Dear Editor, The Colombian government declared the quarantine for all the population since 25th March, 2020 as a measure to mitigate the expansion of COVID-19 in the country. Nevertheless, this restrictive measure showed early some opposite consequences to its purpose. As observed in other countries, the restriction measure caused a mass purchase of products, formation of crowds in grocery, department stores and local markets. The fear of shortage also caused exhaustion of products, long journeys and accumulation of large numbers of people in stores, bank offices and ATMs.

Autoionization and dielectronic attachment are usually omitted from rate equations for the non–LTE average–atom model, causing systematic errors in predicted ionization states and electronic populations for atoms in hot dense plasmas produced by laser irradiation of solid targets. We formulate a method by which dielectronic recombination can be included in average–atom calculations without conflict with the principle of detailed balance. The essential new feature in this extended average atom model is a treatment of strong correlations of electron populations induced by the dielectronic attachment process.

AbstractKindler syndrome (KS) is a rare photosensitivity disorder with autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. It is characterized by acral blistering in infancy and childhood, progressive poikiloderma, skin atrophy, abnormal photosensitivity, and gingival fragility. Besides these major features, many minor presentations have also been reported in the literature. We are reporting two cases with atypical features of the syndrome and a new feature of recurrent neutropenia. Whole exome sequencing analysis was done using next-generation sequencing which detected a homozygous loss-of-function (LOF) variant of FERMT1 in both patients. The variant is classified as a pathogenic variant as per the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines. Homozygous LOF variants of FERMT1 are a common mechanism of KS and as such confirm the diagnosis of KS in our patients even though the presentation was atypical.

Examination of (35) samples of spices obtained from local markets for the purposes of isolating and diagnosing fungi growing on them. Anine isolates belonging to 13 different types of fungi were diagnosed by the standard dilution method with three replications, and it has been observed that the most samples from which the fungi were isolated is ginger. It was found that the most isolated species of fungi are Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Rizupes spp. A rare colony of fungi was observed, which indicates contamination of the spices under study with the fungus. The present study aims to identify the potential risks of the presence of fungi in spices and what may result from mycotoxins that may be the cause of many chronic diseases as a result of using these spices in large quantities. The study recommends limiting the use of contaminated spices, especially ginger, in preparing food and its uses, in addition to other types such as cloves, black and white pepper, and other types of spices found in the local markets, especially the expired ones.

Abstract Commercial databases containing images of tire tread patterns are currently used by product designers, forensic specialists and product application personnel to identify whether a given tread pattern matches an existing tire. Currently, this pattern matching process is almost entirely manual, requiring visual searches of extensive libraries of tire tread patterns. Our work explores a first step toward automating this pattern matching process by building on feature analysis techniques from computer vision and image processing to develop a new method for extracting and classifying features from tire tread patterns and automatically locating candidate matches from a database of existing tread pattern images. Our method begins with a selection of tire tread images obtained from multiple sources (including manufacturers' literature, Web site images, and Tire Guides, Inc.), which are preprocessed and normalized using Two-Dimensional Fast Fourier Transforms (2D-FFT). The results of this preprocessing are feature-rich images that are further analyzed using feature extraction algorithms drawn from research in computer vision. A new, feature extraction algorithm is developed based on the geometry of the 2D-FFT images of the tire. The resulting FFT-based analysis allows independent classification of the tire images along two dimensions, specifically by separating “rib” and “lug” features of the tread pattern. Dimensionality of (0,0) indicates a smooth treaded tire with no pattern; dimensionality of (1,0) and (0,1) are purely rib and lug tires; and dimensionality of (1,1) is an all-season pattern. This analysis technique allows a candidate tire to be classified according to the features of its tread pattern, and other tires with similar features and tread pattern classifications can be automatically retrieved from the database.
