Building information modeling (BIM) is an innovative approach that is widely used to overcome various challenges in the construction industry. Current BIM implementation mainly focuses on information management, but puts very limited effort on knowledge. That is, the current BIM practice is information-centered, but it is not mature enough to generate and capture experiential knowledge. In addition, knowledge management (KM) is limitedly adopted for BIM implementation. Based on this paper's rigorous literature review as well as a survey questionnaire, nine knowledge enablers and 52 knowledge enabler factors for BIM implementation (KEFBIs) are identified. In this paper, we deploy ISM fuzzy MICMAC to identify and classify the key KEFBIs that influence BIM implementation by contractors. The results can guide contractors to avoid difficulties while adopting BIM so that they can plan and allocate their resources optimally.

Construction industry is one of the most information-intensive industries. It is also fragmented and complex which often causes poor information management. As a result, it has serious adverse effects for its efficiency and productivity. Internet technologies have now been regarded potential in resolving the issues. This paper aims at discussing the chance that Internet technologies can provide. It also further discusses some possible applications and tools that can be integrated to improve the information management in construction.

Background: The South African construction industry is noted to be one of the most popular industries heavily dependent on projects. Calls exist for research that ascertains not just how entrepreneurs act as project managers but also the evaluation of project success and the role information management plays in all this.Objectives: The aim of this study was to understand the views and experiences of entrepreneurs in how: (1) project management success is conceptualised, and (2) the role that information management played to this within a South African construction industry space.Method: The study adopts a qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews to generate narratives and themes around how: (1) project management success is conceptualised, and (2) the role that information management played to this. A sample of 15 entrepreneurs working within the construction industry was used for this study.Results: Based on the analysis of the narratives of the 15 entrepreneurs, project success was conceptualised mainly along three themes. Firstly, project success was about keeping the customer happy. Secondly, project success in the construction industry meant meeting the set targets, especially those of a financial nature. Finally, project success was about channelling internal synergies to realise external gains. Further, the 15 entrepreneurs espoused one main sub-theme around the role of information management to this conceptualisation of project success. This posits the role of information management to be a currency in effective decision-making.Conclusion: The study concluded by focusing on the implications and recommendations based on the identified themes.

This paper reviews BIM concepts, with a particular focus on its applicability and uptake within the business processes in the construction industry. An exploratory study is being carried out to examine the current state of BIM practices using the instrument of survey questionnaire and literature review. The partial findings from an on-going survey show that, the inevitable need for organisations to reengineer existing processes in order to fully capitalise on BIM potentials is acknowledged by the industry participants. BIM implementation in the business processes reveal that organisations are attuned to the significance of Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) for BIM development in their practices. However, more efforts are still needed to educate people regarding culture change so that BPR is recognised as a platform for successful BIM implementation in the construction sector. The paper concludes with proposing a need of business information management through BIM adoption that will enable organisations to take advantage of BIM investments.

Blockchain provides a secure decentralized information management system that can solve many common problems facing the construction industry. The loose structure of the construction industry, the way that public and private projects are tendered, and the supply chain system it uses for material and service delivery provide unique challenges and problems. New information technology management systems such as BIM and RFID are used to address some of these issues, though not completely. Blockchain technology can be used to further improve the information management systems in construction, provide more automation and mitigate many possible legal conflicts by default. Implementation of blockchain technology in the construction industry can also result in the use of smart contracts with fewer administrative struggles, improve the flow of the project, material, and service delivery, and increase the security and currentness of BIM or project documents. This study aims to explore the applications of blockchain technology in improving the construction industry's information management systems. It is concluded that not only the blockchain technology has potential in addressing some of the common problems in the construction industry but also it is adaptable to the construction industry structure and the way it is practiced. Thus, blockchain technology is a viable option for adaptation in the construction industry.

Though Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been proposed as a lean solution for the construction industry, its implementation would itself benefit from a proactive lean approach. This paper aims to study the implementation of BIM in Facilities Management (FM), and explores the synergistic potential of a lean approach. This was carried out through an integrative review of existing literature. BIM-FM implementation was categorized into three phases, which were analyzed to uncover the challenges and barriers faced in each; and explore the potential of a proactive lean approach to counter them. A number of key findings emerged. The existence of inefficiencies and variability in information management leading to an increase in labor hours was identified as a persistent problem in BIM-FM implementation. This had been derived by systematically mapping the challenges to their resultant effects on business processes based on the seven identified wastes in business. The paper provides both academics and practitioners with a collated list of issues based on a new way of examining BIM in FM implementation. It discusses the need for and synergistic potential of lean concepts to reduce information and time waste.
