Urban economies in Germany. Cluster potential and global interconnections. Urban economies are the leading locational centres of corporate headquarters, advanced producer services, the media sector, research and development, particular “knowledge-intensive” activity branches of the economy and innovative industrial growth sectors. The urban regions might be characterized as heterogenous agglomerations of economic activities, which include a number of sub-economies with different functions and forms of organisation. The urban regions’ economic potential reveils specific differences with regard to the large urban economic centres in West- and East-Germany. The different positions of particular urban economic centres in Germany and Europe as ancoring points of global firms’ organizational networks are being indicated with regard to global service providers and global media firms, emphasizing the global interconnections as an important development factor particularly in the metropoles of the urban system.

Diverse urban theories discuss how economic processes shape conceptions of a city, but less research focuses on how pragmatic situations of urban life contribute to the characterisation of cities. We argue that pragmatic justifications reify socially constructed meanings of cities by creating a “spirit of urban capitalism.” This framework conceives of two spirits: the market city, which aligns with neoliberal assumptions, and the people city, which foregrounds a resident-focused model. Using case studies of Copenhagen and Houston, we showcase how these conceptions of cities are justified by elites and residents, and thereby build empirical scaffolding connecting urban economies and cultures.

The article presents a new methodology for estimating gross urban product in Russian cities under extremely low statistical data availability about urban economies performance. Gross urban product estimates provide new analytical instruments for assessing disparities in economic development between more than 1000 Russian cities and other areas, cities’ contribution to GDP and for comparing indicators of Russian cities with these of foreign countries.
