AbstractA new multicage compound [(Me)2EtNH][Mn(N3)3] (Me = methyl, Et = ethyl) with a perovskite-related structure has been synthesized. The manganese(II) cations are bridged by end-to-end (EE) azide anions to form three-dimensional cages with the N,N-dimethylethylammonium cations residing in the cavities of the [Mn(N3)3]nn− cages. The compound has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, second-harmonic generation, and magnetic measurements. The second-harmonic generation results support its noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show antiferromagnetic interactions among the MnII ions.

A numerical study of the effect of betatron oscillations on the second harmonic generation in free-electron lasers (FELs) is presented. Analytical expressions for the effective coupling strength factors are derived that clearly distinguish all contributions in subharmonics and each polarization of the radiation. A three-dimensional time-dependent numerical FEL code that takes into account the main FEL effects and the individual contribution of each electron to the second harmonic generation is presented. Also, the X- and Y-polarizations of the second harmonic are analyzed. The second harmonic was detected in experiments at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) Low Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) and Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in the soft X-ray regime. The approach presented in the article can be useful for a comprehensive study and diagnostics of XFELs. In the paper, the LCLS and Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) experiments are modeled. The simulation results are in a good agreement with the experimental data.

Transparent nano-crystallized glass fibers with 300μm diameter were successfully fabricated in tellurite (TeO2) based glass systems. Structure of crystallized glass fibers and orientation of nano-size crystals were quantitatively investigated by microscopic Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Second harmonic generation was measured in the nano-crystallized optical fibers.

Single crystals of the relatively new nonlinear optical material L-asparagine monohydrate have been successfully grown by the slow evaporation solution growth technique at room temperature in aqueous solution. The crystal system of the title material has been confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. The crystalline perfection of the as-grown and annealed crystals has been evaluated by high-resolution X-ray diffraction. The as-grown single crystals (particularly when their size is large) were found to contain internal structural grain boundaries, and the crystalline perfection of these crystals was found to be improved substantially by annealing at low temperatures. The crystalline perfection and the measured physical properties were found to be correlated such that the second harmonic generation efficiency, optical transparency, fluorescence and dielectric properties are enhanced as the crystal quality improves.
