Seasonal patterns in habitat use by the harvest mouse (Micromys minutus) and other small mammals

Abstract The ecology of the harvest mouse (Micromys minutus) is poorly understood, partly because it is a difficult species to monitor. It is commonly associated with reedbeds, where evidence suggests that it experiences strong seasonal fluctuations in abundance. However, it is unknown whether these fluctuations are caused by real changes in population size, or by movement between habitats. This study investigated seasonal changes in population size and habitat use by harvest mice, and other small mammal species, by trapping the reedbed and three associated habitat types: woodland, pasture and arable land. A sampling effort of 9887 trap bouts across nine months, resulted in 70 captures of harvest mice, as well as wood mice (N = 1022), bank voles (N = 252), field voles (N = 9), common shrews (N = 86) and pygmy shrews (N = 7). The reedbed was the habitat with the most captures and highest diversity. Harvest mice were caught exclusively in the reedbed at the beginning of autumn. Wood mice and bank voles experienced fluctuations in population numbers and wood mice also showed seasonal variation in habitat use. Our study supports the idea that harvest mice undergo extreme seasonal fluctuations in abundance in reedbeds, but these do not appear to be related to changes in habitat use.

AbstractThe wildcat Felis silvestris is a protected species in Turkey but the lack of information on its status is an obstacle to conservation initiatives. To assess the status of the species we interviewed local forestry and wildlife personnel and conducted field surveys in selected sites in northern, eastern and western Turkey during 2000–2007. In January–May 2006 we surveyed for the wildcat using 16 passive infrared-trigged camera traps in Yaylacı k Research Forest, a 50-km2 forest patch in Yenice Forest in northern Turkey. A total sampling effort of 1,200 camera trap days over 40 km2 yielded photo-captures of eight individual wildcats over five sampling occasions. Using the software MARK to estimate population size the closed capture–recapture model M0, which assumes a constant capture probability among all occasions and individuals, best fitted the capture history data. The wildcat population size in Yaylacı k Research Forest was estimated to be 11 (confidence interval 9–23). Yenice Forest is probably one of the most important areas for the long-term conservation of the wildcat as it is the largest intact forest habitat in Turkey with little human presence, and without human settlements, and with a high diversity of prey species. However, it has been a major logging area and is not protected. The future of Yenice Forest and its wildcat population could be secured by granting this region a protection status and enforcing environmental legislation.

We conducted a short study in the Bojonawi Private Nature Reserve (Vichada department, Colombia) in three types of aquatic macrohabitats to characterize habitat use, population structure and reproductive phenology of Podocnemis vogli during one reproductive season. We also reevaluated the degree of sexual dimorphism in this species. To maximize capture rates, we used three methods: funnel traps, trammel nets, and manual capture. Only the funnel traps could be used in a standardized manner in all three macrohabitats. We captured 149 individuals in all age/size classes and obtained 11 recaptures. Since we were able to standardize sampling effort with the funnel traps in all macrohabitats, we compared habitat use and class structure among habitats during this reproductive season. There were no significant differences among the three macrohabitats in terms of relative abundances or size class distributions, but sex ratios differed, with an excess of males in the river and females in the lagoon. As with other congeners, P. vogli is a sexually dimorphic species where females attain larger sizes. In this study we documented that pre-cloacal tail length and nail length on the anterior third toe are the most useful secondary sexual characteristics for sexing subadult and adult individuals. Some females larger than 22 cm straight-line carapace length had calcified eggs in their oviducts. This species is abundant within the reserve and appears to be a habitat generalist, including the use of large rivers. More extensive and intensive monitoring is needed to document specific class survivorship rates, detectabilities and population dynamics.

Abstract Reithrodontomys mexicanus (Saussure, 1860) is a cricetid rodent commonly called the Mexican harvest mouse and is one of 24 recognized species in the genus. It has grooved upper incisors distinctive of Reithrodontomys, and a medium to relatively large size, with tail longer than head and body; dorsal pelage varies from brown to cinnamon orange. It is distributed from Mexico to Nicaragua and in the northwestern region of South America. It occupies different habitats including humid pine-oak forests, cloud forests, and deciduous forests at elevations from about 1,000 to 3,800 m. R. mexicanus is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, although information about population size throughout its distribution range is unknown.

Banding records were used to estimate the size of non-breeding winter flocks of the pied currawong, Strepera graculina, at Albury, N.S.W., during 1964 and 1965. A new method of analysing mark-recapture data is compared with conventional methods, and it is shown that the flocks contained between 500 and 1000 birds in both years. In 1964, the new method provided information on emigration and immigration that was not apparent when the data were treated in the conventional way. The new approach considers the common situation in which a population (flock) is sampled continuously by catching one member (bird) at a time, marking (banding) it, and returning it to the population. For closed populations, the population size was estimated by a method involving cumulative catch and recapture data. Subsequently, this method was successfully tested by simulating the sampling of 20 "populations" of 10,000 random numbers with a computer. The method also provided a simple way of controlling sampling effort based on recapture data to obtain any desired precision in the estimation of population size.

AbstractSynura lapponica Skuja, a freshwater colonial flagellate (Synurophyceae, Stramenopila), has been reported for the first time in the Czech Republic. This study evaluates the ecological requirements of the species, and includes a survey of the literature. Although S. lapponica has been reported thus far only in the Northern Hemisphere, the probability of its bipolar distribution is relatively high (22%). Distribution is probably ecologically determined, water temperature (correlated with latitude or seasonal fluctuations), and lower pH seem to be the primary environmental variables. A local vs. global ratio reflects, to a certain extent, the degree of sampling effort expended in the studied area, but a considerable increase in the number of revealed taxa was apparent when the area was expanded.
