While all Southern states share historical connections in culture and geography, North Carolina is in many ways unique. From the Outer Banks to the industrial Piedmont to the High Country of the west, the state has a unique mix of regions and cultures. Music figures prominently in North Carolina, and its musicians reflect the diversity of the geography. The state’s earliest musicians were the Native Americans, especially the Cherokee, whose music has been recorded and studied in some detail. European-American music has flourishedsince colonial days: in Salem, the Moravian church has sponsored the development of sacred choral and instrumental music for over 200 years. In the early twentieth century a distinct African American blues style originated from the textile mill and tobacco towns of the Piedmont region.

Charles Cleveland “Charlie” Poole was a banjo-playing mill laborer who lived an eventful life before passing at age 39 from one alcohol binge too many. He was arguably the most important musician to emerge from the stringbands populating mill towns across the North Carolina Piedmont -- a working-class hero as well as an important crossroads figure in the 1920s evolution of old-time music into what became bluegrass and country music, recording songs that remain bluegrass-festival standards to this day. And yet he has never been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

In the shadow of alternative rock, another generation went back to country music with a punk edge. In the 1990s it was called alternative country, and North Carolina had the highest and best concentration of such bands in America -- from old-timers like Red Clay Ramblers and Southern Culture on the Skids to newcomers like Backsliders and 6 String Drag. That has persisted into the present-day Americana age with bands including Hiss Golden Messenger, American Aquarium and Mandolin Orange.
