Abstract The paper provides a detailed examination of reflexive strategies in the Kuznetsovo dialect of Hill Mari (Mari, Uralic) filling in an existing gap in the description of anaphoric elements in Uralic languages. Firstly, I focus on simple lexical reflexives derived from the stem (ə̈)škə̈-. Having examined their morphosyntactic and binding properties, I adopt several typological classifications and approach the Hill Mari data from a cross-linguistic perspective comparing them to anaphors in other Uralic languages. Secondly, I consider other reflexive strategies employed in Uralic languages, such as complex (reduplicative) reflexive pronouns and reflexive detransitivization of a predicate, and I demonstrate that these scenarios are unavailable in the variety of Hill Mari under discussion.

Background Ca2+ plays an important role in signal transduction and anesthetic mechanisms. To date, no one has observed a direct effect of volatile anesthetics on a Ca(2+)-binding protein. We therefore examined the effects of halothane and isoflurane on the Ca(2+)-binding properties of bovine brain calmodulin. Methods The fluorescence emission of calmodulin was obtained over a range of Ca2+ concentrations (10(-7)-10(-4)M) in the presence and absence of halothane and isoflurane. The intrinsic tyrosine fluorescence of calmodulin was measured at an excitation wavelength of 280 nm and an emission wavelength of 320 nm. Fluorescence measurements were carried out in 50 mM hydroxyethylpiperazineethane sulfonic acid, 100 mM KC1, and 2 mM ethyleneglycol-bis-(beta-aminoethyl ether) tetraacetic acid at pH 7.0 and 37 degrees C. Experiments were performed in polytetrafluorethylene-sealed cuvettes so that the volatile anesthetic concentrations remained constant. The titration data were analyzed in two ways. The data were fit to the Hill equation by using nonlinear regression analysis to derive the Hill coefficient and the dissociation constant. The data were also analyzed by two-way analysis of variance with multiple comparisons to determine statistically significant effects. Volatile anesthetic concentrations were measured by gas chromatography. Results The presence of volatile anesthetics altered the Ca(2+)-binding affinity of calmodulin in a dose-dependent fashion. At 0.57% (0.25 mM) halothane and 1.7% (0.66 mM) isoflurane, the affinity of calmodulin for Ca2+ relative to control was decreased. However, at higher concentrations of both anesthetics, the affinity for Ca2+ was increased. When the volatile anesthetics were allowed to evaporate from the experimental solutions, the observed rightward shift of the calmodulin-Ca2+ binding curve for Ca2+ at low concentrations of the anesthetics returned to the control position. The leftward shift seen at high concentrations of the anesthetics was irreversible after evaporation of 8.7% (3.3 mM) isoflurane and 5.7% (2.5 mM) halothane. Conclusions These data demonstrate a complex interaction of two hydrophobic volatile anesthetics with calmodulin. A biphasic effect was observed both for halothane and for isoflurane. Calmodulin, an EF-hand Ca(2+)-binding protein, undergoes a conformational shift when binding Ca2+, exposing several hydrophobic residues. These residues may be sites at which the anesthetics act.

Polyoxymethylene (POM) crystals grow inside trioxane crystals which have been irradiated and heated to a temperature slightly below their melting point. Figure 1 shows a low magnification electron micrograph of a group of such POM crystals. Detailed examination at higher magnification showed that three distinct types of POM crystals grew in a typical sample. The three types of POM crystals were distinguished by the direction that the polymer chain axis in each crystal made with respect to the threefold axis of the trioxane crystal. These polyoxymethylene crystals were described previously.At low magnifications the three types of polymer crystals appeared as slender rods. One type had a hexagonal cross section and the other two types had rectangular cross sections, that is, they were ribbonlike.

A (111) phosphorus-doped Si specimen, thinned to give a TEM foil of thickness ∼ 150nm, contained a dislocation network lying on the (111) plane. The dislocation lines were along the three <211> directions and their total Burgers vectors,ḇt, were of the type , each dislocation being of edge character. TEM examination under proper weak-beam conditions seemed initially to show the standard contrast behaviour for such dislocations, indicating some dislocation segments were undissociated (contrast A), while other segments were dissociated to give two Shockley partials separated by approximately 6nm (contrast B) . A more detailed examination, however, revealed that some segments exhibited a third and anomalous contrast behaviour (contrast C), interpreted here as being due to a new dissociation not previously reported. Experimental results obtained for a dislocation along [211] with for the six <220> type reflections using (g,5g) weak-beam conditions are summarised in the table below, together with the relevant values.

The use of fura-2 as an intracellular calcium indicator is complicated by problems of rapid dye leakage and intracellular compartmentalization which is due to a probenecid sensitive anion transporter. In addition there is increasing evidence for localized microdomains of high calcium signals which may not be faithfully reported by fura-2.We have developed a new family of fura-2 analogs aimed at addressing some of these problems. These new indicators are based on a modified bapta which can be readily derivatized to produce fura-2 analogs with a variety of new properties. The modifications do not affect the chromophore and have little impact on the spectral and metal binding properties of the indicator. One of these new derivatives known as FPE3 is a zwitterionic analog of fura-2 that can be loaded into cells as an acetoxymethyl ester and whose retention in cells is much improved. The improved retention of FPE3 is important for both cuvettebased measurements of cell suspensions and for calcium imaging.

Purpose The shortage of doctor of philosophy (PhD)–level applicants to fill academic and research positions in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) programs calls for a detailed examination of current CSD PhD educational practices and the generation of creative solutions. The intended purposes of the article are to encourage CSD faculty to examine their own PhD program practices and consider the perspectives of recent CSD PhD graduates in determining the need for possible modifications. Method The article describes the results of a survey of 240 CSD PhD graduates and their perceptions of the challenges and facilitators to completing a PhD degree; the quality of their preparation in research, teaching, and job readiness; and ways to improve PhD education. Results Two primary themes emerged from the data highlighting the need for “matchmaking.” The first time point of needed matchmaking is prior to entry among students, mentors, and expectations as well as between aspects of the program that can lead to students' success and graduation. The second important matchmaking need is between the actual PhD preparation and the realities of the graduates' career expectations, and those placed on graduates by their employers. Conclusions Within both themes, graduate's perspectives and suggestions to help guide future doctoral preparation are highlighted. The graduates' recommendations could be used by CSD PhD program faculty to enhance the quality of their program and the likelihood of student success and completion.
