitation pressures, they do not yet have a comprehensive protection status in Switzerland. Contributing to this challenge is the controversy involved with their syntaxonomic classification. In the context of the development of a regional conservation strategy and the establishment of a national inventory of Swiss springs, we carried out a regional survey of spring vegetation and aimed to translate this into a classification system. Study area: Montane and subalpine zones of Parc Ela (Grisons, Switzerland). Methods: We selected 20 springs to cover different regions, elevations and bedrock types within the park. In each of them we recorded complete vascular plant and bryophyte composition as well as a range of environmental variables in three 1-m² plots that were placed to reflect the heterogeneity within the spring. After running an unsupervised classification with modified TWINSPAN, the distinguished vegetation units were characterized in terms of diagnostic species, species richness and environmental variables and placed within the syntaxonomic system. Results: Species richness was high (total species 264, mean 21.7 species in 1 m2). The two most important environmental gradients of the ordination were elevation/water conductivity and insolation/water pH/soil reaction EIV. We distinguished seven communities within two main groups. Conclusions: All unshaded springs, including those over siliceous bedrock, could be assigned to a broadly defined Cratoneurion. The petrifying springs were not strongly distinguishable floristically from other base-rich springs. The forest springs, although often not clearly differentiated from their unshaded counterparts, could be provisionally divided into the alliances Caricion remotae and Lycopodo europaei-Cratoneurion commutati. As there is a certain threat to these habitats in the park due to anthropogenic influence, protection measures are recommended, most importantly the appropriate management of alpine pastures. Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis (G. lemaneiformis) is an important marine red macroalgae with high economic and ecological value all over the world. To date, global warming is a key issue that has a great impact on all living organisms, such as macroalgae. L-arginine (Arg) is a precursor of nitric oxide (NO) and polyamines (PAs), which can induce stress defense responses in land plants. However, its role in inducing algae resistance at high temperature (HT) is unclear. In this study, G. lemaneiformis thalli were treated with different concentrations of Arg to investigate its effect and the mechanism on the tolerance of G. lemaneiformis against HT stress. It turned out that exogenous Arg significantly alleviated the HT-induced oxidative damage as indicated by a markedly decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Notably, Arg remarkably improved the relative growth rate (RGR) and phycobiliprotein (PBP) contents of G. lemaneiformis at HT. Moreover, Arg significantly elevated the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), to efficiently scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, it also promoted the accumulation of free amino acids (AAs) as compared to those in the control treatment (CK) group under HT conditions. To investigate the mechanism of G. lemaneiformis to Arg, a transcriptome analysis was performed and revealed 1,414 and 3,825 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in Arg-treated groups as compared to CK groups at 24 and 48 h of HT stress, respectively. Results showed that Arg significantly upregulated the expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes, heat shock proteins, and triggered transcription factors (TFs) signaling during HT stress. Moreover, Arg enhanced the DEGs involved in arginine and proline (Pro) metabolism, AAs biosynthesis, glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. These results may help in understanding the role of Arg in G. lemaneiformis resistance to HT and provide a practical viewpoint for obtaining heat-tolerant G. lemaneiformis to further promote the development of the cultivated seaweed industry in the future.

Ecological compensation (EC) is an important way to solve the imbalance of cross-regional economic development and realize regional coordinated development. How to quantify the standard of EC has become a hot research topic. Firstly, this paper selected the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR) as the study area, and constructed a cross-regional spillover ecological value measurement model based on the extended emergy analysis. From the perspective of the “ecology–economy–society” complex ecosystem, this paper used emergy to reflect the social, economic, and ecological function and service value of the TGRR, and estimated the ecosystem emergy supply and consumption in the TGRR. Then, comparing the watershed ecosystem emergy supply and consumption, we can judge the status of the ecological surplus and deficit of the TGRR, and transfer the spillover ecological emergy to spillover ecological value (SEV) by using the emergy currency ratio (ECR). Finally, combined with different actual payment level coefficient, we can obtain a relatively objective and robust compensation standard. The results show that the SEV of the TGRR in 2016 is 2.70 × 1011 USD, which indicates that the TGRR is in the state of ecological surplus. The TGRR should get EC about 2.85 × 1011 USD according to the ECR. Based on the research results, it is suggested to expand the transfer payment to the TGRR. At the same time, it is suggested to formulate different ecological compensation standard (ECS) according to regional differences, which has important practical significance to establish the allocation standard of EC, and provides a typical case basis for other large reservoir areas or typical reservoir areas.

Abstract Background Stipagrostis pennata is distributed in the mobile and semi-mobile sand dunes which can adapt well to extreme environments such as drought and high temperature. It is a pioneer plant species with potential for stabilizing sand dunes and ecological restoration. It can settle on moving sand dunes earlier than other desert plants. It can effectively improve the stability of sand dunes and help more plants settle down and increase plant diversity. However, despite its important ecological value, the genetic resources available for this species are limited. Results We used single-molecule real-time sequencing technology to obtain the complete full-length transcriptome of Stipagrostis pennata, including 90,204 unigenes with an average length of 2624 bp. In addition, the 5436 transcription factors identified in these unigenes are rich in stress resistance genes, such as MYB-related, C3H, bHLH, GRAS and HSF, etc., which may play a role in adapting to desert drought and strong wind stress. Intron retention events are abundant alternative splicing events. Stipagrostis pennata has experienced stronger positive selection, accelerating the fixation of advantageous variants. Thirty-eight genes, such as CPP/TSO1-like gene, have evolved rapidly and may play a role in material transportation, flowering and seed formation. Conclusions The present study captures the complete full-length transcriptome of Stipagrostis pennata and reveals its rapid evolution. The desert adaptation in Stipagrostis pennata is reflected in the regulation of gene expression and the adaptability of gene function. Our findings provide a wealth of knowledge for the evolutionary adaptability of desert grass species.
