On heating the tetraethylammonium salt of [IrCl6]2- with trifluoroacetic acid the edge sharing bioctahedral anion [Ir2Cl10]2- is formed, the IR and Raman spectra of which are assigned according to point group D2h. Normal coordinate analyses, based on a general valence force field, for [M2X10]2-, M = Re, Os, Ir, Pt; X = Cl, Br have been performed, resulting in a good agreement of the calculated frequencies with the bands observed in the IR and Raman spectra. Due to the stronger bonding of the terminal as compared to the bridging ligands, the valence force constants fd(MXt) are significantly higher than fd(MXb).

Methylthiosilanes of the type (CH3)nH3−nSiSCH3, n = 0–3, and (CH3)HSi(SCH3)2 have been prepared. Their ir and Raman spectra were recorded and assigned. The assignments were supported by normal coordinate analyses based on a modified valence force field.

Abstract Infrared and Raman spectra of solid and dissolved S414N4 and of solid S415N4 have been recorded and assigned in accordance with the molecular point group D2d. 22 of the 28 fundamental vibrations of both molecules have been identified and used to calculate force constants applying a modified Urey-Bradley force field with 9 independent constants. Good agreement between observed and calculated wavenumbers was obtained, and both Urey-Bradley and valence force constants are given. The results indicate that-S4N4 basically contains eight SN single bonds and two extremely weak SS bonds.

Abstract The orange-red Tc2(O2CCH3)4Br2 has been prepared for the first time by reaction of [Tc2Br8]2- with glacial acetic acid and acetic anhydride. The IR and Raman spectra have been recorded at 80 K and are compared with those of the analogous compounds Tc2(O2CCH3)4Cl2, Re2(O2CCH3)4Cl2 and Re2(O2CCH3)4Br2. The assignment according to the point group D4h is supported by normal coordinate analysis based on a general valence force field. The quadruple M - M bond is stabilized by the bridging acetato and destabilized by the axial halogeno ligands. The valence force constants fd(MM) are determined to 3,96-4,08 mdyn/Å. The interaction constants fdd(MM/MX), fdd(MM/MO) and fdα (MM/MMO) are about three times higher for the technetates as compared with the rhenates. The stronger interaction between opposite bonds in the equatorial ligand sphere is revealed by the stretching interaction constants fdd', which are about two times higher than fdd for M - O bonds at right angles. The strong coupling of the ring co-ordinates implies extensive mixing of the M - O valence and deformation modes. The electronic spectra of Tc2(O2CCH3)4X2, agree with those of the corresponding Re compounds.

The IR and Raman spectra of the ten bromo-iodo-rhenates(IV) [ReBrnI6-n]2-, n = 0 -6 , including the geometrical isomers for n - 2,3,4, have been recorded at 80 K. The vibrational spectra are completely assigned according to point groups Oh, D4h, C4v, C3v, and C2v, as supported by normal coordinate analyses based on a general valence force field. Due to the different mms-influences Br < I in asymmetric axes Br•-Re-I', the Re-I' bonds are strengthened and the Re-Br• bonds are weakened, as indicated by valence force constants, for Re-I' on average 8,5% higher and for Os-Br• 8,3% lower, as compared with the values calculated for symmetric I-Re-I and Br-Re-Br axes, respectively

The mixed chloro-bromo-rhodates(III) [RhClnBr6-n]3-, n = 1-5, have been separated for the first time by ion exchange chromatography on diethylaminoethyl-cellulose. Due to the stronger trans-effect of Br, as compared with Cl, on treatment of [RhBr6]3- with conc. HCl nearly pure cis/fac-isomers for n = 2, 3, 4 are formed. The reaction of [RhCl6]3- with conc. HBr yields mixtures of the cis/trans-isomers for n = 2, 4, which cannot be separated, but mer-[RhCl3Br3]3 is formed stereospecifically. The IR and Raman spectra of all isolated mixed ligand complexes are completely assigned according to point groups Oh, D3d, C4v, C3v and C2v, supported by normal coordinate analyses based on a general valence force field. The good agreement of calculated and observed frequencies confirms the assignments. Due to the stronger trans-influence of Br as compared to Cl, in all asymmetric Cl—Rh—Br axes the Rh—Br bonds are strengthened and the Rh—Cl bonds are weakened, indicated by valence force constants for Rh—Br approximately 14% higher, for Rh—Cl 10% lower, as compared with the values calculated for symmetric Br—Rh—Br and Cl—Rh—Cl axes, respectively.

(Me3Sn)3PO3S has been prepared from the reaction of Me3SnCl with Na3PO3S • 12 H2O under cooling in aqueous medium. Its IR and Raman spectra are found to be consistent with a polymeric structure with tetra- and penta-coordinated tin atoms. The 31P NMR and mass spectra of (Me3Sn)3PO3S are reported and discussed.

Abstract In the reaction of K2[OsX3 Y3] with boiling water/acetylacetone (1:1) the six mixed complexes cis-and trans-[OsX2 (acac)2] (X ≠ Y = Cl, Br, I) are formed, which have been purified by column chromatography with toluene on silica gel. The IR and Raman spectra (10K) show the intraligand vibrations of the acac groups with nearly constant frequencies and the stretching vibrations of OsO in the range 460-696, of OsCl at 315-345, of OsBr at 210-225, and of Osl at 160-175 cm-1 . A normal coordinate analysis based on a modified valence force field was performed for trans-[OsClBr(acac)2] and the vibrational modes have been assigned. With a set of 32 force constants, taking into account the intraligand vibrations, a good agreement between observed and calculated frequencies has been achieved. The valence force constants are fd (OsCl•) = 1.75, fd(OsBr′) = 1.63 and fd (OsO) = 3.27 mdyn/Å.
